  1. That is hardly the scene I think of when I think of that film! 😎

  2. My wife is combating Coronavirus by cleaning everything in the house with bleach and we have hand sanitizer and a bajillion other cleaning products to the point where we will kill ALL bacteria ...thus creating another problem with no natural immunities in our bodies. The good bacteria will all be killed off. Hope I make it to the summer.

  17. I don't remember a single issue with food allergies when in grade school. Most of us ate peanut butter sandwiches. I'm sure there were some food allergies but not to the level we hear about today. Then again, we were always outside in the mud and my own family had a variety of pets so we were probably exposed to a lot. As for cool air, one thing I've noticed more and more is kids wearing shorts in extremely cold weather. In fact at my last job there was a developer who must have been around 30 who only wore shorts - no matter what the temperature was. It would be -15 F and he'd be in shorts/boots walking through the blowing snow.

  18. I can often be heard at work complaining about how so many of my younger folks in classes never had to play outside when they were kids. They're literally allergic to EVERYTHING including natural sunlight and cool air.

  20. My attempt at a review of the Cavalier's 2019 show: Absolutely loved this production. One of my favorites of the 2019 season. I thought the uniforms, props and naration fit the "wrong side of the tracks/gangs of New York" (or perhaps "gangs of Chicago," in this case) theme very well, as did the musical selections. Some of the smoothest and best ensemble playing by the horn line of any corps last year. I really don't know anything about percussion, but the Cavalier's front ensemble always blows me away... so exiting to listen to and especially to watch. "Road to Perdition" is everything I love in a ballad. It was beautiful, haunting and moving. And those soaring sustained chords at the end induce chills in me every time. I found the "There is only one guarantee--none of us will see heaven" narration to be poignant and sobering. There are people on this planet that feel that marginalized and hopeless. We can't forget them. The frenetic firing off of the rifles in all directions at the end of the closer, with the battery pounding out the staccato sound of a train passing, was a perfect climax to the anger, frustration and cries for help that came before. And after the big collapse to the ground of all the corp members at the end did you notice the lone guard member walking along the train trestle, looking at his hands, after having just pushed another guard member of the top to his death? He can't believe what's he done, how his destiny has unfolded, how his life has "slipped of the track." To my mind this was everything a drum corps show should be...pure entertainment. Kudos to the members and their staff for this amazing production.

  22. Are busses cleaned? Yes. enough? hard to say or do, Hospitals are cleaned to the highest degree yet they themselves will tell you a hospital is a Petrie dish . Cram humans literally into a sardine can going down the road and it doesn't take much going from place to place to create an ripe environment.

  23. I remember being asked to take the test to the office to be copied. YES!!!!! Edit: TIL - it was a mix of methanol and isopropanol. Also, it was "spirit duplicator" or "ditto machine". Mimeograph was a competing process that used a forced wax stencil.

  26. Most expert commentary I've seen urges people not to buy masks (unless you're sick and need to be in public), and there have been some concerns expressed about there being a shortage of masks for health care professionals. They say that masks are far less useful than washing hands, keeping hands away from faces, not shaking hands, and avoiding those who are sick (and having sick people stay home). That's on the individual level. Meanwhile, almost a month ago, Scott Gottlieb, who had been the FDA commissioner from May 2017 through April 2019 (i.e., entirely under the current administration, lest anyone again try to spin this as a political argument), co-wrote this editorial in the Wall Street Journal urging more official action here in the U.S.: "It's time to start testing patients with unexplained pneumonia, even if they haven't traveled to China," because Gottlieb thought, correctly it seems, that coronavirus was already here. The shark has been swimming in our waters for several weeks now. But if you close the beaches, it will be bad for business. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Some potentially good news I saw today: a new tentative estimate suggests that the mortality rate of coronavirus is about 0.7%, which is still seven times higher than for the seasonal flu but less than half of what had previously been estimated.

  27. It's actually worked to my advantage at home though. Britt stays out of the shop because of all the machinery and such. Nothing like metal lathes and CNC machines spinning very fast to scare the bejesus out of you. Plus, most exotic woods are poisonous by nature (the dust) so anytime I'm cutting or turning anything it's pretty much a millennial "no fly zone."

  34. Thanks for all that detail. I think the Mid-West corps were far more hardware/ tech savvy than we Easterners. The preferred form of cheating here was overage marching. Some corps were notorious. At my very first show with the Queensmen, I was "protested" right on the starting line by the management of a rather prominent All-Girl unit because I looked like someone they suspected. The chief judge asked to see my driver's license. I was 15, not old enough to have one.

  35. Yes hopefully. You are right about that they don't think they are immune to the things you say BUT what I meant was also politics, community pitfalls as well as community development. which also ties into the things you mentioned. It being almost March with 2 months from move in's, there for sure has to be precautions by management and go beyond what we are being told ( can't always trust for sure, sadly ) . Not panic for sure BUT awareness for all

  36. It is hard to say - in general genetic predisposition to a given disease certainly exists, but that can take some time to work out. We had an expression when I was in grad school in Louisiana -'when you are up to your a** in alligators, it is hard to remember that your goal was to drain the swamp'. The health officials are more concerned right now with treating current cases, looking for new cases, and doing their best to prevent further transmission. I hope someone is collecting a whole bunch of data on the current cases, so at some point we have a big data set to look at to determine what really happened, why it happened, & what can we do better next time (& I suspect they are collecting this data). ps - you might enjoy this video as well

  37. Remember that being only roughly, what...400 miles apart, there are a lot of ties across Ireland and Scotland. They both share a form of Gaelic (though they're different dialects entirely at this point,) and family / district tartans are still prevalent in both places. Believe it or not, there's even a tartan pattern for Scottish and Irish folks who have German ancestry (although I don't think it's official if I remember correctly.) Oh they're both cold and rainy...

  39. I have a solution for everyone who wants to avoid Corona Virus and for kids marching in drum corps, it could help with dues and spending money for the summer. If you walk into a CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, or other chain pharmacy, chances are you will see a help wanted sign. Apply and accept the job, even if it’s part time. My father was a pharmacist and owned his own store. As early as I can remember, I waited on customers who coughed, sneezed, wiped their runny nose then handed me their money. Then there was cleaning up after a kid vomited and cleaned up after other unpleasantries I’ll leave to your imagination. I rarely catch anything worse than a slight cold. I need to watch my blood pressure and heart rate, but that’s family history, not a contagious illness. Working in a drug store builds up your immunity for a lifetime. 👨‍⚕️ .🤧

  45. Yes. This is how it is now. Like many, I do not think this is a good thing. But I still support drum corps in general. Far too much emphasis on soft skills as opposed to hard skills. Hard skills are basically color guard, M & M, field drums, and brass. All include technical and performance. Pit percussion fits both hard and soft skills in my opinion, and are very important. The rest? - soft skills. ( props, amplification, general effect, and what is described as "show design") -- The hard skills are foundational and should comprise the significant majority of scoring outcomes. Everything else is along for the ride. Bottom line - we are forgetting about actually marching as a valuable and judged part of drum corps. And difficult marching and playing together? Not even a judged factor anymore, objectively. Stand play, move, stand play move. No reward for risk. All good.
