  1. Believe me... at some shows I worked, the PA system was so bad that I could have done the entire show in German and no one would have noticed!!!

  4. I think Cadets everything is maturing. Regardless of placement I love the team they have right now and I'm super excited to see what they put out with some actual time to develop their product. They really made some lemonade with lemons that could have been very bitter otherwise.

  5. Thank you for the compliment. It took a while to pick out the head to head shows and especially figuring out the average weekly rankings. So, I want to make sure I am understanding you correctly. Starting on 7/16 they were ranked by averaging all scores nation wide as 7th, seven days later still 7th, seven days later 6th, seven days later back to 7th, seven days later 5th, (never besting any of the aforementioned corps head to head), and six not seven but six days later a huge leap in both score and rank to 1st, (only then beating them all in one swoop head to head), and again 1st the next day. So.... A) You do not see that as out of nowhere? and B) You truely think they made that large, huge, of improvement in six days when they were not able to do that at all in any of the previous five weeks?

  6. So I’m wasting away a Saturday night eating a good steak and watching old finals videos and what pops up next...1989. What a great year, partly because it’s the year that got me hooked on drum corps, partly because it was just plain old good. I forget what a g bugle line sounds like but that phantom soprano hit at the end of New World Symphony...my goodness. Chills trying to remind myself what hearing that live sounded like. Man I miss Star, forgot how much fun Velvet Knights were and what awe Phantom of the Opera (take 2) was. It is strange actually hearing Blue Devils presented in a place less than 2nd and Rondo was a “young man” lol. Great memories! now don’t get me wrong I love drum corps in its forms today but I can’t help but wonder how would the shows (and I get it, it’s almost apples and oranges) of that era score today? Thoughts?

  20. Are there any threads that are still on topic? This is the 3rd one I've looked at today, and it's really not. I get it. It's the offseason. Anyway, if I have to watch another video of somebody playing a theremin or some overly theatrical kid with crazy eyes playing whole notes on a marimba, i'm going to....keep watching. What else can I do?

  23. Thanks for posting the scores. It was fun to relive. There are, however, some problems with your analysis. 7/30. You are incorrectly assuming Scouts were 6th as of that date. Regiment defeated Star of Indiana two weeks earlier by 1.0 at DCM DeKalb. On 7/30, Star won DCI Canada (over Garfield and Cavies), and Madison beat Regiment at Whitewater. While it is possible, if all the top corps were together on 7/30 that the Scouts could have placed 6th, It's also just as possible that the Scouts could have placed as high as 3rd. We'll never know, because they weren't all together and you cannot compare scores from different shows. 8/6. Your 8/6 assumption that the Scouts were ranked 7th is potentially false. Up until that point, SCV had only lost to BD. It's doubtful four other corps would fall in the 1.8 gap between SCV and BD. But, it's possible. 8/13. This is where I think your assessment is really wrong. 0.4 separated SCV and Madison. Again, SCV had only lost to BD up until that point. Madison was without a shred of a doubt in 3rd place at that moment. I had a couple friends who marched SCV in '88 and '89, and in '89 one of them told me Gail Royer, after their show on 8/13, told them Madison was for real and would contend for the championship in Kansas City (whether he said something to that effect or not, I cannot verify, obviously). That's just what I was told. That same friend also said he thought they (SCV) were going to finish 4th at finals, behind BD, Madison and Garfield, so he said he surprised they finished 2nd. I'm not, their show was fantastic. And BD was no where to be found for Madison and SCV after 7/30. Therefore, we have no way of knowing whether BD would have come into finals undefeated if they had faced SCV and Madison along the way. If I had to guess, I would guess they probably would have remained unbeaten until at least 8/13. It could, were they there, have all changed that night, or SCV may have beaten them earlier. But, we will never know. I think DCM was a complete #### show that year. I was there. There is no way in hell Madison should have placed 4th. Even Drum Corps World said they should have won DCM in their write up about the show. I dont't know if I agree with that, but they should have been right up there with Regiment and Star, if not ahead of Star, that night. If you take the DCM debacle out of the equation there was never a moment in '88 where the Scouts weren't a threat to finish in the top 3. Not once. There was a point where they weren't a threat to finish top 2, but 3rd was a possibility from the get go. But, what was shocking, for those of us that witnessed the transition over the past couple weeks of the season was how a corps fighting for 3rd or 4th place transitioned into a champion. It was unbelievable That's what I was talking about when I said "raging inferno." I didn't say they came back from Europe in that state. I said the last few weeks of the season. Or last couple, in fact. You could just feel, in watching them, that something remarkable was about to happen. Their finals performance in '88 still ranks as the greatest I have ever seen in terms of pure energy. I went to finals that year hoping SCV would win (as I did in 85, and 86, and 87, and 89 and every year thereafter). On finals night, I wasn't left with a single doubt Madison would win, and that's the way I wanted it in the end.

  26. This afternoon, Arsenal BoD has notified its 2019 members that DCI has reversed its position and has accepted Arsenal for participation in the San Antonio Regional. The communication from Arsenal speaks of them as a drum and bugle corps but does not specify whether they will appear as a competitor or exhibitor, whether they will be included in the Open Class or in SoundSport aspects of the Alamodome show. There is not a specific mention of the disruption of the "assessment" review by DCI to welcome the corps to touring although the Arsenal administration admits that changes have been made to the corps' structure while maintaining the aims of their original founder who resigned in the communication uproar in their outreach to Oregon Crusaders mms. The actual notice to Arsenal mms can be found on Arsenal's fb page. As of this hour and posting, DCI website's show information has yet to mention Arsenal as now appearing at San Antonio but that section of the DCI website has been consistently erratic and quite slow in making adjustments for many shows and corps. Corps news and announcements have ceased to be a usual Friday morning 11 am Eastern time regular on the DCI site as well for this off-season.

  29. Not a member but we had a bus driver named George Van Pelt. We called him George Fan Belt. We had another bus driver who we had given a not politically correct name. Let’s just say she broke the bus step. Jim said in Kilties junior there was a bus driver whose actual name was Ben Dover. He backed over a car, hit a ballard, got a speeding ticket.....

  32. BD was undefeated coming into Championships that '88 season. But that assessment of why they lost, (ie, "performance order " ), would be unfair to the'88 Madison Scouts Corps, imo. Madison lost to a few Corps early in that '88 season. Phantom Regiment, Star of Indiana, Cavaliers, and to the Blue Devils ( BD by as much as 4-5 points in July). But Madison went to Europe mid season, was away from competition with BD and the others as a result. The Madison Corps reportedly bonded very well on their trip to Europe, and the Corps improved... a lot. They came to Kansas City DCI Championships that season and beat not only the Blue Devils, but everyone else.. in both Prelims and Finals. They were phenomenal at that "88 Championships, ( watch the video on youtube ) and it would be a disservice to Madison's improvement and achievement from early season to Championships to attribute their '88 Title win to " performance order", that I would concede and agree with you, was a bit unusual and quirky that season.

  33. And I think that pretty much nails it. I fall in that same age range with my formative marching years between 87 and 90. Those shows were amazing (especially 1989) but Stu is correct. They would score abysmally low now if nothing else probably just on GE. I've always said (and feel free to disagree,) that the music is just as hard as it ever was across the brass and percussion books. The big change to me has been in drill design and guard complexity and staging. These young people now are doing things movement wise that we just would have never imagined in those times. Their level of musical talent is matched only by their visual talent at this point and I, for one, am amazed.

  35. Good point Stu. My “apples and oranges” was more thinking about marching and music styles. I didn’t even think about the judging systems being different but I guess there really is no comparison. I’m just thankful there is video to enjoy them all.

  36. Using the adjudicating criteria of today, the '89 corps would score low. Using the adjudicating criteria of '89 the corps of today would score low. So, other than that what else would you like to know.

  38. On January 8, 2019, in News The Boston Crusaders rang in the new year with our first production camp; returning brass and percussion members reported to Lakewood Ranch HS, along with all three 2019 drum majors. An exciting weekend of drum corps unfolded, culminating with a Sunday afternoon ensemble performance of the 2019 show music. Both the brass and percussion received music the week prior to the camp and did excellent work preparing the challenging material. At the end of the Friday night block, Executive Director Chris Holland gave a 45 minute organizational overview which included the zero tolerance policies and key areas of safety and conduct. The organization is committed to on field and off field excellence, thus the highest of standards apply to members, staff, and adults at all times. Saturday was intensive drum corps from start to finish. The visual team obtained baseline fitness metrics on all brass members, worked on marching techniques, and spent considerable time on movement and choreography. We welcomed back Brady Sanders, and are excited to have added Lin Daffron and Max Applegate to the visual and movement staff. Meanwhile, Dr. Vivien Tucker began individual health assessments on members. Thanks to Assistant Corps Director and Lakewood Ranch Band Director, Ron Lambert, ample dedicated volunteers were onsite to ensure the weekend ran smooth and efficient. We were also very grateful to have Gina Hagopian present to coordinate and assemble a fantastic kitchen crew. Operations and administrative team members – Jack Kaplan, Mike Pfeil, MaryMason McWhorter – also used the weekend to plan Texas production camp logistics and move-in/tour travel and housing projects. Our design team, caption managers, drum majors, assistant corps director, and executive director will participate in the DCI annual meetings this week in Indianapolis from January 10 – 13, where the focus will be on safety, health, & wellness. Over 350 people from the drum corps community will be present over the four days, and we are looking forward to representing BAC. Our next production camps are February 8-10 for brass and percussion and March 15-17 for brass only at The Colony High School in Dallas, TX. We will return to Lakewood Ranch for our April 26-28 production camp and Family & Friends performance. https://bostoncrusaders.org/2019/01/january-production-camp-recap-2/
