  1. Or just mention the Indiana law in one of the threads. That'll be sure to get it closed down. :bleah:

  2. This petition is poorly written and a histrionic knee-jerk reaction. If this petition were a drum corps show, this performance would not make finals for its mistakes in composition, transitions, and logic gaps. It is poorly designed.. It doesn't represent the people it says it is defending. it presumes itself to be a mouthpiece for everyone.

  3. This is dumb. You don't see anyone clamoring for DCI to stop hosting shows in other states with similar laws, making this whole argument and petition hypocritical. Georgia is contemplating the same bill, so where's the "Spirit of Atlanta should move out of the state" petition? I'm all for the whole DCI front office staff joining the live protest, or writing a letter signed by Dan urging defeat of the bill, but there's simply no way DCI moves out of Indy. It's an empty threat, so they shouldn't waste any effort in making it. This petition isn't about defeating the bill so much as it is about people feeling good about themselves for signing it. It's the same thing as those stupid Facebook "If this post gets 1000 likes, god will grant you a puppy" posts.

  8. Box 7 ministries' prayer groups are active in a number of corps. Pioneer builds time into the Sunday schedule for religious services for those who wish. Cadets, Santa Clara, and Star of Indiana all had religious chaplains at some point of their DCI days; often the Masses were open to those of other corps as well. Many corps observe a more less-frenzied Sunday schedule to allow members to renew and refresh, one of the aspects of a Sabbath observance. According to the Catholic priests at St. John's Church in Indianapolis and across the street from Lucas Oil by a block, their church is packed when BOA and DCI have shows. I doubt if there would be any scientifically accurate measure of religious observance during tour whether Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Mormon, Hindu or personal creed no matter what the metric. Yes, drum corps is no longer the days of CYO corps who brought everyone to Church. But because it's not the old way doesn't mean no practice is observed. Many MMs on tour seem to pack a Bible and/or devotional in their luggage. How often it may be used is usually a private, personal matter.

  9. Lucas Oil Stadium is owned by the State of Indiana. DCI has negotiated a favorable contract for itself to lease those facilities with the State of Indiana's approval. Considering the demographics of DCI are not a secret, it seems to me that a state wishing to enforce a culture of homophobia would deny any request for favorable lease terms. The very fact that Indiana is a hotbed of music activities, works hard to promote musical activities and events, and has attracted several nationally-recognized musical groups to locate there shows defacto proof that they are not acting on any, supposed, homophobic inclinations. Without proof that marching members, corps, or fans have experienced ANY negative affects of such laws or "religious beliefs" from ANY public or private organization or company, DCI should ignore the clamoring to take any stand on any grounds and, instead, do its duty to get the best financial deal it can for its member corps.

  16. We'll agree to disagree. Judges are very honed in on design. This turd was only beat by one corps all season until finals when an excellent Coats show edged them out of second. Maybe not your cup of tea, but design was hardly a turd.

  18. 1972...DCI's first Finals night. Warhawk Stadium, Whitewater, Wisconsin. The announcer was down to the final three corps when the tornado thundered its force. The winds drowned out the announcement of the Blue Stars in second place. The order was given for all corps to evacuate the field immediately, leaving equipment if necessary. A four foot high chain link fence surrounded the field with only two small gates at the corners of the backfield. The order also called for the evacuation of the 15,000 members of the audience who had already begun to flee the non-protected grand stand bleachers (that is, no sky boxes, domed roof, or any cover.) The nearest building at that time was 1/4 of a mile across open fields. Many, many of the audience and corps were from areas unfamiliar with tornadoes. This was the night that running was invented as DCI's principal training exercise. That no one was killed or seriously hurt stands as a miracle even to today. No one heard the Anaheim Kingsmen announced as the first winners. This was an age before cell phones, internet, no texting, and no protection to score sheets. That DCI survived its first championship is quite the highlight.

  22. Since we are in the lull period between seasons and leading up to another exciting LIVE season, I am offering my services again on a limited basis. I say limited since I do this voluntary only and I do have a full time job so please be patient. I only have capacity to work on a few projects. In another thread Eleran posted how it would be nice to have judging on show design. I agree. Anything to bring more involvement to the league then just caption crunching. There was a time we had some pretty active directors here. Show design is not my skill but I can assist graphically. If you are a new director and are in say need of corps logos I have done this work in the past. I have also built corps banners, show posters, and some uniform work on a template built by a previous OP. I have not updated this link in a long time but it does show some of my previous work for directors here. http://starorg.awardspace.com/starorg_creations.htm Here is also a uniform rendering (below) in this format I spoke about. This was a previous version done for the Polaris Regiment. If interested in assistance please PM me.

  23. And for more consistent thinking, 19 other states have similar laws on the books. Would DCI no longer hold contests in those states? Has there been documented cases of drum corps fans or participants not being served in any of these other states?

  24. I was in the crowd for both the finals performance and the results in 2008. In many ways (especially during the PR performance) it was amazing. In others, it got very ugly—excessively so. People booed BD extremely harshly. The crowd was basically taunting BD from the beginning, and then the roar of the crowd and BD's reaction to it were pretty unfortunate, honestly. I just felt like A LOT of those cheers came at the expense of BD, and not because PR had just won. That's probably an extremely unpopular opinion, but it's how I felt when I was there, and it's how I feel looking back on it. I know judges are "unbiased" and whatnot, but they clearly were swayed towards Phantom that year, probably almost entirely by the crowd. In an isolated setting without all of that hype and buildup, I'm not even sure if Phantom was the second best corps there. As far as highlights are concerned, that is certainly the most notable moment for me from an audience's perspective, personally, even if it isn't entirely positive. The biggest highlight I can remember in terms of almost universal popularity is SCV 09 during the Simple Gifts company front. #### was rocking that year.

  25. There are previous threads from other seasons giving exact locations such as Cadets at U. Pitt. at Johnstown; Cavaliers at Benedictine College, then Eastern Illinois; Carolina Crown at Garner-Webb; Bluecoats have the best facility which is a small college in Ohio, Denison in Granville. The challenge of Spring training is three-fold: learn the show, especially drill to be ready for first contest; meld the corps members as one unit; prepare the corps members to be ready to face anything on tour. Towards that third point, corps like the Cavaliers and Santa Clara will shift locations, Cadets will throw in some overnight parade gigs so that corps members switch from dorms to gyms to mimic the usual tour, and Blue Devils will alternate seating, 1/3 coach, 1/3 business class, 1/3 and admin in First Class. (Only kidding, ha, ha. Some BD homer will probably retort that they all go First Class.)

  26. I don't know if that would have even worked. I truly thought it was one of poorest designs by The Cadets ever. I honestly feel bad saying that because the performance level was incredible. But you can't polish a turd. You can perform it well enough to get 3rd, but that's all.

  27. If Indiana passes the "RELIGIOUS FREEDOM" law which would allow discrimination, DCI better plan to discuss moving Championships. A state that allows hate should not be rewarded. From what I have heard, there are several groups that are pushing for DCI to join other large convention groups in making a joint statement against the religious "freedom" bill. BRING THE CHAMPIONSHIP TO CALIFORNIA AGAIN!

  31. Evil twin alert. I've pretty much hated every uniform design they've worn. It's between them, the Blue Knights, and the Colts as my least favorite corps when it comes to uniforms. Can't think of a single one I like from throughout the years. Blechhh!!!

  34. Having missed out on that experience myself (I marched in '85 and '86) I can really appreciate that. I can't call it a regret since I wouldn't have marched anywhere else, but I am saddened that I never had that experience. I do feel pride though anytime I see them knowing that without our '86 group persevering through a very difficult year there very well may have not been a Crossmen anymore.

  35. Being on the field performing in Finals was the highlight for me. Outside of that I think about the crowd reaction at the end of Madison '97 Another highlight was the class shown by the members of BD towards the members of Crown when they won their first title in '13 (same could be said of BD and Bluecoats this past summer for each other as well)

  39. To be perfectly honest, I wasn't looking that "in-depth"...and I totally missed it at the time. Serves me right...I should have been more observant and/or cognizant. But as to the final product: I don't think it affected my judgement of the program one iota. I do, however, applaud your awareness. That is why you are a far more well-informed drum corps afficionado than I. And that is meant with all sincerity, with no intended sarcasm whatsoever.

  42. Taking a slightly different tack... Future finals night..."Old-Skool" ending...One of the "super" brass lines (Carolina, maybe?)...company front, stretched goal line to goal line at extreme backfield...slowly advancing to stands with: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yaxVYNGaUU (music begins about 0:27) My inner ear even imagines the song-appropriate ruffles and flourishes trading between the mellophones and inner trumpets throughout.... This would render all that have come before this as secondary in my book. At that point, I could safely die and go wherever I'm assigned to go.

  43. 97 scouts...they hit the big company front after the pirate fight. crowd stands up and goes crazy. drum major pulls out the pirate flag, they go more crazy. THEN he whips out that camera and the place just hits critical volume. that show just brought the frenzy out of people. 99 scouts, in Madison, was pretty nuts too. but 97 was berserk.
