  1. Last season C1 and C2 held a combined contest of DCA and DCI corps at soccer stadium in Chester, PA. Most loved the sight lines and seating of the stadium. This season no DCA show there in Chester, although C1 will return there for a midweek DCI show replacing the Westchester, PA show on 7/30. Probably C2 in exhibit. C1 is also not doing the West Chester, Ohio DCI show on 6/22 which is at Fairfield H.S. Thank God, there's no Eastchester (in Westchester Cty, NY) to confuse it further. Cue Chester Overture played by several corps over the years.

  2. Fran ... Ray doesn't drink anymore ... to balance things out, I don't drink any less ... try to join me at Sky's I&E on March 21st and I'll introduce you to a whole new realm of announcing ... I'll even let you man the Buy Bucky a Beer Memorial Booth ... it will provide you the opportunity to see the world as Bucky did ... but ... you'll most likely need a ride home ... :-)

  4. OK, JetBlue was one of the first to fly to Havana over 3 years ago, although to date, only charter flights. When I got out of the USAF, because of my Top Secret Clearance and the fact that I had been flying in Spy Planes, the State Department put a lifetime ban on travel to Communist Countries, not including Cambridge Massachusetts. I'm guessing that that went away years ago, but I really don't know. In general I'm still ###### off at Communists for trying to shoot me down all the time. I get that they're probably still ###### off at me for helping coordinate bombing missions and air strikes, but as my mom always said, "if they can't take a joke, f*ck 'em"

  5. By far my favorite drill that Phantom has marched. Not the best executed but then again who has ever marched a Rosander drill super clean?

  6. OK, back from sunny Puerto Rico, red like a balloon, and figured I'd get caught up on everything I missed on "Guess Who"... OK, I'm caught up now. Anyone going to the Renegades Chinese New Years Parade? I'm thinking about it as I fly free and I want to catch one of my daughter's Blue Devils Winter Guard shows this year before she gives up the activity (as if she ever will). OK, that's all for me - shoveling snow tomorrow for the first time in my 60s - that might not be true - I was 60 when I moved to Texas in April 2012 so I probably shoveled before I moved, but my memory allows me to make unsupported statements all the time. One of those "The older I get, the better I was" sort of deals.

  7. This show has a special place in my heart. I'm Native and we are the direct ancestors of the Anasazi. That same year in March my father passed away just three months after I got married. He was my biggest fan and always came to as many shows as he could when I marched back in the day. Watching and listening to the show that Finals night in the stands was surreal, almost like my father was there in the stadium. I cried after that performance and all the memories I had with my father during my marching career from the fundraisers, to performances, to the sacrifices he made to ensure I could march, were just so clear and real again. It wasn't the cleanest show that night, but it was the show I remember and cherish most from that season. Thank you PR and to the OP, I'm glad you found this great show!

  9. Don't know how I missed it in 2010, but I'm certainly making up for lost time. It kind of went like this: Saturday: bored, search for shows on the site that must not be named. Found a clip of the ending to Into the Light. Watched about five times in a row. Sunday night: got the audio and video on the Fan Network, put on my iPod Monday: Lose track of how many times I listened to it at work. I'm still not sold on the middle part of the show--some ideas that just didn't quite coalesce (but some really sick drill moves). But sweet mother of God, the opening and closing are glorious. THAT'S the Regiment I want to hear! Today: Ordered Kamen's original piece on Amazon.

  10. A- Your point is well made and well understood. It is a major concern whether the show designers and corps administrators want to admit to it or not. It speaks to the very substance of the activity. Are the performers judged and given a score or are the designers judged and given a score? I posed the very points you made in a thread I initiated back in the early Fall on the DCI forum. You may recall it ran for pages and pages, perhaps the thread with the most posts this off season. You may wish to review it. It expands knowledge but raises more questions. I suspect I agree with your sentiments more than usually.

  11. Watch the faces of the corps in the the closeups. Each and every one of them is entirely into doing that show. It's one of those that must have been just a pleasure to age out with.

  12. So ... again ... for my education ... we're playing Elenor Rigby and at some point in the chart, I point to the Synth Player and he/she presses the correct button and the piccolo soprano solo from a recording plays (because we have the proper performance rights) in perfect rythm, pitch, inflection, tone, quality and whatever musical evaluation terms you want to apply - because I may not have a player in line that can pull off that solo? I think I just peeeed ...

  13. I'm happy that Regiment had the opportunity to make their mark the way they did with "Into the Light." Looking at the captions, there were elements that had issues. As a whole, the show was so much greater than the sum of the parts. I like that you used "dreamlike" because I think it fits and I haven't seen that description before to describe the show. This past season, I think Blue Knights were able to capture the audience in a similar fashion. For those who comment about Myron Rosander's drill and being able to clean it...."Into the Light" was probably the most difficult drill Regiment has ever put on the field in their history. Myron is reknowned - what he did for Phantom that season is still being discussed today and I would think for a long time coming. I remember the member comments/posts/videos from that season and I think it's safe to say that whomever marched Phantom 2010 believed in what they were doing.

  14. I'm about an hour and a half west of Charlotte, so this makes it a 6 hour round trip for me instead of a 3 hour trip, the day after I've done about 8 hours in the car to get to Atlanta. I got the survey, and gave them similar feedback. I'm not saying I wouldn't make the drive, but it's much less likely in any sort of even mildly bad weather conditions.

  15. DCI has added a list of prospective corps on their website that will be undergoing evaluation for the 2015 season. http://www.dci.org/corps/list.cfm?class_id=9 Also, it looks like Thunder from Spokane, WA is gearing up to return after being inactive last year. http://www.thunderdrumcorps.org/season/ I'm loving all of the growth the last couple of seasons in Open Class after years of watching one corps after another fold. Hopefully, this trend will continue in the future.

  17. Thanks for the heads-up, speculation though it be at this point. For those of us who hit Rainbeat the night after Atlanta, this may help in planning. For those of us who aren't Carolinans, locations (with the stadium names for instance XYZ Field in downtown Gastonia) might make for easier reading rather than to spend the afternoon fact checking with google. To answer your question, I didn't receive anything to date and I seem to be on all their pre-contest ticket lists and donor (and begging and) begging letters. I knew it was too good to be true. No rain when Rainbeat contest was returned to downtown Charlotte for two years, ha, ha. O well, Carolina Cloud.

  18. Synthesizer/keyboard player. Stands with the others in the pit. Increasingly includes triggering of stored sound clips. Mixer person (if they have one) is off the field. I am not aware (I could be very wrong) of anybody "live" sampling the hornline and applying effects to that in real-time. Sounds logistically and musically "risky" even if it is legal. One might be under the impression that a DCI corps last year was live sampled and the pitch bent -- but my understanding is that it was simply a pre-recorded sample.

  21. The only thing I would add to Scott's post is that people like Scott and others on the board of directors as well as Dave Stollberg, the corps director have worked very hard to change the public perception of CV from the stereotypical "drunken cuss fest" as I have heard it described in the past to one of professionalism and class. Needless to say, their efforts are bearing fruit in the quality of recruits, both young and old, that are being attracted to what CV has to offer. We are even beginning to see potential members coming over from Europe and Asia to audition for the corps. Like I said on the clip, it is a very very exciting time to be associated with Atlanta CV. 22. Mr. Dave Nelson is the 2015 Kilts percussion composer/arranger---Dave started his teaching career in 1999 (after he aged out of the Glassmen) with the Kilts and went on to work with such corps as Blue Stars, Boston Crusaders and has been with the Colts for the last several seasons--presently being the Colts percussion caption supervisor/percussion composer---Dave has a real handle on things, offering appropriate and tasty stuff.

  23. A very high number of our prospective members see CV as a pathway to DCI. It could be their experience level, the financial concerns, or the time constraints while still in school that have led them to us, finding that CV offers a better option for them at this point. By the same token, a very nice number of our 1 and 2 year vets are moving on to very high caliber drum corps in DCI, with the DCA experience helping them kick the door down. This season alone we've had members of last year's corps secure contracts with Cavaliers, Madison, Troopers, Bluecoats and SCV. Others in just the past two seasons have been in Phantom, BD, BK and a few Open Class corps. Our relationship with Spirit is very healthy and mutually respectful and beneficial. Add to the list a dozen or more who have been in both of our corps over the last few seasons. We are also starting to see more and more who leave for DCI, age-out and return home to CV. All in all it's a very good time for drum corps in the South. As for Spirit, I'm not sure that "struggling" is the right word. They had a huge turnout for the Open House and solid talent everywhere. Yes, last season ended up as a disappointment, placement-wise, but we have nothing but good thoughts and things to say for our Atlanta brothers. Many, many in the CV family have ties to Spirit going back a long way. (Full disclosure: Myself included.) We even have a SoA charter member from '77 who is joining our ranks this season - the first time he's ever marched in DCA.

  24. I thought it might be a good idea to start a common thread for show announcements. Tell us what your show is, what your repertoire will be, and a little about the design. I'll keep a running list here on the top as new shows are posted. WHEN POSTING YOUR SHOWS, PLEASE INDICATE WHICH DIVISION YOUR CORPS ARE IN SO THAT I CAN PLACE THEM IN THE APPROPRIATE LIST! Thanks :) --------------- CURRENTLY ANNOUNCED SEASON 23 SHOWS: World Class (Div I): -Alpine Scouts - "The Electric Violin" -The Dewsbury Regulars - "Mallory" -The Royal Crusaders - "Story's of War" -Northern Lights - "A Carmen Fantasy" -Polaris Regiment - "The Wall" Open Class (Div II): -Alpine Cadets - "Light and Gold" -The Texas Zephyrs - "Ballets for Martha" -The Huddersfield Hundred - "Lawrence" -The Blue Raiders - "The Sound of Music" -Harmonic - "Whiteout" -Northern Stars - "Moulin Rouge" -The Marauders - "Nightfall on the Amalfi Coast" Class A (Div III): -Western Wind - "Holst!" -The Mirfield Lockmen - "Christie" -Crusade - "Locomotive" -Northern Cadets - "Atonement" -Xothyme - "Call of Desire"

  25. Some people have been calling for the Troopers to find some kind of change which would make their shows more "judging friendly," yet still retain their identity. Maybe one of these years, they can go a VK route and do "Oedipus Tex" by P.D.Q. Bach.

  26. I would think not. Keep in mind the DCI World class corps recruit at a nationwide level, CV does not. There's also a fair percentage of over-21s in CV as well from my observation of the corps over the past 3-4 years in contests. There are also young people who can afford to march CV but not Spirit. Think more of CV as providing an opportunity for young people to participate in a great corps and have a great experience that they might not otherwise be able to have and afford rather than competing with Spirit for the same kids. Some of them might not make it through Spirit's auditions, either. No, I'm not a shill for CV, though I do think very well of them. Just some food for thought.

  29. If I may... I respectfully suggest a "step at a time" approach here. If the corps is not yet ready to go on the competition field in 2016, from a membership and financial standpoint, don't rush things just to get a corps out there. And if the infrastructure is not yet in place to support a "feeder corps"... put it on the back burner. I am not trying to say "don't do this" or "you can't do this." I wish you all the best, and hope we'll see you guys at DCA championships some year. Like W said earlier, it would be great to have yet another southern all-age corps on the scene!!! Just that I've seen so many organizations with big plans fall by the wayside over the years, because they tried to take too many steps too quickly.

  30. Speaking of "Carmen," there's a ton of music from the opera that has never seen the drum corps field which I'd love to hear, and it would not have to be used in a "Carmen" themed show. Other operas I'd love to see explored are Gounod's "Romeo and Juliet" and Verdi's Il Trovatore." It would be a technical challenge too. Opera is not that easy to pull off on the drum corps field. One last opera pitch: "Au Fond du Temple Saint" from Bizet's "The Pearl Fishers." It's a great tenor and baritone duet with beauty and intensity. I looked on Corpsreps and did not see it listed which surprised me a bit, but if performed it could be one of those memorable moments.

  32. Hi Guys/Gals - I'm new to the forum. My name is Nick Ruiz and I'm working on some music and was hoping that maybe some forum members might like to collaborate on it. Very simply, I'd like to ask if anyone is interested in playing some improvisational solo parts? For example, the first bit would be a few (3 or 4) minutes of soloing in the key of F# minor at a tempo of 110bpm. And also, a few minutes in the key of A major a 110bpm. You can simply record it on an iphone or droid, or if you have a more sophisticated set-up, that's even better. Please save the parts as .wav files. It's not a paying gig, but you'll receive credit for your work. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with me. Email the musical parts or questions to me at nruiz@intertheory.org. Thanks for your help!

  35. I don't live in Florida, but I have family there and spend some time down there when I can. Florida is an interesting beast when it comes to funding a drum corps, hosting a show, and factors with local schools and the state's eco system (climate, economy, businesses, etc.). For starters, it does rain a lot, making it dicey to run a show. You would inevitably have many rain outs. An indoor venue would almost be a necessity. The last time DCI ran Finals there (2003) we dealt with serious rain each day. Semifinals ended at nearly 1am in the morning due to several rain delays, one of which I remember being almost 2 hours long. It's difficult on the marcher. The heat is just incredible with high humidity, especially in the central part of the state. Additionally, local public schools begin in early August so acquiring fields and gyms is not easy for the drum corps. I know that DCI was hoping to attract more of a Florida fan base for the activity, and also more marchers from that state. Most that want to march must leave the state, with the nearest corps being in Georgia or Alabama (not counting the few small corps that still exist in Florida--and they are not active or touring as of now). The eco system down there is very different. Tourism, retirees, and plenty of summer jobs for college students has an impact. I personally didn't mind DCI Finals being there once in a while. It's a big region with tons of hotels and lots of resorts and theme parks. If you paired your trip with a short vacation it was perfect and you didn't let the typically once-per-day rain affect you. But if you were just traveling to see the corps ONLY, then I imagine it wasn't the best experience. If DCI wants future shows in the state, I'd strongly suggest sticking with coastal regions (where it cools down a bit in the evening). I'd also suggest one show per year at Disney where DCI could tie it in with tourists, and the revenues might be good for both DCI and Disney. I'm not talking about using the Citrus Bowl, but some facility in the Disney complex...maybe at the sports complex. Maybe also having a parade in Disney and Epcott. If nothing else, these events would be revenue generating, even if they were not your traditional shows. But yes, running a traditional show in Florida is not easy.

  36. Found this on facebook by Benny PisaniHeat Wave of Florida is a music and marching educational organization based in Inverness, Florida. This is a new, start up organization, which will be open to anyone 12 yrs. old and up. Our goal is to provide a wholesome family organization, which will help the youth of Florida develop the life skills which will prepare them for adulthood, while having fun learning music and the marching arts including color guard skills. We intend to ultimately have 2 groups: a starter group for those without any experience, and an advanced group, which will participate in nationally sanctioned functions. ALL are welcome regardless of experience, race, sex. as long as the individual is willing to learn, he or she will be welcome. If yu have an interest, please contact us on our page here.
