  1. Don't even care what anyone else is playing. This is officially my favorite show of 2017.

  2. I think the "selections from past years" on the concert ad probably refers to the fact that they will play additional music from past years that is not from the actual 2017 production.

  3. Not me. I like it when they push forward and do new things. Hopefully we will know soon what the show is.

  6. So this is a new one. Phantoms show "Phantasm" gets announced, not by the corps, but via Rockford's community calendar. Check out the Phantom 17 thread. This is what happens when nobody plans for this stuff in advance. Mike

  7. Gosh, '91 was so much better than it placed. PR&F was fantastic. It's too bad it's used as an example of a "down year" for the Cadets. I find that in most years the Cadets are out of the medals there are plenty of gold nuggets one can pan out of the metaphorical dirt. '99 is a perfect example. Seriously, who doesn't think the quad sequence is anything but pure gold? How about White Rabbit in '06? Best part of that show IMHO. The French horn feature in '15? So many nuggets I'm getting gold fever, baby!

  8. As we currently stand, with show and uniform releases trickling in, I am really feeling the vibe that this season is going to be a huge departure from the last few seasons in programming, look and sound. I've been watching corps for a loooong time now, and I'm struggling to think of another year where the expectations for a DCI "cultural revolution" were quite this strong. Maybe with the brass switch in 2000 (though corps did it fairly piecemeal), or when everyone suddenly veered avant-garde and symphonic in '92 and '93? Or maybe the end of the '70's style of DCI after The Cadets changed the game? i guess my question is - can you feel it coming in the air tonight, so to speak, and have you felt it before? Mike

  9. Heard it at camps and this show has that same energy as 2015 but a different approach and I think it will be a really unique addition to the 2017 season! Brass has stepped up and I think they're more realistic in terms of arranging this year for sure. I think everyone will enjoy this show this year.

  10. I will say that the vertical line looks very similar to the "I" in this poster for the 2001 film "A.I. Artificial Intelligence," except that it's a girl, not a boy.

  14. But their great leap backwards as you called 2016 was their attempt at a modern show? It’s not the what, it’s the how All this chatter about old music, new music, costumes, uniforms and junk…silly. It’s the context and how they are utilized and preformed

  15. I do love that show. Bright Cadets brass sound, and the three songs work together so, so well. And, of course, 14 tenors... Mike

  17. The 1975 Bluegrass Nationals finals scores appear on Corpsreps under "Garfield Cadets". It was their first "national" title in over a decade and marked their resurgence as a potential contender on the big stage. They made DCI Finals for the first time that season, and eventually battled to the top over the next several years. That '75 show in Tennessee was a true turning point in the corps' history.

  18. I can't help but chuckle at the complete perfectness of this, imo... lol! An elite DCI corps goes into an off season secrecy mode, and the public receives the Corps theme title and the music composers the Corps will draw upon with absolutely no Corps press release and absolutely no public fanfare about it whatsoever before the public gets the info on their 2017 show theme. Oh, this is starting out as one fine and wonderful day, I must say !

  19. these are better. you could start back with colorguard appearing on Glee, contemporary color, virtually every NFL team now fielding a drumline, etc... viral memes are fun but they rapidly burn out and disappear. imo it would be far better to dramatically increase the amount of content than to create one-off viral videos (although monetizing a video could be a heck of a way to pay for your dues!) so one the one hand, there's been a tiny, itty, bitty, minuscule expansion of the niche. on the other hand, it's still mostly invisible. on the gripping hand, in today's my-refigerator-talks-to-my-thermostat interconnected world, it might not take much of a kick to get things rolling.

  20. well just take a bow, and get off the stage. Don't be like those Hollywood loons that tell their fellow back slappers in the audience how " truly honored" they are and want to thank their accountant, their agent, their hair stylist, their security guard, their limo driver, their cook, their company, their producer, their banker, their lawyer, their mistress, their gigolo, their shrink, the Wife, the kids, their yada yada yada,,, zzzzzzzzz..... zzzzzzz...yada yada yada..... commercial break.

  25. I wasn't just the look, it was everything. Whatever, disagree if you want but the Mason years were a failure IMO. They did the same thing they did at Star 1985-1989 - wrote shows beneath the talent they had, resulting in early/mid season success and finals night disappointments. I was waiting for them to take the Scouts to the next level, like the did at Star in 1990, but they never did it. 2014 was a disaster. The organization, as a whole, hasn't been forward thinking in a long long long time, and it shows in the results - music, drill, movement, dance, colorguard, uniforms - all of it. I loved the 2015 show. But, it too wasn't very forward looking. I honestly like older shows better. I think they were more entertaining and much better, but that's not the world we live in. If you want to be competitive, it's a new era. I thought Mason played it very smart in 2010. Well designed show. Not designed to win. Designed to get them back in finals. It worked. After 2010 - stagnation. The 2015 team did a great job with that show. Again, very well designed, passed a couple corps up, and gave them their highest placement since 2005. Great achievement. 2016 was such a huge step backwards. It's time Regiment and Scouts look to the future. Leave the past in the past. Scouts appear to be doing that, which makes me happy.

  32. ye better get ye to Berry College there in Rome Saturday at 9am so ye might experience some mystical conversion; and so engraced; ye will witness the miraculous passing of the tassel from one side to the other as a certain podium prince becomes a king. Otherwise ye will be relegated to remain a heathen for saying it's just only Mass. No wonder ye is experiencing Strange Things. "Like it seems sort of like" hath ye already been banished to Mt. Diablo in California with the rest of the Valley Girls, ye all?

  35. While I don't remember a sop solo in the Adams piece then, I do know Drew played a short sop solo in the Preludes, Fugues, and Riffs feature that same summer while Jason DeGroff played the sop solo in The Letter from Home piece in the same show.

  36. There is a DCI/DCA show in Woodstock GA on July 14 and it is on Carolina Golds schedule on their website. The old DCI Southeast at the Georgia Dome is not taking place this year (the Dome was torn down) so they will not make that trip to GA. Gold is also listed for the Dowingtown PA show. Looking at google maps Raleigh to Reading is 6 hours and 45 min, while Raleigh to Atlanta is 6 hours and 21 min, so Atlanta isn't really that much closer than going up North to Reading for a corps from Raleigh. Also I believe the corps staff has a really good relationship with the Buccaneers leadership so visiting them is a good thing. Gold has very distinct geography disadvantage anywhere they go they are spending a lot more time on the bus and have less practice time than some others. It is also very expensive to take long bus trips so they may have fewer shows during the season than some others. (yes this is probably true for Minnesota and other NonNortheastern corps)

  37. A combination of both, I suppose. As far as Catholic churches are concerned, many of them are struggling just to keep their doors open.... in particular those who also run a school. Not sure they have the resources to sponsor a corps anymore.

  42. I know we have no hard numbers to throw around, but having been to a lot of DCI auditions and rehearsals the last couple of years, the problem is not needing more kids coming out - it's that there are not enough corps to hold all of them. There are a *ton* of great musicians that excluded, sadly. Mike
