  2. You like what you like, which is fine. That has nothing to do with your general comment, which IMO is absolutely UNtrue. I like a wide variety of corps and shows, and placement has zero to do with it. BK has been on my own favorite list for a few years....Crown as well, going back a dozen years or so, with some notable exceptions. I like different corps every year, if they present a show that clicks with me...like this year's Bluecoats. I don't like or dislike a corps just because of their name...or where they place. Scouts have had some very good shows, and some that were not on my favorite list. Ditto Cadets, BD, etc. This is the first year BD has been on my own top list in over a dozen years, for instance.

  6. The Cadets are a perfect example of where the uniform serves as an enhancement to showcase their excellence and a as a neon light when the excellence has yet to be achieved. There was even serious discussions amongst their design staff and the CEO about bringing the stripe back to highlight how well the corps was moving and marching this season. George himself shared that on his Facebook and twitter accounts. That is what he said. That is what George Hopkins said.

  7. so after logging in today to place my finals package order, I went digging through the archives...I realize the challenges with stuff prior to 2002 that have been explained here. But where are the Class A Finalist performances from 02 on up? Given all of the licensing paperwork being done for several years now, those shows would be up there for all to see.

  8. MBI's guard absolutely deserved that trophy too. Hurcs' guard at retreat left a bad taste in a lot of folks mouths...and proves that when you care more about a caption trophy than the success of the overall corps, you have a real problem. I hope they aren't like that anymore...

  9. Synch rights, or "media synchronization" rights, are what allows a producer to combine audio and video on some sort of physical media (DVD, video tape, BlueRay, etc). In DCI's case, they are secured by DCI (or the production company) making the disc for sale, not by the individual corps. Synch rights are different from arranging and performing rights, and also are separate from digital streaming rights.

  11. The point is....what looks ridiculous to one may not be to another, and what we may consider classic may be ridiculous to others. Personally, I love Crown's costuming the past two years, and IMO drum corps in general should continue to push those boundaries to true show-costuming versus old style standard uniforms.

  12. That's been true since 2007. At least in Class A, prior to that caption awards were given based on prelim scores. And then Chops had to go and win High Percussion in 2006 and still miss finals, so the rule got chamged.

  13. Are you talking about This Guy? (Look at my pic). Things have changed a lot in his band since their self imposed suspension in 2008. The biggest disappoinent to me about the OSU band scandal is that their director didnt learn the lesson from Wisconsin. In the report, you could have substituted "Wisconsin" for "Ohio State". That's how depressingly similar the events were.

  17. I too agree that uniforms have an influence, perhaps not always consciously. Having judged, been at many judging association meetings, having instructed, listened to tapes and going to critiques these matters are discussed, sometimes off the record. For instance, a percussion judge will sometimes comment in critique his opinion that the uniform is cumbersome and affecting playing performance. (Cymbal players, battery, bass drums, and pit are all subject to this critique.) Visual judges of all subcaptions will comment, sometimes on the tapes, about clarity of focus, sense of cleanliness, and impact to the box of the forms, flow, and execution/design. Why do you think that some corps have elected to get rid of the side stripe on the pants beyond cost of production (eg. SCV, Cadets, etc.) I have even heard a noted World Class brass judge comment that the particular uniform style constricted the ability of the horn player to breathe his best due to the stress on parts of the body causing constrictions,etc.. Guard judges will discuss more than just whether Blue Devils dropped 3 pieces of equipment at Finals to get a 20. The uniforms add to the impression, to the performance, and to the impact. Otherwise corps would agree to do rainy day shows in tee shirts or tank tops and basketball shorts.

  18. eh - that's because hunting isn't encouraged in CT like it is in PA, nor do they have as many malls as Jersey. kids got to do something with their time....

  19. Guard is blood sport in Connecticut. I'm shocked they didn't storm the judges in 2011, even if the scoring was 100% right, and it was.

  24. If I were a youngster today...now 40 years too late...I would LOVE to march Crown. Loved their costumes. As much as I loved my Garfield uniform from 70-72, I also recall in particular attending th,e Princeton U P-rade in 1970, and seeing the disdain on the faces of the students there as we set up our arc wearing those marvelous uniforms. Given the times, wearing military-looking was hardly the thing to do for the average young person,k as much as I loved them.

  28. What a great year! I have just finished watching the whole open class finals! I love open class! Every show was a winner from top to bottom! I can't begin to express how many things I loved. From the drum tuning of Spartans and Genesis to the wonderful rendition of Grand Canyon Suit by Music City to the tremendous low brass of Gold! Not to mention all the others like 7th Regiment, Vanguard Cadets, Lgends, Colt Cadets, Raiders and Les Stentors. Thank you Patria for coming from Guatamala! I am so proud of my son in BDB and all the other corps also. Thank you and good luck next year!

  30. Gotta love how AtlantaCV is listed! I don't know about all, but it sure ought to be more than the ten or eleven corps that the parade site lists, that is if the announcement on DCA's web site last October was meant to be believed, meaning specifically this passage: "The City of Rochester, in helping recognize the importance of the 50th anniversary, has agreed to move their large Labor Day Parade from Labor Day Monday to Friday night, August 29th. The participating corps will join in the parade, making it the largest parade of the year in downtown Rochester. In excess of 100,000 people are expected to line the streets--a golden opportunity to show off the DCA participants and expose a huge number of non-drum corps enthusiasts to the activity just in time for the weekend's events. The last time this was done in Rochester was for the 1996 Championships, and it was done with just the competing corps, a fraction of what will be presented in 2014, That parade preceded the largest "modern era" crowd to attend a DCA Championship Finals." My emphasis added. Nothing posted on DCA's site since then (in December, January, or June) has contradicted the above. And several of those reports stressed how the weekend schedule had been reworked specifically due to corps' participation in the parade. Yet according to this Word document posted at the parade website, these are the corps participating; the parade is divided into nine "divisions", each with a separate staging area; I give spellings as from the list: Div. 1 D&B Band -- White Sabers Div. 2 D&B Band #2 -- Corvettes Div. 2 also features the Nate Rawls Band, the RMU Dixieland Band, the Bourbon Street Band. Div. 3 D&B Band #3 -- Sunrisers Div. 3-A D&B Band #4 -- Fusion Core Div. 4 D&B Band #10 -- Skyliners Excelsior Brigade Fife & Drum (=Excelsior D&B?) D&B Band #5 -- Govenienears Div. 5 D&B Band #6 -- Kilties Div. 6 D&B Band #7 -- Cincinnanti Tradition Div. 7 D&B Band #8 -- Toronto Optimists Div. 7-A D&B Band #9 -- Statesmen Alumni So why are Buccaneers, Caballeros, Minnesota Brass, Cadets2, Bushwackers, Carolina Gold, Hurricanes, Alliance, Windsor Regiment, and Sun Devils not appearing? Not to mention all the other alumni corps? I mean, in 1996, if DCA's October news item is correct, the parade apparently featured fifteen competing corps. I suppose that year's fifteen is "a fraction of" this year's eleven, but I don't think 15/11 is the sort of fraction implied by that quote! One more thing: in December, DCA also said, "Additionally, the Rochester Rhinos soccer team has a game at the stadium on Friday night, and one of our corps will perform at half time." Does anyone know if that's still happening, and if so, which corps is performing there?

  31. You know what? I've decided to necro this topic :-) because it's a fun one. 1: Star 1990 (Belshazzar's Feast) 2: BD 1984 (the one with La Fiesta) 3: Garfield 1984 (WSS) 4: Star 1991 (Roman Images) 5: Madison 1988 (the one with Malaguena) 6: SCV 1990 (Carmen) 7: SCV 1987 (Russian show) 8: Garfield 1985 (Jeremiah and Candide) 9: BD 1976 (the one with Channel One Suite) 10: Phantom 1993 (Modern Imagination) But yeah, Star '90 is the BEST EVAR.

  33. This is way too modern for me. Bring back the 40's when drum corps was drum corps!!! In the 40's, no one would turn their back to the audience! How dare they ruin the activity!

  34. I need to post my video of the Hormel Girls Drum & Bugle Corps, from Austin, MN. It's color and full sound, and it's from 1947. It may very well be the oldest color/sound video of a drum and bugle corps performing their field routine. It helps that the Hormel Company spared no expense in sponsoring this all-female senior corps back in the 1940s/50s, and they hired a professional film crew to do the honors.

  35. Hmm if entertainment is that much more important to you than competition, (and in that aspect I shockingly agree with you. I'll take entertaining over high placing which is why BK had my favorite show this year) then why are you so bummed about some corps supposedly not being entertaining and high placing? (please keep in mind entertaining is very subjective. I understand you have, er, older tastes but I found the top 12 pretty #### entertaining through and through)

  38. Hard luck? I believe you make your own luck. We go out and do our job, everyone after us is going to have to compare to that. We're going to control the things that we can control. Performance order, judging panels, all that other stuff is just wasted energy worrying about. We figure if we do what we know we are capable of, everything else will take care of itself. Can't wait to throw down next weekend and see what happens. Safe travels to everyone and we'll see you all Saturday afternoon. Dan

  43. Since both perfs were so similar, here's how to tell: after the company front in "Tonight" as the corps moves into the Z-pull, one of the baritones down front TRIPS over his own feet in the FINALS perf. He's the third guy in on the left (down front). After Whitewater, he probably crapped a little during the finale.
