Here’s a quick update on my step-father: He is doing well so far and is being weaned off oxygen. Thank you for all your prayers!

My recollections of 1989: Early season I saw a show in June at Austintown-Fitch H.S. Phantom, Cavaliers, Bluecoats, Crossmen, and others were there. All 4 of the corps mentioned had fantastic shows, but Phantom Regiment looked and sounded like they were in late-July form. They left the audience speechless. It's one of the best early-season performances I've ever seen. Cavaliers were incredibly dirty, and many of my friends thought they would have trouble making top 6. To me, I saw something in their show in terms of design that once cleaned was going to put them in the top 5, maybe higher. Bluecoats were kind of a BD-lite (as someone else mentioned). A smokin' entertaining show with some fantastic soloists. They had a killer percussion feature and their ballad was one of their classic moments. Crossmen and their showmanship, killer percussion and rhythmic grooves was setting the pace for where their would go in coming years. I sadly did not see any shows again until semi-finals and finals in Kansas City. I attended a summer college orchestra festival in L.A. that summer but got back in time to join my friends on a trip to Missouri. DCI Finals: I mostly remember Phantom Regiment being the show I wanted to win. SCV did win and were truly outstanding (even minus the 2 overage kids). I'm sure it was a tough call for judges. But Cavaliers 1989 show totally blew me away. It was a clinic in design and beauty, thematic builds and visual GE that looked to be the future to me. It was stunning to see how far they had come from their early shows. Cavaliers 1989, 90, 91, and 92 are some of my favorite Cavaliers years (not to mention their shows from the early 2000s). The Cadets were so different yet so good. Playing a Robert Smith music book and really bringing Les Mis to the field in a unique yet very accurate way. Percussion section and guard were stunning. Two of the best units on the field that summer. I think they won guard, and not sure about percussion. I have a buddy who saw them more than I did who echoed what a few others have mentioned...that they fiddled with the ending too much. Many felt they could easily have been top 3 with a better ending, but that's how it goes sometimes. I often love BD, but 89 was not my favorite. Great horns and nice music charts, but visually they were behind. Nothing really grabbed me. Star of Indiana on the other hand just totally wowed me and it was obvious what we were in for in the early 90s. That corps could play. The Bluecoats got big applause and an ovation for their high intensity show, as did Madison. Madison's opener that year will kick you in the pants. Slaugher on 10th Avenue wasn't too shabby either. They still had some magnificent players after their 88 championship summer. Nice drill in the opener. Overall, it was a killer good finals, but my big take away was Cavaliers design and beauty and Phantom Regiment's overall masterful show that I thought should have slightly edged SCV.

Story about Kevin Bacon. I went to a summer hockey camp in Toronto in 1969 that the Kevin Bacon also attended. For whatever reason, I always remembered that funny name (he was an obnoxious little boy) and once he became famous and eventually the whole 6 Degrees thing started up, I felt part of his fame.

The art director got a margarita machine for the crew on the last Barney video I worked on. (The show was about to go into hiatus.) Actually, she got two— one with virgin drinks for the kids, and one with the good stuff for the rest of us. It was kept in the back, by the copier. (On the down low.) Even the camera operators were making copies that week!

That reminds me of the this dumb intro video they made for us for day 1 of new hire classes. It has disco laser lights and starts out literally saying (in a gravely, overmiced tone) "The beat drops in 5...4...3...2...1." Literally the worst thing I've ever heard. It offends all 5 of my senses. But then we get to drink champagne at work and I feel better.

Current situation. They’re putting new siding on my residence. The HOA makes these decisions, not me. Last year, they put on a new roof but I was able to leave. I’m trapped and they’re pounding away for eight hours a day. At least, they took lunch. 😳

We’re waiting for test results. But otherwise, she seems fine ... confused, but otherwise OK.

I was kinda joking about J. Birney Crum being the BEST and WORST stadium I ever performed in ... but .... SHE DON'T LIE. Full disclosure, the absolute worst venue ever was New Berlin Wisconsin .... in that cow pasture with no stands and a beer tent off the 20 front sideline behind the snow drift fence.

I remember the first time we performed there, we lined up outside the “stadium” next to police officers who were there to keep the local youth from starting trouble. Fun times!

Really stretching the bandwidth of the old memory but.. First: I can only guess some HS field in Elk Grove Village, IL where VFW state was held many times. Last: Legion Field, Birmingham Best: Warhawk Stadium, Whitewater Worst: Some old field in Iowa somewhere that also evidently served as a dog park. Dog poop on white bucks everywhere. Geesh.

I asked a question to BD fans about three peating. And because its Blue Devils a few took my question out of context and thought it was cocky and non humble etc etc. I never said BD is to going to three peat if you read my post. But it's a good reminder and lesson to myself to beware when bringing up BD accomplishing anything.

Reliable sources have told me BD design team is dropping their 2020 show to do TIGER KING-Constantly Risking Absurdity in 2021.

I dont see it as unpopular, it's your opinion and I respect it. I would say that since 2014, BD has gotten alot of love and has been entertaining. I am basing that on the 2010-2013 years on DCP. Anyone who was around back then remembers how volatile it was for BD and anyone who supported them.

First stadium: Riverside, CA Last Stadium: Foxboro Best Stadium: honestly can’t remember Worst stadium: Pittsfield, MA. It was a muddy, rain soaked baseball field where the stands were a mile away, and off angle. By the time we went on, there were no lines. Between that and being unable to judge where the front of the field was, the 360 spin and crab step wedge was a colossal cluster****. And, because of the kneel in Clair de Lune, our white uniforms ended up covered in mud. Just in time for Finals.

By the "six degrees of Kevin Bacon" rule, it now makes sense how the numbers are spiking.

Sheila E was the hottest thing on MTV BITD...well, in a drummer's opinion anyway. Was the female in SCV's snare line the last couple of years a first for SCV?

I would love to see a John Williams show, and portions from the soundtrack for “Lincoln” would be perfect for Cadets. Sadly, while John Williams is a strong supporter of music programs for the young, he isn’t so fond of people arranging his music, with the exception of some of the folks associated with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (parent of Boston Pops) and I don’t think you can get the rights to most of his music.

here is the most interesting interpretation of the opinion: This could be something DCI, DCA, BOA, WGI units can use to expand what they can use and how much they spend on licensing. It will be interesting if the activity can use this new precedence to "renegotiate" any agreements with Tresona...maybe capitalize on this decision...assuming it holds up upon appeal if Tresona appeals.
