  3. The activity fixes this situation by involving Law Enforcement. Hypothetical: if someone comes into your rehearsal and starts hitting members, call the police, not DCI. If someone steals from your corps, call the police, not DCI. If someone you hired is grooming students to have inappropriate relationships, call the police (and DCI). Adults (especially ones working with youth and running organizations) are MANDATORY reporters. They MUST call law enforcement. It is not enough to say "yeah that one staffer was diddling more than the drums, but we fired 'em, so go us!". Unfortunately if you do not contact law enforcement, you are in some way harboring that behavior. It's a crime. It has to be reported as such.

  4. Worth noting that Lindbergh actually was a raging anti-semite, and even famously accepted a medal from the Nazi military and only returned it after he got intense criticism.

  5. I'm not going to backseat drive another org based on a news article, but the quote about not announcing the dismissal because the staff assured them there was just the one kid involved - that's an eye opener. Mike

  7. This is a sad decision, but one that may be in the best interest of the corps and most especially the young people involved. For corps that did not participate in the 2021 season, restarting will be a challenge. I recently spoke with someone who knows the director of an OC corps that is comparing it to competing for the first time. I might add that while this corps has not had a camp, it is a well established corps that already healthy interest in the 2022 season. For Shadow, add to this rebuilding the trust factor and it’s all the more challenging. My understanding is that Shadow is made up largely of high school sophomores who will be entering their junior year and juniors entering their senior year. Some schools call them ascending juniors and ascending seniors, but we’re still talking 15-17 year olds. Parents are not going to trust an overnight traveling music program. There is also another factor to keep in mind. The article states that Oregon High School checked the credentials of the man who has been fired. Most likely this would involve the people who check the background of new teachers, new aides, new support staff, the coaches for athletics, etc. The erosion of trust will involve more than the school’s summer music program, it will probably impact the entire high school, perhaps the school district.

  13. Yeah, asking for people to be respectful to others, keeping your hands to yourself, recognizing equal rights for everyone is pretty pathetic.

  14. "Cancel culture" is a term adopted by people who refuse to hold those accountable who have done things wrong in the past and continue to do things wrong. We're not perfect at all, but people SHOULD be held accountable for their actions. In terms of Crossmen changing their logo, who cares? It's their prerogative and I'm not bothered by it at all. Cadets have changed their logo many times and while there were people who went nuts about it, we moved on.

  15. Just saw on YT that Eric Carr the guy behind all of the fantastic youtube videos is leaving the Marine Corps and going full time into Youtube -- If there were a way for streamed drum corps shows to have some sort of in studio or on site commentary it would be a hoot if Eric could get that gig - his is so funny and informative - Good luck in whatever you do in music next Eric!

  16. Heh. My dad was a fairly early TV adopter as they got one in the 50s when there were just a few hours of programming on in the evenings. But we were a frugal family growing up and had a B/W TV until the tube went bad and everyone literally looked like the SNL skit The Coneheads. So it was probably what 1978 or so before we got color. The volume slider broke off within a month or so of getting it and dad was ######. We ended up keeping a pencil to put in the slot and move the slider for years and years. It was after I'd graduated High School and gone off to college they finally got a new one, with a remote, because my sister and I were no longer around to use as the remote control to change channels without getting up.

  17. He was not a fan of tv and he practically snapped his cap when my mom signed up for cable for $9.95 a month. He held out until 1971 before buying a color tv and that was only because we begged him for it.

  18. We got our first color TV few days before first showing of “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” (edit 1966). This time of year have flashbacks of parents inviting elderly neighbors over to see it. They were flipping out over the color and I just wanted them to shut up so I could hear the show. 😫 Have DVDs of pre-WWII Looney Tune cartoons. When I saw them as a kid I thought they were in color. Never realized they really were in black and white. 😳

  21. The article is somewhat vague about many things, including reporting the incidents to the police, though it does mention Shadow being contacted by detectives. It could mean one of two things. Shadow did contact the police but the article failed to mention it, or the first young woman contacted the police prior to contacting the former director. I am basing what I say on Massachusetts reporting law which is among the strictest in the country. Reporting grooming or what we call grooming is not always mandated BUT a mandated reporter should never make that decision for him/herself. In our case the recommendation is you call youth services first to get a determination. The intake worker will most likely direct you to the police. This not only backs you up, it creates a paper trail that can be critical if conduct is deemed to be criminal. If DYS says you do not need to call the police or the police say no crime is involved, document it by making sure you have names of who took the complaint as well as dates and times. Since DCI has standards in place, and where Shadow deals with 14-18 year olds and prides itself on the experience it offers, it most likely also has to have policies in place, so it can easily remove a person from employment if grooming is involved as they did. If you have actual proof such as actual texts, there should be no problem. You cannot say why the person is terminated to future employers, but there are ways around it. One is that in the contract it states if a person is terminated, no references other than verification of employment will be given. You can also put in writing that you will not give other employers a reference when the person is terminated. It is best to send it by registered mail. In this day and age, future employers will know the person was terminated either for inappropriate behavior or stealing. Regarding Ms. Compton-Allen, the actions most likely took place during the 2019 season, perhaps earlier, maybe at Winter camps for the 2020 season if there were any prior to the cancellation of the season. I would think that if the potential “red flags” Mr. McGlauchen mentions were missed and is something Ms. Compton-Allen should have noticed, that’s problematic.

  22. And this quote from the 2nd article is telling: "In light of the allegations, McGlauchlen said the Shadow Drum & Bugle Corps will not have a 2022 season. Normally, the corps has a program each summer. McGlauchlen said the corps needs to “evaluate” whether it should move forward at all as an organization."

  23. Yeah, could really care what leaders found in those 9 or so days. Line that stands out to me is Oregon police contacted head of corps. That’s SHOULD be the other war around. Organization handling internally smells like that big college 2 hours from me (spelled PSU).

  31. That is not accurate. What you describe above - holding people accountable - is something that needs to be done with the appropriate specificity. The problem with "cancel culture" is that it often sweeps up a lot of other people in the collateral damage. For instance, three years ago, people were calling for the entire Cadets 2018 season to be cancelled in the process of holding George Hopkins and his BOD enablers accountable. You were singing a different tune then: That is the kind of thing I refer to when using the term "cancel culture". See what I mean?

  32. This is indeed cancel culture. They are cancelling the "cross" how about the "men" in their name. They should not change their logo!!!!!!!!!

  33. My tribe uses the swastika symbol in some of our traditional ceremonial objects. It represents our clan migrations over the years. Many other tribes use this symbol as well. We will not stop using it as that symbol has no meaning other than how we interpret it in a respectful and meaningful way. It's all up to the interpretation of the group. Unfortunately the outside world influences and will cause others to step in and speak/act on something they don't know about. It's our job to educate the few who will listen. That's a tougher choice for leadership when you have members being attacked for it.

  35. Yep, we live in the, "Let's not offend anyone," "Here's a safe place for you," "Let's find an 20 year old RAMD post so we can ruin your life!" time. Life as we knew it has become pathetic! Now look at where drum corps is today and look where we were 45 years ago. We have maybe a 10th of the corps (MAYBE). It's the same top 12 corps every year. The smaller corps fade away. Eventually it will be top 5 corps because all the rest will cease to exist. But maybe this summer corps won't be able to travel because of fuel costs! Another pandemic will hit and DCI and DCA will be virtual.

  37. oh man 92. one of my all time favorite years. saw the east coast gang a few times early, then saw Star added in at Hershey....holy ####. however my favorite memory of that night was Hannum asked if he could squeeze in by us to watch Crossmen, and we said sure...and when the snares hit the flam 5's he swore out loud and laughed. A great memory! then East...Star still looked like they were running away with it, tho Cadets had the usual late season surge brewing..Madison with the better coA and SCV....oh the bottle dance...and Crossmen. the question mark was in! the show seemed to have momentum growing like 91...would they maintain? Bloo and Freelancers seemed to be solidifying their spots in Saturday night. then....a crazy plane ride to Madison for the coldest finals on record...but what a finals! Cavies with the first win, but man Cadets and Star were sooooo good too. bD's percussion seemed ot be holding them back, and madison/Phantom/SCV Crossmen had a little battle going on. Glassmen keeping it interesting on Thursday. some of those non top 12 shows were good! Troop, Colts starting what led to the next season, Magic, and to this day i adore Southwind's Robin Hood. and VK. that and SCV with the bottle dance are 2 of the 4 loudest crowd reactions i have personally been in the stands for. Friday saw more shuffling...Saturday more, plus i am sure sweatshirt sales in the souvie area were strong! and to add to it all...the Camp Randall magic. the battle for the top...i loved em all, didn't care. knowing many people in and teaching Crossmen i marked out for the jump to 6th. disappointed in how some fans chose to revel in Star falling to 3rd as opposed to cheering for Cavies and Cadets. Just a #### solid year up and down the ladder with more than a few shows that have become all time classics
