  3. Regarding vaccination, this by Penn & Teller is accurate (I show it to my Biology classes when we get to the subject of vaccination). It has strong language from the get-go, but makes a good point.

  5. Citation needed. There are over 165 different vaccines for COVID currently being researched around the world. It is simply inaccurate to refer to "a COVID vaccine" in a generalization. Many side effects can be predicted. Others will be discovered in Phase 3 trials (human volunteer testing). The recent Russian vaccine did not perform a Phase 3 trial and is therefore very suspect. Any vaccine that is approved for use in Europe or North America will have completed and passed a Phase 3 trial. I will take any COVID vaccine with proven efficacy and a completed Phase 3 trial as soon as it is available. Side effects for the patient are usually indicated shortly after administration. All medications have a half-life in the body because as soon as they are administered the body starts processing them to break them down. This is why people with chronic medical conditions need to take the same drug every day, or multiple times a day. Any short-term side effects for the patient would be immediate, and long-term side effects are largely foreseeable. You mention thalidomide. Thalidomide is a drug still in use today, vital in the treatment of many cancers and leprosy. The tragic thalidomide side effects were not directly to the patient being administered the drug, but only to pregnant women's fetuses. The drug makers did not perform any studies on pregnant women and did not consider the very real possibility of the drug crossing the placental barrier. But the side effects were ENTIRELY PREDICTABLE. The United States of America did not suffer the thalidomide tragedy because of a brilliant doctor by the name of Frances Oldham Kelsey. While working for the FDA, Dr. Kelsey had specific concerns regarding the drug's safety (especially in pregnant women) and refused to approve it for use in the United States. Her concerns were 100% accurate and fully vindicated when the horror stories started emerging from Europe and Canada. The whole mess could have been avoided had proper research been done. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_Oldham_Kelsey

  6. The member in question did not have a driver's license, thus he had no age ID on him. However, he was a college student. The bursar's office was open (it was a Friday). Thank God, we had a cooperative person on the other end of the phone....colleges have dob on all students..........she confirmed his dob and that he would not be 22 until October. Pesceone called the college, got the info confirmed, and that was the end of it.

  8. I would guess that of the 2020 corps, over half of them were from Tennessee and the surrounding states of Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, etc. And probably 30+ were from the Nashville area.

  9. It is certainly not insignificant. They gave us until 3 PM to prove that the member was 21 and not overage. At that moment, we had nothing, due to a misplaced birth certificate file (which they did track down much later), and the member had nothing that proved his age on him. It would have been interesting to see what would have gone down had we not proven his age by 3 PM. Those who filed the claim certainly had no proof....but they went forward anyway. If the 1980 Cadets had been disqualified, it is safe to say that the corps most likely would not have recovered; I do think the corps would have survived not making finals, but a dq? No. Only 4 corps in 48 years have ever been disqualified in DCI (there also was an attempt on SCV, but they had a few foreign members who presented phony documents, so the corps was not penalized, as they showed DCI the documents. I know some folks who were part of those 4 corps, and it was gut wrenching for all. Three of the four are gone.....only the Crossmen remain.

  11. That’s what the way too young looking doctor told us. Part of the problem is it takes a while to make the huge number of doses needed so the process starts before flu season really arrives. And sometimes your area is just weird and gets a different strain than most of the country

  15. No one on the forum is anti - vax The polling data for the group that do not want to get the covid vaccine if it comes available is interesting. The list of prominent celebrities people who are anti-vaxxers is troubling. Some have changed their tune since March?

  21. I think it remains to be seen. In February most of us didn’t expect Covid to be all that serious, then we hit panic mode and stores ran out of paper towels and toilet paper because the world was ending! When a vaccine is available, everything could change. Most years the flu vaccine is “better safe than sorry” with a wide range of effectiveness. I used to opt out because quite frankly, I seem to be immune to everything but now I do get the flu shot because I may not catch most things, but according to my doctor I am beginning to get some of the “over 50” health issues. When a Covid vaccine is available, I think we will see more than 1/3rd of the people get it. It may become one of the required vaccines for school, and doctors most likely will recommend it. It could also become like the toilet paper mad rush. Once we run out, everyone will want it!

  22. Trying to remember last time I had a flu shot. Few years back got a new doctor (about half my age... if that 😖). She (yeah she 😳) works family practice for a teaching hospital so is up to date on info. Few times got told the vaccine flu strain was not the same strain as what was going around so don’t bother getting a shot. Other times the percentage of getting flu even with the shot was nasty so my call.

  24. I heard 1 out of 3 people will not go to a WGI show either. In all due seriousness, this is not surprising. Far fewer people get inoculated for flu, where vaccines are not a scary new thing.

  25. First off,I've seen polls that show as many as 60% of the people polled won't take a vaccine when it first comes out. I'm not an antivaxxer, but there is no way I'm taking a a Covid vaccine for at least a year or two. Especially one they are rushing to get into the market. The clinical tests they're doing are intended to see if the vaccine is effective against Covid. 50% effective is considered acceptable. The concern I have is side effects. They take a while to show up. I'm old enough to remember the worst example of side effects showing up after the fact. The Thalidomide tragedies. How long a vaccine is effective especially with a virus like Covid, also shows up over time. Some reports estimate 6-8 months, tops.

  27. I think those are checked off in their medical packet for all contracted members. Most all members have gone through the public school system where most all of the standard vaccinations are required by their respective state law to attend the public school system. Those laws could easily be updated to include the CV-19 injection and/or included in the requirements for all marching members. Of course there's the added advantage of the chip that will be included to track all member's movements. The chip will also allow the corps to control the member's spending of currency and their diet. And thoughts; add their thoughts & all cognitive/critical thinking processes.

  28. WGI held a zoom call with the local circuit partners and regional show hosts last weekend. The message from that conference call was to look for a decision on WGI 2021 by sometime in November. Many local circuits are planning a season to start in late Jan. or Feb. There was talk about making regionals a 1 day single performance and also about virtual performances. Most scholastic groups do not start practice until fall sports has ended in late Nov. so the Nov date seems logical for a decision. Independent Groups do tend to start their auditions in Sept. or Oct. They may want to delay that process until a decision by WGI is made.

  30. HIPAA would not have an impact on that scenario. The HIPAA act refers to the release of confidential medical information by medical staff without the patient's knowledge/consent. Per the CDC website: The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) is a federal law that required the creation of national standards to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient's consent or knowledge.

  31. Yep... welcome to reality people. I worked at a military base. I got to show ID to people with guns every work day. And right after 9/11 got my car random checked with the bomb sniffing Rin Tin Tin one morning. Guess I’m weird, I thought it was interesting....

  32. And there’s the HIPPA aspect to consider if any housing sites inquire about vaccinations for Covid. How does that get communicated?

  33. I’m guessing that query will be added to any health docs the members fill out if they get a contract or confirm health status before participating

  36. Not so sure 2021 DCI will cancel if WGI is cancelled. WGI would be underway next month with auditions, then go right into rehearsals, then to performances. To do so however, they’d need schools at least through March. Schools are a mess right now as classes are being decided to be in person, hybrid or remote. Having to create the physical logistics required for people to be in school buildings is a huge question mark nationally. DC on the other hand was headed into March and fairly well positioned to go into ST’s. Most corps, those who survive this, and that’s another discussion, likely have kept all or most of their designed programs and members from last year. DC can maybe start in February or March or possibly later, if conditions allow. What those specific conditions are, we don’t yet know; vaccines, therapeutics, masks, distancing. What can be reasonably assumed is there will be some kind of new normal.

  37. I can say I am shocked that a certain person did not reply to the O.P. with "Its too early , right now its all about the bands" makes ya think that type of reply was reserved for certain situations. Who knew.

  38. first off the real money WGI makes in the hundreds to thousands of scholastic groups going to regionals and/or finals week. But the key is access to schools for both: schools to rehearse in, schools to have shows in ( remember most events are not held in large independently owned arenas, and in fact most championships week facilities are tied to schools). so if school groups can't rehearse, what's the odds independent groups will be allowed in? Right now most of the fall activity is not hosting live shows and heck most places require whatever marching band they can have rehearse outside...so if it rains, well, no rehearsal. Until there's more clarity, anything that may be written in pencil will probably not be seen on any website. The longer everything drags on, the less likely it's going to be....and i doubt with mass distribution of a vaccine, anything is going to happen

  39. 40 years ago,in 1980, North Star Drum and Bugle Corps filed a formal protest against the Garfield Cadets, just after the Cadets prelim performance, for an alleged overage member. There was a delay settling the dispute due to a misplacement of the birth certificate file (which was found later that day), but the corps used another satisfactory way to prove the member's age, and proved that the member was indeed 21 years old, but not overage. The Cadets did not "return the malice", and a small number of people (including myself) have kept this largely quiet for 40 years now.....but it is an important story in the corps' history. A large majority of the corps members from 1980 are/were not even aware of this, and even some staff. We did not want to dampen the spirits of anyone on a great day for the corps. I will also say that I do not believe that the members of North Star were aware of this, but the staff definitely was.

  40. And getting the flu may be the lesser of two evils... other evil having the wife mad at you 😖 Have a check up appt end of September. Will see what I get told this year about flu shot. While I sit there and keep telling myself “she studied at UPMC and interned at Jefferson, she only LOOKS like a high school student teacher”. 🤯 edit: Dr D is very knowledgeable, able to get the info across to you and actually listens. Pure luck we found this one....
