  1. I was feeling a little angry today and wanting to give a big F U to the C virus. So I blasted ‘96 PR. It was just what my defiant heart needed. If you need a little pick me up today, go feel the power of that show.

  2. Wonder how the Indy Chamber of Commerce will feel about DCI hosting future events? Their sponsored hotels are issuing refunds. airlines and other events canceled like the Big 10 - all made refunds. DCI claims they're major league - REALLY! The XFL, MLB, MLS issued refunds. Ticketmaster issued refunds for cancelled events. DCI and the corps all know touring drum corps will take a while to fit back into the new norm, if at all. IMO it would have been nice to at least had the option for a complete refund. Instead DCI screwed over those loyal fans who are out of work and in dire need of any money they can get during this pandemic. In times like this we get to see people for who they really are - out for themselves.

  5. If you’re working from home, have your WiFi locked down. We have always had it protected because Jim works from home but I have seen cars phishing in my neighborhood. I laughed at Jim in January when two Vogmasks were delivered to our house. He bought them right after the first case was diagnosed in Washington state. I’m not laughing so much now. 😳

  6. 2005 Corpsvets. We did Winston Salem the last week of July and then packed up the uniforms into the trailer where they stayed until Kingston NY and then back in the trailer until St. Cloud Florida. Now, these things we're already...moist...from Winston Salem. By the time we got down to Florida they had been marinating in that uni trailer in the Atlanta summer heat for basically a month and a half. When I went to go get my top half, I could literally taste the funk in the air. It was about a bazillion degrees and then just as we went on, it started pouring that funky smelling Florida rain. I'm pretty sure that even after marching DCI, THAT specific day is when my immune system got bumped up to hyper active. That's why I can still teach in a class full of sick people. Oh....and the banana spiders were ridiculous.

  7. The other thing about the old-style cadet uniform is that we would naturally sweat in them. The uniforms would be put away while still……moist and packed tightly together on the truck. They never really dried out in the high humidity places and it would cause mold patterns to grow on the inside around the back of the shoulders. We would do Rorschach tests and compare our mold patterns. “Look, mine looks like dragon”, “Hey, mine looks like South America”! It was so gross.

  8. Glad you’re VERY happy! Unless you’re unemployed at the moment and one of the loyal fans who could use the money for their family, please try to not make it all about you. Thanks again for your wonderful understanding.

  9. I hope you enjoyed the 89 Thread. 1990 was an amazing year for DCI. Lots of change and innovation. If I'm not mistaken, this was the first year for three-valve bugles in the soprano line. Highlights of the year for me include: Cadets and their haunting emotional presentation of 'Somewhere...' Star of Indiana... 'Praise ye!' (the Gods of brass!) BD changing their game and rocking (although their Pinball Wizard swung hard.) That baritone line of SCV. Monsters. When I think of a DCI bari/euph line, that's what I think of. Crossmen big step up with a fresh, coherent, balanced show - and that drumline... Madison, 'Remembrance' Dutch Boy, the first Canadian corps in finals. And so much more! First place didn't seem especially controversial. Cadets were a strong corps across all captions. I give you 1990!

  10. Oh, those contests were the big ones, but between them, most corps competed in their region because there were so many units. When corps started folding in the late 60's and once DCI started, the corps became larger and started travelling for weeks at a time.

  14. Used a work virtual network when doing telework. Always tell when weather was bad and people were home as got dicey at times. No idea what it is like now. When dad passed I took possession of his old “snot rags”. Yeah blue collar family and didn’t bother with less than totally descriptive or pretty words. 19 inches square and when folded in a triangle can be tied in back and cover everything below the eyes. Plus tuck in bottom under shirt neck. Ugly as sin but not taking up medical resources. Hey weaklefthander think they came from Ollie’s.

  17. The biggest positive Intake from this period, it’s ability to become a learning experience. That’s encouraging! Within the topic of digital intrusions into our homes, we MUST understand ‘sinister’ use of technology. Much of what comes unwanted to your device is deceitful. I have learned it’s now possible to have your OWN NAME show-up as the person calling. It is possible to get an email indicating YOUR NAME as the original sender! So . . . Let it be known, I didn’t send you that link to Asian women wanting to marry. I didn’t send you a message in support of more electronics in drum corps. Geez, maybe it’s time to accept the possibility . .. . It ain’t even me sending this post !

  19. IMO DCI became a caricature of what it once was. So if it’s blown up and started anew, that’s a great thing as far as I’m concerned.

  21. Dutch was pretty hot that year though. Things I remember extremely well about that year: Spirit making finals after a tough season 😊 Magic of Orlando debuts 😊 No more Suncoast Sound 😞 Star with Belshazzar's starts to REALLY show what's about to happen to DCI. Not many shows wowed me that year, but this one really defined things for me. I started out with a "this isn't drum corps" attitude and ended the season with "this is the future of drum corps." PR and BD tie?!?!?! Whattt????? Cadets shock me by staying Cadets of Bergen County. For some reason, I thought they were going to pull a Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship/The Jefferson's/Airplane (not the movie....or maybe the movie...I lost count.) Dutch Boy marches with Premier Resonator drum heads which are possibly the worst head since Ludwig Silver Dot High Torques and make them sound actually half way decent. They're like playing on a Hefty trashbag...only Hefty bags last longer under high torque. I start college at UA thinking I'm the hottest thing since sliced bread because I had marched in DCI only to find out that so had EVERYONE ELSE and they had better chops than me 😂

  22. More regional and the CA corps headed Eastward for some competition. First time I saw SCV was at the 71 Danny Thomas Invitational in MA. As for your question, as you may have read, there were hundreds of corps. The season started a month or so earlier than DCI. With just about every mm from within 50 miles of a corps/drill team/bands HQ, the final contests were into September if not October. One 1960 era bread truck carried all the instruments and uniforms. Most top corps had around 80 mm.

  25. First stadium you performed in: Calder Stadium - Menasha, WI. 1989 Last stadium you performed in: Rich Stadium (old Buffalo Bills Stadium) Buffalo, NY. 1990 (But did the Madison Alumni Corps performance at Camp Randall Stadium in August of 2006) Best stadium you performed in: Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City MO. August 1989 Worst stadium you performed in: Manning Bowl, Lynn MA. July 1990. It was a baseball stadium...you had to march over the pitcher’s mound, and the entire crowd was off to your left and ridiculously far away!

  26. Think your comments are spot on, Tim. There's a very good possibility that some of the money is already spent, maybe in advance of this season, maybe to cover losses from a previous season. Contractors do this all the time, collect money from one project to pay expenses from another. Starting to smell a lawsuit here.

  30. From what I gleaned from the DCI ticket options, one gets a credit towards the 2021 premier events, not necessarily the same tickets. I prefer that, since I'll be able to get better tickets next year, perhaps.😉

  31. My first thought was Dutch Boy in finals but they weren’t the first Canadian corps to make it.

  32. Is it a question of DCI not wanting to give refunds, or is it unable to give refunds? In theory, all ticket sale money should be in a separate account and should not have been touched yet, except for expenses directly involved with the show. I would wonder if that is the case.

  40. So, I can virtually name those guys you were speaking with in 1990. Eric G was the DM. Jimmy C was the contra section leader, and those two "Old School" baris were most likely the Dorchester/Milton boys...Chris H and Matt R. For the record, Jimmy C is now the President of the Inspire BOD and Chris H is none other than Christopher Holland, Exec Director of the Boston Crusaders. Hmm.....interesting...no?

  41. I marched Freelancers in 1989... we had a chip on our shoulder that season, and were a veteran corps having only lost a handful of age outs from the previous year. The 1989 corps had practically grown up together for the two previous seasons, and after going back and forth with Hutch in 1988 we were battle-tested. '88 was a fun year and we had exceeded expectations, but still felt a little dissed after placing 15th. '89 was much more focused. We started the season strong, but made some major changes after first tour, which included moving pieces from the front of the show to the back half the show. The hornline was on fire towards the end of the season, at one point beating Cadets. Our finals show was Meh... I think we were all exhausted and just happy to have reached our goal which was making it to Saturday night. But I still think our best show of the year was Semifinals. Just so much #### energy, we left everything on the field that night, and the crowd was really into it. I wish I could find a copy of that semifinals show.

  42. Every night, Conquest, huge response. I had an incredible convo with the DM, contra section leader, and a couple of old-skool baritones in the Allentown lot in 1990 the about the 1986 Malden parade. They were awesome guys, and bad@sses in the best sense of the word.

  43. 1989 was one of my favorite seasons. I was teaching and on the road with BAC that summer. I think they came in 17th...not bad for only 40 horns! And, if my memory serves me (it WAS over 30 years ago after all), I have the distinct recollection that Boston was on late at night in semis, wedged right between PR and BD. I know this sounds preposterous, but I am 99% sure that's when we went on. Anyway, the corps was very tight and extremely clean that summer, with a very visceral vintage Boston show. It was a pleasure to teach them!

  44. It wasn't until the late 90's that I, for the first time, heard the ballad the way it was supposed to be played. After all of these years, hearing it correct sounds wrong! Mike

  46. In their simple opinion, it seems the non-profit nature of the drum corps plus the "World Class" instruction from many of the same people writing and teaching at their high schools would be an enforceable educational product.

  47. Good luck John. Is essential set by Disney or the state? Have extended family doing essential jobs (PA decides what’s essential) such as manage gun department of sporting goods company and making dog food for Purina. One is construction worker and laid off because he was working on a school renovation. If he would have been on the crew building a new hospital he’d still be working.
