  1. lol the down-with-crown gang has appeared! of course there are similiarities to the past. guess what: Bocook arrangments sound like Bocook arrangments -- every season. Chandler guards look like Chandler guards -- every season. Gaines drill looks--wait -- strike that. Anyway... If you didn't like Klesch/Markworth/Hannum/Townsend/Potter designs in the past, you probably won't like them in 2014. And if Crown beat your team last season and you didn't undestand why. they're gonna do it again this season and you STILL won't know why.

  2. And the Crown-can-do-wrong homers have reared their heads. Heaven forbid someone offer a critique (I suspect you have a time or three). If you don't think the 2014 is amazingly similar to 2013, you should rewatch.

  3. I know, right? Trampolines year after year. Trample Crown in 2007, Grassoline in 2009, Common Tramp in 2012...

  4. People really are making a big deal out of nothing. This male costume is basically the same cut as Cavies "Spin cycle" show!! Besides, teens and young adults in other sports wear costumes as tight as these, and sometimes more reviling than this regularly. For example: wrestling, dance, cheer, cycling, ballet. If people would stop sexualizing everything and take it for what it is, a costume, in keeping with the theme of the show, then there would be no issue I see nothing wrong with the costume!!!!

  5. More than the show, my major takeaway from the feed: The Crown organization is incredible. The director knows how to assemble a staff and keep them happy (or so it seems). I wish a team in Rockford would take note...

  7. IIRC he said "...and took California, and the rest of the country, by storm." Meaning that Crown went to California and the fans really liked them.

  8. WOW.. That closer has a lot of notes. It has the potential to be an AMAZING show. It does.. It screams that. (Also, love the Jupiter quote at the end of the ballad) Its feels a bit disjointed but its june. But, its a LOT of notes and it honestly feels like a continuation of last season. Can't wait to watch it evolve over the summer. also the frisbee part I think is super effective overall. Also dat first hit.

  9. Please. This thread is 98% crown-gasm. Which is cool. But a few critical comments won't hurt. And a couple of them MIGHT be accurate. It's June 15th. But hey ... haters!!!!! lolol!!

  10. BD used like 100 chairs a couples of years ago. Like 100 poles last year. Like 20 mirrors one year. Enough PVC poles to make the outline of a house one year. 10 something rolling tables, and 20 something chairs this year. BD is the King or Queen of props.

  16. Just got back. No they didn't wear the guard uniform. All day I was really on the fence about the corps uniform and the drums etc. They waited a good 20 minutes before even coming on to the field. Man! They LOOK SHARP! Those shako's it is a reflection. It's all "chrome" and there is no white stripe either reflection also. Those drums look so good under the lights! in the day time it's so so to me. I have to say they are so ready it's not even funny! Cadets do one hand splits but half as fast as these guys do. Whoa! a little bit of dirt in the tenor feature but they changed it and I can tell it was no more than two days ago and much much harder. gonna be killer next week I guarantee! This show is the total package! You gotta see this show! Whoa!

  17. First thing I thought of when I saw BD's new uniform was Capital Regiment 2009 minus the drop sash and silver sleeve

  18. IDK, as others have pointed out I think we're well beyond that point now. If that's the case (spoiler: it is), I really like what Crown has done the last two years with costuming & colors. The way they integrate the costuming into their visual design is amazing, and it really sets them apart from almost every other corps in DCI. Also, if it's between Crown 2013 and 2014, and a corps uniform like, say, Madison Scouts lately that looks kind of like a short-sleaved janitor uniform, I'll take costume any day of the week. But that's why we have diversity in the activity: I can love me some Crown costumes and you can love you some old-school Cadets (or whomever you really like)

  20. I think I'm going to just go ahead and shamelessly ask this here: If anyone has a private video of them, even if it's just audio, could you secretly send it to me over PM? Nothing will be said of it ever :)

  22. I wrote up a little mini review: I'll start with some personal criticism's, which there's not a lot of. - Seems disjointed section to section, which is a typical early season problem. - Field looks VERY cluttered right now, the sheer amount of equipment is pretty overwhelming. Not sure if that is something they can fix. - The "Shadow Behind the Iron Sun", aka the car muffler section, was cool, and then it kept going, and going, and going. It honestly lost a little bit of momentum for me. - There were two things that kinda bugged me. The lofting of the Frisbee, which just looked like they were chucking them, not really floating like a Frisbee should. And the trampolines, hope they have more planned there because they did not add too much to me. They just kinda jumped on them for a minute and got off. What they said before the show has me hopeful that more will be added. The Positives: - Obviously the brass, I mean come on. I don't even need to say anything. - Drill design seems more interesting than last year, the closer was really cool in this regard. - Color Guard seems very strong, personally love the choice of uniform and flags. - Percussion, again seem better. Front ensemble sounds REALLY strong to me, drums are getting there. Sound better than when I saw Crown rehearse live last year. - LOVED the "Space Oddity" intro, thought it really set up the mood for the show. - Opener very strong, ballad gorgeous...and: - HOLY COW that closer! I loved it, really got that coming home feeling, and they brought it in. Having listened to the source music, there are that many notes in it. They're not just playing notes for notes sake here, it's all in the originals. If they can keep improving the percussion, work out the transitions and weave the show together more, and make the field appear less cluttered, I'll be 100% all over it and it'll probably be my favorite Crown show. Personally enjoy this one a lot more than when I saw them rehearse live last year, which I enjoyed quite a bit. Looking like another strong season for Crown, I say top 3 for sure. Will it be enough to hold off The Cadets and Blue Devils, and maybe another corps or two? We'll see. But I personally really enjoyed that. Happy 25th Crown! Love you guys!

  23. Hmmmmm....mirrors, chairs, poles. If BD had "very little" of them, I'd hate to see a copious amount.

  24. This show has some great potential, but it feels really disjointed at this point, as in I could clearly feel where the opener, drum feature, ballad, and closer started and stopped, but it's June, so that can be worked out. The space theme can probably be sold a bit more, and maybe some work can be put in during that 'muffler' percussion feature (it was too long and didn't have enough going on for my taste, but I do love that sound). I am glad they have an actual percussion feature as well. It was awfully dirty, but it's before the actual season, so I forgive that, and it has some good vocabulary. That brass can play. Wow. 100 times wow. However, maybe it's too much. It feels like, "Look at all the notes our brass can play," followed by, "Have some big block chords!" There is some great possibility to make the brass book more melodic, so I hope they water down the technicality a bit in favor of that. And for the love of all that is holy, play Jupiter! You tease and tease and tease at the planets, and then when I can feel a big Jupiter section, you go into a technical brass part (which is quite amazing, but nowhere near as effective or interesting as a big fat Jupiter chorus). Turquoise works much better in comparison to purple, but I still miss the cream (looks like it's gone for good). The guard uniforms are not great, but I've not been impressed with most of the guard uniforms this year. Looking forward to see this show grow over the summer.

  34. So, will we need to sticky the uniforms thread next year right below the programs thread? With links to pictures as released by the corps, in place of the spotify links?

  36. Props are nothing new for Crown (both recently and in their history). So I wouldn't expect any sort of conflicted feelings about them. That said... The show doesn't really revolve around the props. Personally I think the tramps are going to be a challenge for them. If they could launch someone high enough to get that "floating in space" moment it would be cool. The flip side (pun intended) is that it would take two performers on a single tramp and could be pretty dangerous. I think they'll be "playing" with them the entire season trying different things out. And I expect they'll be used pretty well by the end of the season. They also remind me (admittedly a sci-fi nerd) of some sort of the launch facility. So even as static props they kind of set the stage.

  37. So funny to read these opinions. It's like someone publishes talking points for BD fans. 1. notes for note's sake (um someone needs to listen to the originals) 2. effect for effect's sake (face value ridiculous as ALL effect is for effects sake (duh?) 3. like watching a BOA show (instead of watching WGI shows?) I must watch the wrong BOA shows 'cause I've never seen any HS program march, play or spin anything close to Crown's book. but hey maybe there's a secret regional i don't know about. lulz Oh well the thing that caught MY attention about the BD show: BD shows are now entirely prop driven. The props have take center stage and the performers merely window dressing for the props and their logistics. Sure this makes for seamless movement of the props but it rapidly degenerates into watching how the drill's only purpose is to support the props. It actually becomes a big distraction. Musically the most coherent show in quite some time. Arranging is a bit less ADHD. Oh I forgot: yeah, I like it :-)

  38. Nope. Nor have I weighed in with an opinion. But it seems you may not understand the definition of "qualified opinion". But it doesn't seem to be slowing you down any. Oh, and your opinion about Crown seems to be a minority view. Everyone else seems to be blown away by what they've seen. Makes me think you're just another non-objective BD homer. From what I read, Cadets (aside from staging), Crown and BD are all putting some great stuff out there this year.

  40. Based on the recap, it seems like the effect judges were at 2 different shows. Cabs...and the rest of the circuit, have got to be encouraged that we may finally have a legitimate competition for the top spot. And one has to feel good for the Cabs, who had the guts and determination to hang tough and compete against what sometimes must have seemed like an insurmountable obstacle. Even though they did not win this time, their efforts deserve respect.

  44. ... or conversely, if the 2 Guard members were depicted side by side standing at attention, then maybe it takes on a different assessment by peope too, who knows. But when the pose has a female marcher in a sexualized pose herself and then her hand is shown on the chest zipper of the male guard member, others might think you are just being apparently temporarily blind to not understand how some people might view this pic in a sexualized way. ' just sayin. There is another pic of 3 woman BD Guard members standing side by side, smiling, and you'd be hard pressed to find any asssessment that their pose for that pic was of an intended sexualized nature by the 3 females... thus, no such assessment of THAT BD pic in that fashion was made here on DCP by any posters.

  45. I have no problem with the uniforms, but when you have one member unzipping the other member's uniform and both of them have "the look" that they have, some could argue that it looks sexual. So some could argue that THEY kinda sexualized the picture. I don't really care, but I can see how it could be taken this way. Also, checking there's a LOT of sex in Fellini's stuff, so maybe they ARE trying to have some element of that in their show. I dunno. I don't care. but it's valid for discussion *(if one is old enough to talk about that stuff).
