  1. First of all, you haven't gotten a response and you are jumping, ping to a huge conclusion here Alumni groups are ALL ADULTS. Soundsport groups DO background check staff, but the participants are all KIDS. DCI doesn't;t background check the performers either because they are kids. They all complete safesport. What else do you expect DCI to do? Do you have anything to do all day rather than stir up drama here? And what does any of your post have to do with the cadets bakruptcy. Why do you insist on turning every thread into a "DCI isn't doing enough and doesn[t care". In Keith’s defense, I did remove my posts because I’m kind of tired of getting beat up all the time when I chime in about this stuff. We’re also Facebook friends so he knows I’m not the demon some would make me out to be. The members I’ve met are pretty great people. I’d just like for them to have a good time marching without having to deal with a lot of other stuff. That’s all.

  3. 1997 is perhaps my favorite. I still remember being gobsmacked first time I saw it. The rest of DCI was standing still in comparison. OTOH Cadets shows I didn't like are few and far between.

  4. well, the fact it wasn't a corps sponsored function would have been an area i'd have gone after. also, if true, that the victim has a history of filing these lawsuits yet has had no victories, then there's a pattern and motive there. again, i don't condone what happened to the victim, nor do i condone the victim not being removed from staff, even in the rules or lack thereof in 1982. but with someone that specializes in this type of legal situation, i'm thinking the right lawyer makes a difference.

  11. I'll play!!! Terri makes common sense statements! I think every member might need to be checked. As in the past, some members have had issues with sex abuse. If you go back decades you'll find out it happened a lot in this activity. No one said things back in the 70's. By this time DCI should protect themselves and the activity from pedophiles and others. It's not the 70's, it's 2024 and we have seen the evil things that have happened in drum corps and the directors of each corps (along with their BOD) should clean up ALL of our activity. I won't recommend a student to march with any corps. Today the staff's are so large, any creep could hide amongst the rest. Who watches them? Who notices a staff member getting to friendly with a corps member? No security, NO safety! If I had children old enough to march I would say NO today! Terri makes valid statements and probably based on knowledge as she marched in some pretty good corps! 12. In fact, the hardest thing about this is staff getting over their winning egos and enforcing the No-F mandate.

  13. Any subsequent corps that lawyers can link, or portray as a successor. At this point, you probably cannot bring back Marion Cadets - they had both name and uniform similarities. The whole Erie area is probably banned from starting anything right now, despite having had corps of their own in the past. And forget anything tied to the Bonfiglio family. Surprised they are not dragging Blue Devils into it just for taking over the band circuit.

  14. That standard is all over churches now as yes, it was written by legal teams in the employ of the insurance industry who then made it a stipulation of your insurance coverage for liability. Like most things in America, laws that legislate behavior can be tough to enforce but laws/policies that hit the pocketbook are more effective.

  16. I love threads like this. Now imagine being the corps trying to hire buses with no destination, housing location, mileage, hotel rooms secured for drivers, etc etc etc. Where is laundry? pharmacy? urgent care? emergency room? banks? grocery? where does my food company drop my order from US foods or the like? if I have staff flying in or out ... which airport do I tell them? I know I know ... it's hard being a fan.

  19. I’m not a lawyer, and no I’ve never played one on TV, but I’m thinking the right lawyer could have some of the bankruptcy judge’s rulings overturned. The wrong lawyer could also have them etched in stone. For one thing, Cadets is such a generic name in drum corps, just look on DCX and you see tons of corps named Cadets, and maroon and gold uniforms are not trademarked. I could see where FHNSAB, Holy Name or Garfield attached could be too close to the original, and I could see where people associated with Cadets beginning a new corps with the same name would be problematic, but there could be room for compromise, namely if alums not associated with the corps in an official capacity wanted to restart it. The question for me is would it be the same or has too much water passed under the bridge?

  22. Yes, period. If kids are being taught that drum corps is life then with stardom comes incredible responsibility. The higher you get on the totem pole, the more your a** shows. It is the way of all life. Still, I personally thinks it's silly to try to regulate hormone-filled kids' Roman tongues and Russian fingers. Incredibly hard to legislate morality beyond teaching but harsh mandates, as in all public adult life, are suitable motivators if known and enforced.

  23. so in a few places i've seen online or a few chats i have had with trusted individuals, as i expected, more details seem to be slowly seeping out. now please don't take this next part as victim shaming..i'm not. but it appears the victim filed several other lawsuits of a similar nature and didn't win any of them. i'm no legal expert, and i have no idea where to look, but a quick search on my end found none of them, but i am sure i'm not looking in the right places. i'm not a lawyer, i dont play one on tv, and i don't even watch them on tv. why do i bring that up? did CAE's lawyers use this in their legal maneuvers? Were CAE's lawyers even experts in the field? i'm told attorneys that specialize in these cases were recommended to the board, and the board chose to go the route they did and play the odds. well it's clear that didn't work. was it trust? was it cost? i get it, good legal representation isn't cheap, but if fighting for your existence, i'd think you'd figure out a way to get experts in the field you're dealing with that has a good record. it's apparently no secret it happened with the victim and the abuser. but that it was not a corps sponsored activity has bothered me from day one. Yes, the corps should have dismissed him. in fact, any corps admin at this gathering should have stopped it then. but i still wonder how liable the corps really should be for that? But again, that comes down to who the board had representing them. for $1,000 a month ( a number i've seen floated several places) i can't imagine you're getting Will Gardner or ALicia Florrick ( i have watched that show 2/3 times, hence how i know the names). But...this is a board that allowed Scott to be pushed out, and hired someone who it's publicly known lost in court over fraudulent charity issues. And gave that person more power on paper than Hop had. And how'd that work out? Well....that person fired a certified legend after issues over member safety and finances came out after the season. and the move to Erie...going hand in hand with the sports facility that as has come out over time wasn't always in the best graces of their city. none of my info came from CAE Board members, and i do not claim it to be 100% accurate. i wouldn't trust anything a CAE board member said anyways based on my interactions with 2 of them. But the more that keeps coming out, the more I see that this board...well....didn't do their jobs. who cares however may MBA's or whatever else degrees they had, it seemed to be all about the loyal and faithful and maroon and gold. and as i see more and more seeping out online, in the end....lawsuit or no....it was going to fail anyway. and it seems if any of this is true, the lawsuit showed they couldn't handle it. so while many wat to blame the victim...hell CAE did in their press release....i think in the end, the ultimate failure is on the board, who sat on a ticking time bomb that the lawsuit only got to exploe sooner than later.,

  24. I agree with you. But on the other hand it's infuriating and it sucks that so many people that did nothing wrong have to suffer because of the actions of a few (the few in this case being the predators) I say that because if we went this route, it would suck for the 18-19 year old that wants to march drum corps but maybe can't do a full world class tour because of other commitments, so a local open class corps fits more of their schedule. Not to mention goodbye Blue Devils C. But I get it and I agree with you. Just sucks that it only takes a few "Bleep Bleep Curse Curse"........ to ruin it for others. But if it has to be done, then so be it.

  25. Different youth sports leagues have age (both minimum & maximum) requirements. So could DCI - Open Class (say) age 14 through 17; when you hit 18 then you are in World Class. There would need to be cut off dates, just like there are currently for hitting age 22 during the season.

  30. Do you think it’s enough? How about implementing this policy: there shall be a minimum of TWO adults when in the presence of a sole minor. And, to the corps members, if you EVER come across one adult and one minor alone in private together, you are expected to report it to (insert the correct single point of contact) immediately. All persons will be assumed innocent but out an abundance of caution we will investigate every occurrence. I suppose many will consider this “too hard” to implement. Well, how important to you is the activity’s survival? Would you not take whatever measures are necessary? This is a solid policy that is used in many organizations.

  31. The safe sport training is activity wide. As a staff member, the amount of training I receive is far and beyond what I have to do for any other activity I’m involved in. (Coaching youth baseball and volunteering with the high school musicals for set construction). It’s also far more than our 15 minute sexual harassment training taken yearly for work. It’s probably never enough, but there’s frequent reminders, spelled out in my teaching contracts, in separate policy documents. It’s taken very seriously by the two drum corps I have recently taught and I’ve heard no different from my friends and past members teaching across the activity. There’s some people that will never be satisfied or convinced that it’s enough. That’s fine, but it’s a huge improvement over what existed five years ago. I’m not sure what more could be done right now but making the minimum age 18 would be best in my mind.

  33. on a hot Sunday afternoon at Cedar Cliff HS in July 83, the Cadets changed everything i thought i knew about drum corps. a lot of the crowd were stunned, not fully understanding what they were seeing, but knowing it was good. i saw it as the way things were going to go. a year later, same stadium, WSS. it cemented everything i thought the year before. after the year, getting the VHS of 82, i saw where it all started. and 87 was the icing on the cake. if 89 had had the same ending for at least half the year, man they could have done damage

  34. There are plenty of years that the gold medal show wasn't my favorite show that season. Heck i can admit as a BD Honk, there are some years BD wins, their show isn't my favorite on the field that year. 2015, like it or not, Crown had no one to blame but themselves. They had a flat run, while BD arguably laid down their best run of the year. If Crown matched their Semi's run on finals night, we might be having a different conversation. Crown left the door open, BD walked thru it. Period. 2019. Honestly, I was fine with either BD or Bloo winning it. As fans we were lucky to have two worthy gold medal shows. The fans won that year. That Saturday night, it happened to go to BD. If there was a Sunday night, that easily could have went to Bloo. And the Bloo fans were EXTREMELY classy here on DCP that night. I remember that clearly because that's when I became a huge fan of Bloo's fanbase. Bloo fans are my favorite followed by BAC fans. Great fanbases. The hatred and nonsense that was being spewed on DCP that night in 2019 after scores were announced weren't from Bluecoats fans. It was the ABBD crowd and other assortments of basement trolls.

  38. So the man in the original suit is deceased, and now so are Cadets. All that's left for her lawyers to go after now is DCI itself. That may be a tough case to make considering it allegedly took place at a New Years Eve party 42 years ago.

  40. Really? Bluecoats did a Beatles show without any Beatles music. I know I'll get shot for this, but it's true. It was, actually, my favorite show of 2019 and I felt it should have won based on it's merits and the extremely high performance levels, but it wasn't musical at all. The musical elements of the show were just a technical exercise with the Beatles music as an underlying component, overshadowed by the vast and endless runs. That's not music. WHAT THE BEATLES HAD WRITTEN IS MUSIC, and Lennon is a much better composer and orchestrator than the Bluecoats music staff. I don't mean to rag on the Bluecoats, because they are not alone. EVERYTHING is written for the judges and nothing is written for the fans. There is no musicality today, or there is rather very little. If the Bluecoats just played the Beatles music without all the runs tossed in all over the place, they wouldn't have scored as well because it wouldn't have been deemed as having as much content. But, it would have been a hell of a lot better. I quite enjoy modern DCI but musically it doesn't hold a candle the golden era. Listen to Regiment's 1996 opener and how it just built and bulit and built over 4 minutes to it's thundering conclusion. THAT is music. THAT is musicality. How the hell can a corps achieve that today when they are playing 15 different pieces in 10 minutes and the hornline is only playing for 4 of them?

  42. Terri literally just confirmed via emails with DCI that it's not activity wide, but okay. I'm honestly glad that it's better than it has been. Great. Nothing I've seen indicates that it's close to other training options available, including the free, multi-hour, text based modules available thru Safe Sport International that you have to test out of. As for some people never being convinced... it's not because we keep moving the goal posts... it's because predators will always seek new ways of breaking into safeguarding systems. They must be updated and improved regularly. This is another SSI principle, not just some arbitrary moving of the goal posts by yours truly. I've done the homework for the last decade so I have a strong sense of what's out there.
