  2. Favorite quiet moment, right before Brandt Crocker announced 2nd place in 2008. I would have felt bad if anyone farted, because it would have echoed in that stadium

  4. I feel it will come out alphabeticaly. 1-Bushwackers 2-Cadets 2 3-Corpsvets 4-Empire Statesmen 5-Fusion Core 6-Hawthorne 7-Hurricanes 8-Kidsgrove 9-Kilties 10-Minnesota Brass 11-Reading Buccanears 12-Renegades 13-Tampa Bay Thunder Of course the hard part was deciding between the town name and there corps name. Hawthorne was easy but got screwewd out of 4 spots. Hurricanes could have been Connecticut but most people call them Hurcs. It's just easier. Nobody called Bush, "Harrison", so they will not call them Princeton (unless they want). Cadet 2 will never be known as Holy Name and/or Garfield. Just like Bush noone calls CV, Empire, Fusion Core ( I really don't know where they are from anyway ),Kilties and Renegades by there town name. I assume Kidsgrove is the town name so they get pushed up 5 spots by not being Scouts. Of course Mn. Brass and Bucs really get screwed by useing State and town name. It's drum corps, it happens. Don't blame me, I did not invent the alphabet. Reading edges Renegades by a vowel. Tampa Bay and Thunder stay steady either way. I heard Argonne is starting a Sr. corps for 2013....hmmmm... Also the Govenaires are changing there name to Agovenaires Larry P Music Director (Agovenaires)

  5. 2008 Carolina Crown -Claire de Lune -One Hand One Heart -Somewhere 2009 Carolina Crown -Tenderland (beginning) -Somewhere Over the Rainbow -Somewhere 2010 Carolina Crown -Nimrod Variations There have been many beautiful quiet moments through the history of DC. IMO the above are the most incredible - I have a hard time finding the exact words to describe the control that hornline displays when playing quietly (let alone at a greater volume!). I guess Linda Richman (Mike Myers) would describe it best......"It's like Buttah!"

  6. Agree. Since when is a poster a show announcement? At the very least they could have posted an incomprehensible paragraph of text describing the ground-breaking innovations of their show concept!

  7. Why should guards be any different, Liz? There are many corps out there that don't have a complete program 'til August. I've been ranting about this for years, but it hasn't changed (and probably never will). Obviously, the dollars that audiences (remember them?)spend in June or July aren't worth as much as those spent in August. Just my personal gripe...

  8. I guess I'm just an elitist snob these days then (and have been for years apparently). I DESPISE guards not having any work for 1/2 or 3/4ths of the first show or the first few weeks. I've made no bones about it here too for quite a while. I don't give a #### if it is clean yet but don't walk around through the drill with no equipment in your hands, or worse yet, go sit down on the sideline, for a good portion of the show. I don't care if you do 100 straight counts of drop spins, but visually SOMETHING is better than NOTHING (IMO). (And yes, I know most DCA guards have a month or so to learn the entire show once winterguard ends. Yet somehow the drumlines are getting together practicing with the corps in the winter and they have winter percussion......this one confuses me and bothers me greatly, to the point I worry that soon there won't be guards with complete guard books out there until August.)

  9. Thanks for starting this thread, I love reading the predictions. My prediction is that the competition between corps is going to be fierce!!! You never know what a new year will bring. Good Luck to everyone

  12. I posted this back in Sep after 2011 Finals--for reference only, not implying anything scientific, your measurements/perceptions may vary, etc. ATL Thread Indy Prelim Thread ====================================================================================== [i thought this might be better in its own thread since it's really about the Indy Preliminaries measurements.] I really didn't have great seats for Prelims this year -- Section 139 Row 23 Seat 10 which is the next to last row in the back of the lower section on about the right 40 yd line -- so I was considering not posting the Prelim measurements, but why not? Overall, it looks like the Prelims were a few dB below Atlanta mainly because I was a bit further back. Below, the first number is from Atlanta, the 2nd number is the Indy Prelim measurement (loudest value). We'll try again next year. I promise I'll upgrade my meter so I won't have to switch ranges, so I won't miss anything. 15. Warning.... Warning... Never get into a disagreement with someone that has a particular corps as their avatar. Otherwise if don't predict their corps moving from 10th to top six you will never hear the end of it.

  17. but yet a corps like Bucs that comes in with at least the skeleton of the show done, and few if any holes in work, gets accused of having the judges give it to them via reputation.

  20. Informed by this discussion, Im prepared to suggest a list of guidelines for all corps to follow in matters such as these. They are: Members joining the corps after the March/February/January/December camp may not be soloists. This is an abomination. Corps concerned that current members might not be sufficiently prepared or talented to handle their programming requirements are mistaken or misguided. Having made the corps is prima facie qualification for all things properly drum corps. Thinking otherwise is an abomination. Transparency has no place in drum corps. It is an abomination to think honest disclosure of your intentions and motives is a good thing. It is not. Money in drum corps is an abomination. Now that we know, I propose we enact these and codify them as The World-Wide Bill of Inalienable Rights for the Noble Performers in Brass, Percussion, Saber, Rifle and Flag as Part of Drum & Bugle Corps. Of course, as this name is cumbersome, these rights will be known by the more convenient moniker: Criticizing Cadets Clauses. Mark time march? HH

  22. SCV '00 - Tag ending of Stained Glass. Stunning. I'd like to add the transition from Adagio to Stained Glass to the list, but we all know what happened there. Generally any soft ending from Vanguard counts among my favorite "quiet" moments.

  26. I was up top on the 50 and from where I was at, Crown sounded mf whereas BD, Phantom, Bloo, OC, BK, and even Bones sounded monstrous. Hell, even PC and Academy got up there too at some points! If I can feel the sound on my face, it's mother fletching loud! Sorry, but I think your decibel meters are broken fellas.

  38. it's June...who's clean? if you're that clean in June, your design will peak in Mid July. You go out as clean as you can be, and get feedback on the design...whats working, what isn't. Then, you go and tweak what you may need to, as well as keep cleaning. See if you've got the skeleton on the field by Wildwood, as you fill in the missing pieces of flesh, you can deep clean as you go. If you're still filling holes, adding show that isn't done, you lose deep cleaning time. so in essence, say while Bucs or MBI were deep cleaning last year, others will still tweaking and hoping to get to where they could do some deep cleaning.

  41. I think that this is the year that we should all step back and wait it out till the end. So much going on and lots of uncertainty about alot of corps. I would rather wait until August to even make a prediction. Usually the placings by then are pretty accurate. Not like the old days when you could place 5th one day and the next win the show by 5 points.

  42. Check the recaps. Apparently SCV scores well enough to beat those other corps. Just look at last year. Yeah, their brass was in about 10th, but their percussion was 4th at Finals, and everything else hovered around 6th, so it balanced out. It doesn't seem to be the judges fault, there is no big DCI conspiracy. They put corps where they deserve, based on their performance that night.

  43. BEST SPECIALTY EQUIPMENT Blessed Sac's teeny-weeny flags and itty-bitty rifles How totally FUN were the 'Mini-Me' pieces of equipment used by the Munchkins as they marched around on their knees...??? And the Munchkin who was featured at the front of the Munchkin gang actually performed a legitimate toss with his pint-sized rifle. I could watch that sequence of Blessed Sac's show over and over and over. More...!!!

  46. The most extreme example: Duncanville H.S. back in 1991. Won High Music. 12th out of 12 bands in Visual at Finals. In Texas's defense, though, what they accomplish is incredible, especially considering the UIL Practice Restrictions (no one is allowed to practice more than 8 hours per week in any activity: band, football, cheer, etc). With the time limitations, yeah, I'd be focusing on Music over Visual, too. For comparison, last I checked, the Plymouth-Canton (MI) marching band practices 15-20 hours per week.

  47. Does anyone know if any corps are about to announce? Waiting this late is becoming very annoying.

  48. I have no idea if any corps is going to have an advantage, disadvantage, or whatever in the early going. All I do know is that: 1) The DCA season opens in Wildwood. Any weekend at the Jersey Shore is a good weekend, as far as I'm concerned. 2) The Barnum Festival on June 30 will feature last year's DCA top five, plus the Bushwackers and several alumni corps. All for an admission price of five dollars. Five bucks!!! So... bring on those first two shows!
