  1. That's a bull#### answer. The space used by stored video on the FN isn't anywhere near that big, especially with the compression they use. They aren't storing RAW video for online use (that's the space hog). When you factor in the cost of WGI's subscription, the answer given becomes even more farcical. The "streaming video takes up so much space" answer is so stupid it's laughable.

  2. Franz Biebl's Ave Maria is better than PR's. No drum corps has ever done Mahler better than Mahler. But I get your point coffeeman.

  3. SCV 1988 & 1989 = better than sitting the entirety of "Phantom of the Opera." I saw SCV long before I saw the musical, and I really think SCV nailed the best of the music while leaving out the uninteresting stuff. I really like musicals, so it's not just that (on the flip side, I think there is a plethora of great music SCV never touched from their 91 "Miss Saigon" show). I guess also, I had heard Garfield 1984 many, many times before seeing or hearing the actually Broadway or film soundtrack to "West Side Story" and I was taken aback that the song "America" didn't break into a swing section.

  4. " "exposure to error" was a key phrase..." This was a radical concept when it was introduced, and it required some paradigm shifting to take hold. That process took years and is still controversial at times though it's now the standard way of evaluating all competitive groups, from drum quartets to Olympic gymnasts. The "how" and "what" are both considered. To this day, the best advice I ever got about this concept came from the legendary music judge and educator, Dr. Bernard Baggs. In a training for new judges, I had asked how to balance these elements fairly. In that Solomon-like and fatherly tone of his he replied, "Frank, keep in mind that anyone can play difficult music badly. There's not much merit in that."

  6. All of them. ANY corps that folds = one less opportunity for members to perform in a drum corps, one less corps for crowd to enjoy, one less teaching or designing opportunity for an age-out.

  7. What 12 corps regardless of where they might end up have intrigued you with their show ideas/concept? My most excited to see corps are: 1) Crown- cant wait to see what they'll bring following a title 2) Scouts- Love Don Ellis, intrigued by the music although disappointed in the trombone usage 3) Blue Knights- Incredible concept- Incredible music- could be a special year 4) Boston- No one ever thought to do animal farm because its complex... I'm beyond intrigued to see them with all the great staff adds 5) Cavies- After mid top 12 finishes, will this be their show and year to come back to the top 6? 6) SCV- Scherezade probably my favorite music how will they change it from previous concept? 7) Troopers- So close to finals, this show seems to have teeth, enough bite? We'll see 8) Phantom- Swan Lake is gorgeous but will this be in memorable like the past season? 9) Bluecoats- Seems like it could be either really great or completely forgettable. 10) BD- I like the music but Ill hold my thoughts until I see it 11) Colts- Awesome Staff+ great concept equals? Moving up and lots if enjoyment 12) Cadets- I want to see them but I've loved the past 3 seasons and think maybe this could be a let down year? We'll see

  8. The Cadets use of props in 2013 seemed to me to be mostly a lot of lugging of multiple big box stuff onto the field all summer long, for such little payoff in artistic value, or even for audience value. But that was last year and this is this year, so who knows... maybe I'll give them their props for their props in 2014.

  9. Thanks, was alright I guess. Haha, anyways here's my reasoning behind who I'm excited about. Just my opinions people, take them with a grain of salt! 1) Blue Stars - They're my favorite corps, of course I'm excited about them the most! But in all seriousness, I may or may not have some connections here.......and I'm very very excited about what I'm hearing. Last year was a solid show, I feel like it ironed out their weaknesses from 2012, and put them in a solid direction. They could have fallen further last year, but fought back in with a very strong 10th - 12th caliber show. That said, I felt like the show was VERY lacking emotionally and didn't have a lot woven into it that really connected it and gave it that flow that so many of the top groups have. Solid show, but nothing too memorable for me. That said, 2013 has the emotional potential and memorable elements that I think 2013 was seriously lacking in. I think it's a theme that people will be able to connect to, and it's going to be done in a really unique and cool way, don't think 2011 Blue Devils here, it's nothing like that. The second year with this staff will do wonders I think, if you look at the top corps, staff consistency is part of the formula, and they have it this year. Very excited about this corps, I see them 8th - 11th, falling out of finals not likely. I think they had their little wake up call in 2012 (which is still one of my favorite shows from 2012), and have rebounded and are only looking forward to prove themselves. And it's their 50th anniversary, there's another little motivational boost! I think they have huge momentum coming into this season. Also that Pulse-esque drumline and front ensemble. MMMM! They are smoking and full of Bad ### attitude that I just can't get enough of. 2) Carolina Crown - I'm very excited to see how they come off their first championship. No telling what could happen. I think they're moving forward with worked last year, fixing their weakness's and just going for it this year. Will it be too much? Who knows, but I'd rather have too much than too little and I think this show is really going to blow our minds. Without giving anything away, they are really trying some out of this world stuff this year that is REALLY cool. The big elephant in the room was the percussion section last year, which I think they are paying HUGE attention to thus far, and I'm thinking that based on a few videos and just how they are promoting them on their Facebook and in their videos. I think more than anything, they are just trying to make them a more integral part of the program this year. Brass is amazing, guard could challenge BD's 7 year reign, and I'm pretty sure percussion will be stronger. Source music is INCREDIBLE. Can't wait! I see them 1st - 3rd. 3) Bluecoats - The fact that none of this music has been used on the drum corps field excites me greatly. I think it's going to be modern era drum corps at it's absolute best. There are all sorts of elements in these pieces that can take what DCI has legalized and use them in the absolute best of ways. I think Bluecoats have most tastefully used Synth, ect. and I'm excited to see what they do here. The theme is vague enough that I'm not entirely sure what direction they're going to take us, which makes me very excited. I think being tied with a ball and chain to a VERY descriptive show title isn't good for the imagination and possibilities of a show. One word, that opens a HUGE door. They've done very well with one word show themes. Connexus, Criminal, Metropolis, ect. The way they arrange and perform is just phenomenal, they're always my favorite corps to listen to. Hymn of Axciom = my prediction for ballad of the year.Bluecoats hurdle has been visual. I have a good feeling considering the changes they've made over the off season. I'm sure they'll pay off in some way, if it does and they improve in coming years, I think 2010 will no longer be their best show ever and they'll win by 2018. Hoping it pays off, want them to be my favorite to watch AND listen to. I see them anywhere from 3rd to 8th. 4) Cavaliers - I think the sooner we get over the fact that Michael Gaines is gone and the 2000 - 2011 Cavaliers are gone for good, the sooner we will enjoy them more. I LOVED last years show, I thought it was miles and kilometers, and light years better than 2012. Now the biggest issue I had was Brass. And considering who they got a hold of this year, I think that problem is out of the window. Percussion was still solid, guard great, and I think visual design was pretty good last year. Brass is taken care of, so I think they'll be off running a little quicker this year and have a chance at the top 6. Theme, like Bluecoats, leaves lots of room for interpretation, so I'm excited to see what "Immortal" is all about. Source music is some of my favorite. Love the Saint Saens, the Purcell has potential to be a GORGEOUS ballad, and don't even get me started on "A Walk on the Water". There are elements from that piece that I can see woven throughout the show, but the last 4 minutes are just glorious, loud, and intense majestic POWER. If that's not in the finale, I'd be shocked. That has the potential to be one of my favorite charts of the year, very excited here. I think a new Cavaliers are about to be reborn, I haven't been this excited about a Cavaliers show since I started following the activity. I see them 5th - 9th. 5) Blue Devils - After seeing the video, I'm hugely excited that it seems to be a little more accessible. Maybe after two shows that really push the viewer to look at drum corps with a little........different of a perspective, they feel like it's time to be the good ole in your face jazzy BD we all know and love. I think on the surface, it'll be a really fun movie set show that most people will get, but with some of those recent Blue Devils touches for those of us that don't mind digging just a little deeper to find out what they're REALLY trying to portray. If they can strike that balance perfectly, they could end up being my favorite corps this season. Based on the video, seems a lot more melodic and with a lot more dot type drill. This theme fits them like a beautiful curvaceous T, so I think they'll be a huge, but very enjoyable, force this year. I see them anywhere from 1st to 3rd. 6) Phantom Regiment - I get the "it's too similar to what they've done the last 3 years blah blah" argument, but Tchaikovsky and Regiment? Come on, it's a match made in heaven! Uniforms aside......I LOVE the source music. As stated on DCP, Earnhart, Kuhn, and Hill's work at LD Bell in the mid 2000s is my all time favorite for a high school group, so I can't WAIT to see what they put out for us on the drum corps field, especially considering they've handled some of this music in an amazingly intense and awesome way before. Speaking of Kuhn, hoping he pays off in percussion land for them, like Crown, they need some attention this year so they don't drag the corps down. He's got the credentials, hope he pays off! I'm sure he'll do a fantastic job. I see them 5th to 9th. 7) Spirit of Atlanta - I think they're a dark horse for the top 10. Am I crazy? JW Koester knows how to turn a corps around ala Vanguard 1996 - 2004, so he knows how to come in and clean shop. New look, slightly less specific show theme, and some new staff make for them to be able to move in a brand new direction. Love the theme, and although we don't know much of any of the source music, I think this is going to be a straightforward, what the south is about to Spirit show, and I love those kinds of shows. Very excited to see what they do here. I see them 10th - 15th. 8) Pacific Crest - First, was really cool that they got the exposure by getting to be on the quarterfinals cine cast. I LOVE the direction they've taken the past couple years. Can I just say, they sound PHENOMENAL! Love listening to their last two shows "The Spectrum" and "Transfixed". Brass is phenomenal, percussion was one of my favorite last year, and guard is taking a big leap in the right direction as of last year. Staff additions are very promising, they seem to be bringing in some big names. They've made steady and consistent progress over the past few years, and I think that'll continue regardless of placement. I think these guys are the next big thing. If they continue the progress, finals by 2020? I see them 13th - 19th, just a SUPER competitive area currently. 9) Boston Crusaders - As with PC, I think they're making staff and organizational moves to really move forward as a corps and as a performing arts organization. I think the show last year was a step up in complexity and difficulty, and that they pulled it off well. It wouldn't surprise me to see this one bumped up another notch. VERY intrigued to see how they present "Animal Farm" as a drum corps show! Going to be very dark I have a feeling, just like I like it. Not too much to go off of, just a gut feeling. All the sections are strong, especially guard who's been phenomenal the past two seasons. I see them 5th - 10th. As with the non finalists really competitive, and I'm not too sure honestly. 10) Santa Clara Vanguard - I feel like we shouldn't even compare this to 2004 first of all. Completely different staff and era of drum corps, and I think it will just let us enjoy the show more. This staff knows their #### too. Shaw, Renick, and Weber behind the design, how is that NOT gonna be good?! I think this show will be a lot like this year, a fan favorite and in the top 5. How high they go all depends on difficulty to me, it could win or be a fun fan favorite 5th. Who knows, just depends on what the other top corps bring to the table. We'll see. All sections pretty strong, not real weaknesses last year to me. I see them 3rd to 6th. 11) Madison Scouts - I'll be brief, some hot jazz and Madison? How can that NOT be good? If they kick up the difficulty a notch visually I think they could move into the 6th pack, if not I think they'll stay where they've been. Love what Bedis has done percussively with them. Will be a blast of a show wherever they place. I see them 6th - 11th. 12) The Academy - Yes, last year was a bit of a stumble, but that was after 4 VERY strong non finalist shows. I hope they rebound, because this show sounds like it could be a really fun one with them. "What a Wonderful World" could be a hugely impressive tune for them, the theme has lots of area for interpretation and sounds fitting for them. They've always been my favorite non finalist corps, I love their intensity and musical arranging, always a blast to watch perform, even last year. Regardless of the show, they looked like they were having a blast, and that's what it's all about right? Just back off the cheese-wiz just a tad and this could be a very enjoyable show. I see them 14th - 21st. Honorable Mention) Oregon Crusaders - Follwing PC, these guys are the next......next big thing. They've made steady and consistent progress in show design and performance all the way from back in 2009 to this past year, that's 5 years of consistent improvement. Slowly but surely, they are coming to be in the fight for finals. There's something about their musical arranging that's super refreshing to me, modern and old school corps mixed perhaps? Who knows. I love these guys, their shows are always very enjoyable to me, and they have field presence that just grabs me. Fantastic drumline last year as well, keep it up guys. You're on my radar. I see them 15th - 20th. Open Class HYPE!) 7th Regiment - My favorite Open Class corps by far. Very new age and fun, and making consistent progress year in year out, excited to see what they do with Nevsky on the field! Haven't not enjoyed one of their shows.

Then again by now it's all obsolete, just like my 30+ plus year old Computer Science degree. Good thing is I re-invented myself a few times since, bad thing is never got involved in PC or networking. Being Unix and Oracle savvy doesn't help worth a #### for this....

  16. I don't officially speak for the corps, but as far as I know the results of our DCA Evaluation are still pending. Can't say much more about that Regardless of the outcome though, we will be performing our full field show at all three DCA Central shows in August (Racine, Mendota Heights, St Peter), as well as the DCI show in Eden Prairie MN in July. We are not making the trip to finals for our first year back. Hope that clears things up a bit! Edited to add shameless plug- follow our Facebook page for more updates!

  17. It's unlikely that you'll have an HDMI port on a laptop unless it's new and relatively high-end. Apple MacBook Pro's have Mini-DisplayPorts and they work very well if you have 'em. Apple users can also stream via AirPlay if they have an AppleTV in their set-up. One possible solution for you would be to use ChromeCast. It's a cheap and easy way to get video to your TV from any computer.

  19. The DCI mailing list has more than 50,000 subscribers. The Fan Network has ~10,000 subscribers. That's at least 40,000 fans that are interested in drum corps that don't care about watching shows multiple times. My opinion - the hardcore fan is a super minority. And while shows should absolutely contain deep content that multiple viewings will reveal, if you can't get the basic version on first viewing, it's either designed or performed poorly. Mike

  20. oh my god keep anything beyond finals week for a season would be such a space hog! I talked to someone with WGI and asked about being able to keep up regionals once to see people that didn't go to Dayton, and they said if they tried to keep stuff other than finals week, the amount of space used and the cost would make prices out of this world.

  21. IDK, I disagree with at that. At least in the sense that there is nothing wrong, IMO, with a show "demanding" that you become knowledgeable about its subject matter, references, etc. As a consumer, I don't want to waste my money & time on disposal, "one-and-done" consumption. I want to be challenged, engaged, etc. in more than just "wow that brass line plays loud in a straight line!" I get that other people want other engagement, and that's fine too: I think there are plenty of different show design styles in the drum corps activity for ALL of us to get our fix. I do think it's wrong to automatically say corps should not engage their fans in such a way as to encourage fans to do additional research into the show topic.

  22. * they look cool in advertisements and other promotional materials * the members & staff see it daily, so why not get something visually interesting * judges on the field will see them, thus adding to the 'home' effect * why not? A wrap finish is generally not super difficult or expensive to do so you might as well do something cool instead of something boring like a plain blue drum

  28. This topic is a running joke in our home. She says "how do you know this tune?" oh, ______ corps played it. "Did you know the original version before?" most times, yes. some times no. when it is yes, I tend to appreciate the Corps arrangement even more. however, I view it as as a completely independent work suited for the activity, so I try to "turn off" my comparison button. Sort of like when I hear compositions based on a folk/hymn tune etc. i.e. Beethoven's Ode to Joy......Timothy Mahr's Fantasia in G.......Cavaliers 1999

  35. "...those two HOF'ers still had sweet gas in the tank at the end of the show." Well, maybe Steve had some petrol, but I was usually on fumes by then. But all of us here who ever marched finals in a major show know the adrenelin was pumping so hard it didn't matter if you were half dead. You just kept going. It's no different for today's performers, I'm certain, and they'll be telling their stories 40 years from now. It's interesting, too, that '68 was the closest the Brigadiers and Sunrisers ever got to the DCA title in the decade of the '60s, though they both scored a few later on. No one would have complained if either of them had won in '68, either. There was a good deal of parity in DCA in those days, moreso than now, though that will probably change over time.

  36. To address your two points: the sound and quality that are coming out of the not 80 member brass line is completely amazing. As for the cadet color guard, this is by far the strongest guard they've fielded in a few years. I will put you at the top of the list of being pleasantly surprised with their announced program once you see them. I've seen and heard it and it's good! Irving Fan of the Arts

  38. 2006 Cadets. While obviously weird, and it didn't do well competitively, I think it would better fit with the themes that we're seeing out of Crown and BD these days. I think it was just a show ahead of it's time. Also I think getting the chance to re-do it would do well with where the Cadets have gone recently.

  39. Absolutely none. Any previous show a corps has done I can revisit on DVD/Blu-ray or FN. I want to see new ideas, I want to hear/learn new music, etc. I don't want to see a rehash of an old show, even if it's a show I really like. That doesn't mean I'll write it off immediately (ala SCV 2014), but it's not what I want a corps to do.

  42. some of this might help Michael Boo Recaps & some mid=season big show scoring 2013 Blue Stars ranged from 9th in Visual Proficiency to 14th in Musical Analysis. Color Guard and Percussion was 10th, Brass 13th and both Effect captions and Visual Analysis finished 12th . [DCI Southeastern] Blue Stars taking the field to set up for "Voodoo: I Put a Spell on You." It's about a lady who discovers the man she loves is attracted to another, and goes to unusual methods of getting him back. 2012 Crossmen added 2.10 to its score in Atlanta and placed in the top 12 in four captions, up from two last weekend. Visual Analysis and Color Guard took 11th, the former tying with Spirit of Atlanta. Visual Proficiency and Music Analysis placed 12th. Both Effect captions and Brass finished 13th and Percussion 14th. [DCI Eastern] Crossmen’s show is titled, “Fragile.” Selections include “Earth Song” by Michael Jackson, “Wailers” by Bobby McFerrin, “PD7” by Anoushka Shanker, “Here Comes the Flood” by Peter Gabriel and “Finding and Believing” by Pat Metheny. 2011 Spirit of Atlanta took 12th in all three Visual captions and Brass, 13th in Music Ensemble, 15th in both GE captions and 16th in Percussion, 0.5 down to Troopers. [DCI Minnesota] How good was it to hear Brandt announce Spirit of Atlanta in tonight's DCI finals' lineup. This is the first time Spirit of Atlanta has made the DCI finals since 1990. Of course, they made it five times as Spirit of Jacksonville State University. "ATL Confidential: A Tribute to Film Noir." There are five main things all Film Noir based on; a femme fatale, a hero (often a detective), a chase of some sort, a nightclub, and it always ends with a question mark, often not resolved. The films don’t always go the way we want them to go. Show ends with lots of angst and anger as the films do. The corps did a magnificent job of bringing all these elements to life. 2010 Glassmen with Percussion in 9th and Brass in 14th. Other than that Brass placement and 13th in Visual Performance, all other captions were 11th or 12th [DCI Semis] Hawk said the corps’ program was designed to sound better within the booming walls of the stadium. “[The Prayer Cycle] is a very different show for us conceptually. Orchestration-wise, I think it’s a thinner, more feature-esque opener because of Lucas Oil,” Hawk said. “So I think the show is better designed around the stadium, looking toward Finals 2009 Troopers Judging by the enthusiastic reception the corps received just by walking out on the field, a lot of fans were hoping to witness history today by seeing the Troopers break into the top 12 for the first time since 1986. The corps’ 2009 production “Western Side Story” is charming in how it melds together music we would expect from the more traditional element of the corps with melodies as diverse as “Cave” and “West Side Story.” Part of the pleasing nature of the combination is in the surprise at how everything blends so naturally. And after the beauty of “One Hand, One Heart,” the clarion trumpet fanfare seemed to rip apart that heart to the loud approval of the audience. 2008 Madison “La Noche de la Iguana” plays off the corps’ success with Latin music in past years. This is music one might hear wafting out of a Latin nightclub at night while waiting for a rendezvous with a secret agent. While it plays with subtleties, the fire and intense audacity of this show reminds us of the searing hot Madison corps of the past … and likely the future as well. 2007 Spirit of JSU “Genesis” peeks at the corps’ rebirth as it faces the future with a new style and altered identity that is fresh and updated, as exemplified by the clean look of the new uniforms that are futuristic while harkening back to the delta design of the corps’ birth. Divided into the segments, “Creation,” “Controversy” and “Conflict,” the show passes through the driving Oriental sensitivity of Jun Nagao’s “Fluttering Maple Leaves,” into the evocative strains of Imogen Heap’s murmuring “Hide and Seek” and smashing into the valiant soaring disposition of David Gillingham’s “New Century Dawn,” speaking to the genesis of a new day and entertaining corps productions yet to come. 2006 Spirit of JSU has maintained a healthy spread of almost two points over Colts heading into the all-important cut-off for Saturday’s competition. 2006 production entitled, “Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue.” “Old Man River.” “That Old Black Magic.” Music from the soundtrack of “The Notebook” “The Waltz of the Mushroom Hunters.” “Blues in the Night,” and Frank Ticheli’s wind score of “Blue Shades. 2005 Spirit of JSU The Spirit of Broadway Give My Regards to Broadway (from Yankee Doodle Dandy) New York, New York (from On the Town) On Broadway, They’re Playing Our Song , Entre Act (from Sweeney Todd) Not While I’m Around (from Sweeney Todd) Pie Jesu (from Requiem) Luck Be A Lady (from Guys and Dolls) No One Mourns the Wicked (from Wicked) Defying Gravity (from Wicked) 2004 Glassmen Show was called Vice of One.
