  1. i was always a crusader.when in elemetary school vince bruni was my gym teacher. he knew my parents very well. in 1964 he saw me start hanging around with some older kids in a gang. so he intervened. he started to take me to crusader rehearsals. i enjoyed it. it kept me off the streets. that year in september there was a show in syracuse and he took me. that was the show that put cru on the map. they beat the cabs. now i was hooked. i spent 1965 going to rehearsals and a few local shows. tournament of drums and some others.i did the same in 1966. then the A.L. NATS was in washington. and bob ashto took me to it. it was exciting. prelims one day finals the next. i really wanted to be in cru. we all remember the fiasco on the field. in october of that year bruni said you look old enough now ans said i could join. so 1967 was my rookie year and i never looked back. i wouldn't trade it for anything. and it kept me out of jail.

  2. No matter how many times I've listented to this, I get goose bumps each time. I can't imagine ever getting tired of this one. As with Bloo's "Creep", this one is very special. Listen, listen again, repeat... enjoy!

  3. Is that thing seriously on the front sideline? I know shows are designed for the pressbox but if I am a fan wanting to see The Cadets and I am sitting low between the 35s, am I supposed to just imagine what the hell is going on behind big and tall curtain #1? Doesn't seem like the audience was thought about there. Was an issue I had live in San Antonio last year, my view was seriously obstructed at multiple times in the show from those towers.......hmm. We will see I guess.

  4. Yup... in your Cowboy vernacular, did the Phantom Uniform Committee let the horse do the thinkin' ?

  5. Phantom's new uniforms look like they were designed by committee.

  6. I'm not really a fan of any of the new uniforms I've seen, including Regiment's. I guess these designers think that eclectic is where it's at with the judges right now? I would like the two tone look better if the left and right sleeves and gauntlets had the same shape and side. And I pretty much hate the dangly capes. I said it last year and I guess it bears repeating again: is Theo Huxtable now designing for DCI corps? (I prefer a keep-it-simple approach, with clean lines.)

  7. I'm sorry. I just don't understand the concept of "dangly" addons. I'm over 50 now. I grew up knowing about the 60's and beads and what-not, but to this day I don't get "dangly."

  9. The thing about Cesario is that when it comes to Phantom, he's got a sense of what goes together. Say "Swan Lake" and everyone thinks ballet yet he keeps the ladies shoulders bare but makes sure to have a ballet influence. That guy has one of the best jobs in this activity. He's everywhere, he knows everyone, he's working for the majority of the units and every single thing he says is positive.

  10. "Lets Hear it From Me": "What happens in the Emerald City, STAYS in the "Emerald City".".... Of the two co-ed "City" corps I was privledged to march with (St Anns & the Royal Lancers 1958-1966) the CRL was the more successfull. We managed to beat all of our cross-city rivals, (At least onece) and accepted an invite to the CYO Nationals in 1966. St Anns had a good run, mainly as a "Circuit" corps with some incredible Sturtze trained drummers that did well in "Individuals". Some great RL memories include the "Mid Show" exhibition at the 1963 Dream Contest (Our FIRST "Big Time" field performance bookended by St Kevins & the Skyliners), and making the Finals of the 1963 World Open, our very first time in competition, (The corps was originally "out" but a mistake was found on the sheets that put us in 10 place). Our best season was 1965 with the "Drietzer Sound", After that year our older members started to slip away to the Hurricanes or the USAF Academy corps. I consider myself MOST FORTUNATE to have been taught by two of THE VERY BEST writer.arrangers in the activity, the late Joe Genero and Hy Drietzer. Actually:, as a GIRL I had little chance to continue in "Senior" drum corps after the RL shuttterd their doors. My nursing career in the military was right around the corner, and I said "Goodbye" to the activity. My days in St Anns and the Royal Lancers were among the very best in my life. The very brief Park City Pride membership renewed some long lost friendships. Elphaba WWW

  11. I would totally agree if he wouldn't have said that he hopes they fall out, which is pretty classless and insulting to the MMs of Madison. If they fall, let it be because you doubt the show design or something you can try to back up, not because you have some ill will towards Madison. You can dislike the shows and their design choices, but hoping they fall.........I dunno. Maybe that's just me. I wish all the corps the best, and whoever does the best with what they have should make it in. Period.

  18. .... is this really Phantom? the posture in the arc makes me think this is a HS band... regardless, the new Phantom uniforms are very questionable, IMO.

  19. Obviously the fabric over the scaffolding is temporary. It's not perfectly fitted or squared to the frame yet so it will probably change.

  22. You hit the swan on the head with busy...the fringe/feathers (theme), two different gauntlets, the "right sleeve"...yowza! On the positive side, the black pants will be a big help ... The guard costume looks rehashed (again) this time from Faust... I'm sure there's more to it than what they are showing, perhaps a cape, a head piece, and who knows there may be more than one color (unless someone has seen them all dressed the same)... I was hoping for a classic all white look again... had even thought of 1/2 in white and 1/2 in black...with red accents...

  26. ...are the wrist guards two different sizes?
    1 point
  27. Hmmm... indeed. Cesario pulled out his stock '90's half-and-half black/white design (Dutch Boy, Cascades and others), and then added the extra sleeve and shoulder stuff on one side that they had last year. Plus extra ribbons and dangles! "That's a lotta look." Not sure I'm a fan. The guard costume is lovely, however. Wondering if those feathers are digitally printed.

  37. I'm coming to the conclusion that I don't see what's so horrible about DCP compared to other forms of social media. I'm not sure why DCI or it's directors would have a negative view of it, as long as they can sift through the obvious junk posts. On the other hand, I can see that a director wouldn't want their members to post here. They don't control the environment, and it could end up being a public relations nightmare if the wrong things were said by the wrong people. I could see them feeling that this place is a waste of time to post things or have a dialogue, but that's true of any News group or forum where they don't control the environment. It's also true of ANY organization. Go to MSN and read some of the comments there on an average article on any topic. You're going to get comments all over the place. DCP is much better than those places.

  38. My guess, the same Corps staff telling their charges not to read ( or post ) on DCP, are probably using a flashlight late at nite under their bed covers with their computers to read whats posted on DCP. ( haha! ) Good grief, telling people what to do on their own free time is downright totalitarian and control freakish in nature, and runs entirely counter to fostering and developing free thinking, strong, young adults imo. People here are mostly tame, civil, or at worse, harmless... especially compared to what 18-22 year olders in other " competitive sports " hear in their competitive endeavors from other fans, other coaches, other players, etc.

  39. This activity is full of tough competition. This year in particular there are a number of corps that have the potential to do better than they have in the past. If they do, they will push other corps down. If it could all be perfect, everyone would get to perform at finals. With that in mind, I've been on this board for over 10 years now and I have seen a lot of lame comments, but the one above regarding the Scouts is one of the lamest. "I hope they don't even make finals" goes against all the hard work that these young people put into their summer and it's not because you mentioned the Scouts that I'm saying this - to wish for any corps to not do well is lame.

  42. i'd give a perfect score...if no one was to follow them. toughest show i ever judged, 27 bands in a pretty ###### rain at Allentown, I witnessed a HS line perform so amazingly i considered it. I really did. But, as I walked back to the tent where we tried to scrawl numbers and keep the sheets dry, the caption head walked up beside me and said "remember, there's 3 to go yet. So I made sure their number was high, but I had wiggle room. I once on the flip side walked on the field as an instructor not knowing my only two options before we played a note was 1st or 4th. pretty frustrating feeling when I saw the recap later

  44. 2 interesting things about the 'Surfer Girl' - When the show was over one of the announcers (music professor from somewhere) said 'Well, that is the most complicated thing we have seen all night' as the camera was on her as she left the field. Cesario cracked up....; Rondo got it back on topic - According to the VK DM, who used to post here (I believe) and on RAMD, said she was overage - like 23 or 24

  46. First, if synths were still illegal, we wouldn't be asking each other if that was a "real" sound. :-) Second, a funny story. A couple of years ago, we were giving our sixth graders the opportunity to try out several instruments as they were picking what they would play in band the next year. One girl was deadset on playing the tuba, and when they sat her in front of the instrument, the most beautiful, lyric sound came out. For awhile, we thought she was a natural--the best tuba sound we'd heard in that middle school for many years--and from a complete beginner playing her first note. Then, we figured it out--she was singing through the horn. She's now a drummer. :-)

  47. GR loved to write for the French horn and mellophone. Maybe it was because he was a French horn player himself. Listen to SCV’s 74 opener. We were also blessed to have some great players in those sections. Phil Olds, Mel Canales, Jim Ott, Stanley Knaub, Scott Pierson, Dan Smith, Mike Hamlin, Steve Fisher and Eric Unruh were some of the guys I marched with, all great players.

  48. 83 or 84 Freelancers. We just left a show in Nebraska or thereabouts. A red convertible with six people drove circles around the bus as we traveled down the freeway. They were making gestures, throwing empty beer cans at the bus, etc. On what became their last pass behind the bus, Steve the contra pulled the handle and drained the waste tank. 84 Troopers DM shot other DMs with his BB gun during retreat. 83 Freelancers: one of the sops used his personal bugle at prelims, one of the tune-any-note variety. As we're marching off the field, a staff person comes over the the player and says "faint into my arms" and they go away. About a minute later a judge calls over the entire soprano line and circles us up, more like a horse shoe shape. He starts counting us-1,2,3.. While his back is turned, the first sop counted jumps to the other side, and he judge continues... 18,19,20. Then he proceeded to inspect all the horns.
