  2. 1. Wynton Marsalis's All Rise on the field. Just wish some corps would pull more from Blood on the Fields 2. The choice of Agape makes total sense for this show now. 3. I hope they figured out who to pay the 2 cents to for Lousiana Stars' gris gris show. 4. I see it didn't take long at all for the "another show named for booze" to come up. 5. This should be a really good show. Mandarins' design team has figured out a 'formula' of telling stories and creating moods through music and visuals. This is gonna be another good one.

  3. I recall @greg_orangecounty being pretty supportive of SCV during the past two years while being willing to call them out where they fell short. Unfortunately, SCV opened themselves up to this kind of ribbing and tough love when they got far sloppier in their non-profit housekeeping than we expect from a 50+ year old organization that is a marquee name. But I believe there is a lot of affection and goodwill for SCV even from its toughest critics.

  8. I'm not a lawyer, and don't pretend to be one on TV. However, I have consulted with a couple real life lawyers, including one that marched with a Division 1 corps back in the day and has relatively current understanding on the activity. Here's my take based on my conversations with them. With the filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the current iteration of the Cadets is done. Out of business. No path forward. Obviously there are some moral and ethical questions associated with the use of the Cadets name in any capacity moving forward. However, there are legal avenues in which the Cadets name could possibly resurface down the road. Option #1 - The name, trademarks or other assets (including digital assets) are determined to have enough value that the bankruptcy trustee sells them and uses the proceeds to pay creditors. For example, the Cadets domain name is worth $1,800 to $2,500 depending on which appraisal service you use. Their Facebook with over 100K followers has a value as well. All of the above assets could be sold, and the purchaser could use them however they saw fit, including to potentially launch a new "Cadets" program. The United States District Court for the District of New Jersey (which supersedes any civil court opinions/rulings) has already ruled that liability doesn't automatically transfer to the successor unless the plaintiff can “establish that there is continuity in management, shareholders, personnel, physical location, assets, and general business operation between selling and purchasing corporations following the asset acquisition.” So as long as the successor organization starts with an entirely clean slate (new board, new management, new location, etc.), they will likely be in the clear from a liability standpoint. Option #2 - The bankruptcy trustee determines that the above assets aren't worth much and opts to abandon them instead of selling them. A different organization could potentially claim them and use them to start a new Cadets program. Similar to above, as long as they start with a clean slate... they should be in the clear from successor liability. Keep in mind that the primary reason why the current iteration of the Cadets was determined to be liable was a result of a property transfer agreement that was executed between YEA and CA&E. That transfer of assets established successor liability. As long as there isn't that type of blatant continuity moving forward, it would be significantly more challenging for a plaintiff to successfully argue that successor liability should apply.

  10. I’m just merely stating that without all documentation, one doesn’t know the issues the auditor found. They could be minor or mere technicalities. They could be worse. Frankly, with the mess they’ve had the last couple years I could see them having some records issues that auditors would point out and hold out on passing on. A poor audit opinion doesn’t automatically mean something is bad and it doesn’t automatically mean it isn’t bad and filing an extension is far too normal to throw consequence to.

  13. So, Booze titles: Absinthe last year with Blue Stars. Vieux Carre this year with Mandarins. Will this become a show title trend? Whiskey Sour? Long Island Iced Tea? Gin and Tonic? Carolina "Crown Royal"?

  24. I too left Scouting in my mid-teens due to MB, DC plus 3 varsity sports commitments (track, CC & soccer). I left at the rank of Life; in retrospect I probably should have stuck it out to get my Eagle Scout (next rank up) but I helped by good friend (we were the best men at each others’ weddings) get his Eagle project done.

  30. Not a troll, but you expressed your disdain for the organization filing an extension on filing a tax form that is normal and done frequently. I would advise them to file the extension to ensure financials are put in order so that the filing can be accurate. Lack of documentation on hand would make sense in the world of a revolving door of leadership and personnel. It doesn’t mean there’s fraud. It doesn’t mean theres ill will and mischievousness afoot. It’s poor processes. Which can and should be fixed. Hence a qualified opinion on an audit. Furthermore, a qualified opinion isn’t the worst opinion when it comes to an audit. It suggests that there are issues within the financials or the process of preparing the financials. But nothing that cannot be corrected or is further materially misstated to the point that they are entirely unreliable.

  31. If this is the theme, and they play Can You Hear The Music from the Oppenheimer soundtrack, it’s gonna be quite a moment. I have no clue how they could pull that off without strings or woodwinds given the speed but, if anyone can do it, it’s Crown.

  33. Uh, not having all the documentation is kind of the biggest problem... and not a good look for a public non profit with a giant bingo operation. The audit was rated as qualified. More than one tax auditor/DCPer have reviewed the audits and explained their concerns, the most worrisome of which is the lack of documentation for cash on hand. Have you reviewed it? Cause I have. I welcome you to dig through DCP to catch up rather than dismissing everything I'm saying. This, alongside the fact that their previous compliance issues lasted 3 years (and only got better when yours truly and others made a stink about it), reports of historical and contemporary member abuse, a previously documented case of bingo fraud, ongoing lack of transparency, and other issues, gives me pause. But you can cherry pick the current status as non-problematic till the cows come home. Edit to add: Oh goody, my trolls are back.

  34. A show about how to be drunk 24/7? Seems a bit risqué.
    1 point
  35. I understand that. Haven't been a tax accountant but I've worked many years in the NP world. VMAPA has had recent audits with concerning ratings given by their own auditors... who essentially won't back what's in the audits, including their cash on hand... when there's a giant bingo operation involved. The extension in that context begs for further explanation... something I was under the impression the org was going to provide. And concerned stakeholders have the right to expect or demand such. Also, as I said, the other two big corps in CA have completely current listings. VMAPA is the outlier here.

  37. here is a key question.....is the brand worth it? the brand unfortunately despite decades of brilliance on the field, is damaged because of things off of it. i mean no disrespect to the thousands of alumni, but a conversation about the Cadets anymore is 50/50 the shows past or the scandals. And given the alumni base and their infighting that often went public, who really would end up in charge? and would those in charge be accepted? Also..where do you go? Erie? Allentown? Jersey? the funds needed to reboot everything won't come overnight, and then you have to go through the various levels of approval required by DCI to get back into World Class at some point....all while fighting the bad parts of the reputation. yeah Pioneer and Oregon have those tainted legacies, but nowhere the brand...and scandal...recognition the Cadets have.

  39. Sometimes it’s hard to get access to them in a timely manner unless the org itself sends them to you. One typically has to rely on the data collection sites out there to get the latest filings and upload them.

  46. Uh yeah I’m not totally up on what is going on today… THAT’S WHY I ASKED… Referred to what happened in the 70s because shows were lost then due to issues outside of the organizations control. And mainly because the person I responded to was around then and might get the connection. As ironlips said problems scheduling shows today is outside of DCI (aka the organizations) control. IOW “nothing new under the sun” and history repeats. Don’t know why bringing that up is a problem. So how far back am I allowed to go in a discussion 🙄

  47. Thank you to all drum corps Moms for your time, monies, patience, & sacrifice that you've made supporting your kids participating in school band & drum corps programs. I never saw this shout-out video from 2014 so I thought I would share something positive. This is a tough one for me losing my Mom a couple of months ago. I could never repay her (and Dad) for the sacrifices that they made for me. Have a great day!❤️
