  1. Not even close. The latest clue is looking forward. That I like. I want to see more forward progress. Reminiscing is nice but that is what alumni corps are for. Keep pushing the envelope BD.

  2. Hey, that's me, the soprano on the right in front at 2:43.

  3. I usually don't do this but...... I feel like Santa Clara Vanguard either wins or comes very close.

  4. Spirit of Atlanta in 1979 and 1980. I'll never forget when Spirit was asked to march halftime for Georgia Tech at the Tech-Alabama game ( because Tech students weren't even back in school yet). Alabama brought their "Million Dollar Band" with what looked like a million members. And...just a couple of weeks off of Finals, Spirit walked out onto the field behind them with 128 and just blew the paint off the pressbox. Good times.

  7. I predict that either Mandarins or BDB make top 12. (I am hearing good stuff about Mandarins)

  8. It's probably not one that is talked about much...but for me...it was 1992 Crossmen at Allentown...mid-show...my GAWD it was awesome!!!!

  9. From a legendary standpoint, but corps I did not see live, I've always heard of Spirit of Atlanta in 1980, Madison Scouts in 1975 and 1978. From a LIVE standpoint I'd say the following stick with me: Madison Scouts 1980, 1988, 1995, 1997, 1999 Blue Devils 1984 Star of Indiana 1991 & 1992 Phantom Regiment 1996 The Cadets 2007 Carolina Crown 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016 I don't think I could actually rank the above. We tend to remember the most recent shows and it's difficult to compare the old and new. In terms of encore performances, one really stands out to me. Phantom Regiment 1991 at the University of Pennsylvania stadium in Philadelphia. Loudest encore concert I ever heard. Wow! My ears were stinging after that one.

  10. Knowing Chandler he has some sort of theme for this but I certainly can't figure it out. As far as I can tell though it really seems to be a heavy on the music. The guy really is a visionary and I am sure this particular year they have planned for a while. I am thinking today is the day judging for the latest "clue". I didn't see the eggs or anything. Thanks for pointing that out.

  12. It seems that this year's episode of the Cadets offseason is without controversy. Nice to see

  13. From what I can tell it's not really a themed show. Just music. (really good music)

  14. Soooooo.... 8 months later. Ryan is marching Euphonium with the Spirit of Atlanta this summer. It appeared he had tabled the thought of marching 2017, but when a spot opened up at Spirit (where both his father and I marched in the 80's) last weekend, he wanted an opportunity to audition for the spot. And now it's happening. I marched with the current Director and Asst. Director and they want to do all they can to welcome my son, even with the special concerns. A great medical staff has me feeling like this can work. Does it mean I'm not going to worry? I'm a Mom. I don't think it's possible! My wish is to come back on here in mid-August and report that it was an awesome summer for him with little incident! btw, I'm not sure I had read the 2009 posts on this thread until today.... THANKS to all you who shared your experiences!!

  15. The change or "evolution" of the activity is occurring at a much faster rate than it was from the '70s to '80s, '80s to '90s, '90s to '00s. Part of this rapid change about is the significant growth and popularity of BOA and WGI. It used to be DCI and the drum corps activity that had the influence in the marching performing arts; BOA and WGI looked to the drum corps activity for inspiration. Now, it's the other way around. Most of the movers and shakers in the in the drum corps activity are coming from BOA and WGI programs as a lot of the classic big names are retiring, passing the torch to their younger counterparts, or (sadly) passing on. The instrumentation allowed in the activity is becoming more closely related to marching bands and the look and design of the corps and their shows are heavily influenced by WGI. The young men and women in the ranks love and embrace what's going on and they are the ones that are keeping the corps alive. There are some things I'm not crazy about (sousaphones? really?); but, if the members dig the changes and keeps them coming back, so be it. This is their time and era.

  18. Oooooh! Tough question! They first have to actually beat BDB in Indy to do that. I don't want to single anyone out mentally. I hate that part of the season. idk but I see BDB taking another long run in percussion open class again. If everyone stays the same spot then it's just a stronger pool which is good for us. I was blown away by every single corps I saw last year!

  19. Yep...and then the final moments of "Let It Be Me" were off the decibel-chart too. Still hate that one baritone got a little over-aggressive in those final phrase...you can hear him/her on the tapes to this day. Might have cost them a medal. Finished 4th to Bridgemen by a hair after beating them in Prelims.

  20. Spirit, "Georgia" opener, 1980. Ears were bleeding. So many others from which to choose, from back in the day and from today's era. For starters, Crown's horn line has not been shy about parting people's hair at various times. LOL

  21. Well I predict at least one of last year's top 3 drops out of it and SCV certainly poised to jump back up into it.

  22. That's pretty much a given at this point

  23. BD doesn't typically "play other corps music" as much as other corps, but they have played tunes that other corps have done. At the same time, they play new stuff on the field, or they arrange in such a way that one wouldn't immediate recognize the tune. If the rumors are true, they could be playing something that another corps has played, but it's been a very long time. I am sure that this year's BD is going to be super special.

  24. By far the loudest I have ever heard was 89 Santa Clara in the closer when the hornline turns around in the diagonal company front... 28 years later I can still feel the ringing in my ears! God I am old.

  25. I remember a rainout show in 92 where we did a standstill performance in a gym and pieces of ceiling insulation started dropping down during 1812.

  26. I am SOOOO unbelieveably excited for BD this season. SCV too. The 60/50 relationship is crazy cool and I'm so excited to see them both tear it up. I hope BD continues to push the envelope with difficulty, emotion, and all the other great things that go into making The Blue Devils themselves. I hope they announce soon though, I need to give my hype train some new fuel.

  27. Or they totally transform it (1998 One Hand One Heart) and perhaps mix it with other music. (one of my all time favorite BD shows)!

  28. I'm sticking with Madison 1975. First note of Slaughter on 10th Avenue and final push of Way We Were.

  29. Yeah flammaster. I have a theory and it is this; I feel that the graphics with hatched eggs, birds, butterflies, wings of the aidition posters are just metaphors for the show and the organizations itself, in meaning Of soaring and transitioning into the future, going forward to explore new fresh ideas, on a new path as you say "pushing the envelope" The Blue Devils way. So yeah I agree and thats what I definitely want to see from them, it suits them. Blue devils expresses new ideas very well and they take to strange content and untrodden grounds bravely and so perfectly in a captivating and sophisticated kinda gansta way. They are Magnificent! So thats what I think of the meanings of those few poster graphics. BD moving and pushing forward.

  31. Judging by there last update video which they released, looks like 20 trumpets, 20 baritones, 12 mellophones, 12 tubas, 7 snares, 4 tenors, 5 basses, 4 cymbals. Not sure about front ensemble. 24 guard. This seems to be the number they are designing the drill around according to the shot of someone holding a copy of the drill grid. I paused it and counted. Whether they actually have these numbers, I don't know. I sure hope so. It would be significant growth from last year. As far as turning heads, I think they did that last year.

  36. I do know how many MM's we are fielding, however all I can say for certain is that we have expanded our original hornline numbers! Not sure if the number is known publicly so I'll hold off on saying it. Look forward to some exciting announcements in the coming months!

  39. Congratulations. Well, getting corps to share information this season thus far has been like pulling teeth...................usually slow and painful.with their jaws set and teeth grit. New terms for '17 to be in the know include "Cone of Silence," "Shako of Silence," that Mass is not a measure of weight, and if you need a loan to pay graduate school costs see Brasso and his corps brothers in Boston. Like the tooth fairy, BAC seems to have found a lot of money under its pillows. You've been very accomplished in recent years in extractions for this or that show and thread, and dodging the overbites occasionally here on DCP. You'll be just what the doctors ordered to replace many a denture when mouths drop upon seeing that costumes have replaced traditional uniforms for legacy units like Madison, Garfield, and others yet to be seen. Flossing daily might not be enough to safeguard from cavities caused by discarded customs while triple tonguing and amazing music will continue to astound. All of us seem to be grinding our teeth waiting for ST to begin; we're salivating for this 2017 season. Just don't tell us we can't enjoy the candy and sweet treats we anticipate a good number of corps will be sharing with us very, very soon. Now do we get a free toothbrush? I could have made a reference to Crowns but thought this was enough filling to ease you back in.

  40. Wow, that's a late start. Or maybe UTHSCSA just hated us-- we always had to start in the first week of July, and only had June off every year. The first week was filled with a ton of orientation stuff, then they proceeded to kick our ##### in earnest. (You'll do awesome, BTW!)

  47. The Illinois state contest was never published in the major drum corps periodicals of the day. I have the Cavaliers yearbook from '72, and they don't have the recaps. I no longer have the Bluegrass Nationals recaps. The VFW I do have.
