  1. Yes yes another site displaying corps scores and stats.. However!! I really wanted to gear this towards past and present instructors as well as being very "mobile friendly" since most everyone on the road will be viewing from a phone / tablet. I would love feedback and dcp was the first place I thought to ask. Please feel free to bash, yell at, ignore, block, etc.. I've been away from DCI for awhile and thought this could be a fun way to get back involved! http://www.frontensemble.com

  2. I think we had about 60 horns (just six contras) in Spirit of Atlanta in the late 70s, and I think the volume we put out would hold its own against pretty much anyone these days. Of course we had a couple of HUGE advantages -- G bugles and Jim Ott.

  3. Good thing this stadium is made of concrete and steel, otherwise Crowns Horn line would have crumbled it to dust with their massive opening note. The Corps is amazing, in all aspects. The one issue right now is something the staff can fix. Focus. One doesn't know where to look or listen. You're drawn everywhere at once, like looking at a nebula vs. Pun intended, a Star. Crown could easily win it all in Indy. Amazing!

  4. I want cool music and cool visuals that leave me moved and wanting more. Don't care how they do it.

  5. Crown doesn't need to add. They need to subtract and clarify the message. The trampolines should be the first to go.

  7. Boston was much much much improved as well Corps is starting to get the massive challenge of this year's program under feet Percussion is the strength. GE remains a challenge but I'm sure their talented staff will tweak some things.

  9. Cadets posted this on Facebook, that makes me all fuzzy inside. : "This shot is taken in Lynn ... just after the vocal ... WE ARE AMERICANS and as "Simple Gifts" kicks in !!!! WOW ..."

  10. All corps get better as the season progresses, but the Saders have a great opportunity to improve more than most corps this year. May we see a surge that will be for the ages.

  11. The activity just sucks for you, I find good in every show. There is a kid on the field spinning and playing for me, I like it. I'll view as much as I can all season, and never be bored with a full day of viewing FN or live. See the difference? I'm the guy who does three day music festivals and will not be bored with any performance in front of me.

  12. I totally agree. Ultimately art is at its most successful when it inspires deeper examination & learning from its audience.

  13. As a "lifer" pretty much, I would like to see them get away from the same type of theme (death primarily). While this isn't the "what they should play thread", the Alpine Symphony by Richard Strauss would be a fantastic piece for them and there is already a built in theme. Now, this is where I'm going to lose a lot of you but, I would like them to consider some of the music of Alan Silvestri, primarily movie music. Perhaps my favorite soundtrack of his was from the first Judge Dredd movie. Dredd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1WT7qfVYkM&index=2&list=RDvsDlvAwMhJA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsDlvAwMhJA&list=RDvsDlvAwMhJA#t=0 Alpine Symphony https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQhpWsRhQGs Also The Wasps Overture Ralph Vaughan Williams should be considered. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25HABTNWW78

  14. If Crown's GE scores were matching their music and visual, they'd probably be on top. Interested to see what they do over the 6 days they're taking off to fix that.

  19. Maybe a little cheese could help the "silent" transition to "Shadow Behind The Iron Sun". Narration w/ synth, French Horn Solo & Metallic Percussion "Space the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Carolina Crown. It's continuing mission - to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and civilizations. To boldly go where no drum corps has ever gone before..." Just kidding... No need to tell me how stupid this is.

  20. This is by far the best, most comprehensive analysis site I've seen for DCI. Period. And mobile friendly. Well done, this will be my new go-to spot!

  21. I have listened to this show 17 times since I saw in in Akron and the APD's went up. I love this show, I can't wait to see in two weeks in texas. I think they are in the best position, being in 4th this early and knocking on the door of 3rd and second. God knows they have the crowd behind them this year.

  22. Twas a great night of drum corps at beautiful Ames Field. I had the annual panic attack of when this 7 PM show started. Was Ames Field on Central Time or Eastern Time? Luckily, there was an Indiana map in the car, which included a kooky dividing line through the northwest part of Indiana. Rensselaer and Hebron are on Central Time, but how about Michigan City? How many fans show up an hour early, thinking that Michigan City is on Alllentown time? Ames Field is a great venue each year for this Cavaliers-hosted show. There are surround-sound neighborhood fireworks at dusk, a DQ due east from the stadium, and end-of-night half price concessions, where brats drop from $3.50 to $1.75, and whole Domino's pizzas fall from $10 to $5. "I remember this bathroom," someone said in the men's room. And another dude replied, "I hope they were good memories." The Michigan CIty High School band played the Banner, in full uniform. It was a comfortable night, weather-wise, Open Class corps Legends opened the show, followed by Colt Cadets and Genesis. At the end of the terrific Genesis show, several of us in the stands asked, "Is this an Open Class or World Class corps?" Genesis received a genuine standing ovation at the end of their wonderful program. At intermission, we were treated to a small toy drone plane hovering above the field. The PA system was on the near-fritz all evening, with barely audible announcements. The sound was excellent behind the grandstand, just not in the grandstand. The Colts show included creamy flag work, dreamy musical charts, and very distracting narration. One can readily tell this Oz show through music. Allow the music to tell the story. In the DCI marketplace, the Colts are selling last season T-shirts for 5 bucks, but my torso is not S not 3XL. Sigh. The Troopers have another Troopers show - and the crowd loves it. In this tale, the opening narration works. A week ago, the Troopers souvie stand added handsome $15 business card cases - but I am convinced they should market them as Abe Lincoln coin holders. I plan to stock my case with chewing gum, mints, or shiny pennies. When I watched the DCI at the Movies event on June 23, it looked like the Phantom Regiment guard ended the show in brown. But in person, the guard is now in a more appropriate black. Maybe there was just an old picture tube at AMC East that night. Or Akron smog. Excellent flag work. Good brass, yet not spine-tingling. At the conclusion of this show, please lower the hem line on the black robe on the last swan, down to the turf, to hide her bird legs. Cavaliers, Immortal. Indeed. Loved it. Do yourseld a favor, and do NOT watch the marimba circular chase bit - but watch what the rest of the corps is doing. WOW! Fantastic drill. * * * * * A great night of music. Hoping for the same in Lisle - where thunderstorms are expected Sunday night.

  24. Guard is PR's strongest caption this year imo, at least right now. They do a LOT of work, and their weapon tosses are both more numerous and more difficult than in the majority of years' past. Also, their weapon section is significantly larger than in years' past (= more difficulty). If PR has any problems this year, the guard is not one of them. Also, their movement book is great this year... The all-movement "Rockord files" (old-school, fast-paced ripple effect using flags and rifle tosses down a vertical straight line -- usually 3 across -- that showed up in a lot of Regiment shows in various combinations in the late 70s & early 80s) is pretty KICK A**. One criticism I have from years' past is that PR's guard often added movement for movement's sake alone. It was not particularly effective or all that difficult...more like window dressing. This year, they have some great movement statements that are purposeful and tend to involve a great deal of training/ technique. I don't know names, but I remember reading a guard instructor had been promoted to guard caption head this season. She (I belive it was a she) is doing a wonderful job imo.....the guard is clearly one of the corps' strongest assets this year.

  25. All shows were very good. They started 45 min early with shows from three bands. I have never been to a band show so it was an interesting experience. It also put 250 or so more kids in the stands along with their family friends etc. a lot of seat surfing and having to remind myself that I too was once an annoying teenager. It was nice to see Racine back in the old uniform and fielding a good size compared to last year. There were components that were very good. Soloist was solid. Narration was fun - when it could be heard. Pioneer had some strong moments. Their props didn't do much for the show in my opinion. Went a little overboard on the electronics. It seemed like they had more fun in the show than I have seen before. Usually I don't have an appreciation for their music selections but that isn't the case this year. I was looking forward to Jersey Surf. It wasn't the crazy fun shows of the past two years but I enjoyed it. There was a moment where the crowd all went "awhhh" at the same time. I really liked Blue Stars. Uniform change was good but they need to work on keeping the shakos from popping up too early. Guard had some difficult work that looked great even before they clean it. I loved the props. Madison was great. Love the music. Not sure how I feel about the end but the soloist was fabulous. And the wandering guy is just too bizarre right now. I really liked the Blue Devils show. That is the first time I've said that since rediscovering the drum corps world a few years ago. The zombie (I'm guessing that is what he was) went on way too long. Their guard is just amazing. It was a beautiful night to enjoy all of the corps.

  26. For me, the biggest positive surprise is the quality being put out by The Academy, Mandarins, and Pacific Crest. Based on what they have put out in previous years, I thought they were a bit underscored in Southern California. They won't make finals, but their race to see who finishes up top will be really fun to watch.

  29. Probably the more outrageous stuff like: America has done some good things. Terrorism is kinda bad. The holidays are a happy time for some people regardless of what they mean to them. The words of presidents can affect things. ... That sort of highly controversial views.

  30. I never count out Cadets at the end of season. they are dangerous the last couple weeks. Bluecoats really seem to have some great momentum.

  31. I think Crown will get swept up in "over design" and not pull ahead of Cadets and Coats. However I can see a scenario where coats overtake Cadets and place second behind BD.

  34. Just got back to NYC from the show. I'm too tired to post a full review tonight. But I will say all the corps were fantastic tonight. First time seeing Crown live and they did not disappoint. Bluecoats were the star tonight. They were great. Cadets...well, there's nothing to describe them other than NAILS. They pretty much nailed almost everything tonight. No surprise they took percussion tonight. Boston's show is excellent. It's dark and it seems like "Animal Farm" is the devil's version of an animal farm. Spirit was great. Typical down-home-comfort-food type show. Excellent! Nighty night.

  41. Huge congrats to Crown for the percussion win! Prosperie is a great judge and one of the best percussionists out there so for him to judge Crown ahead of a phenomenal Cadets line is really saying something. I can't wait to see what happens when the west coast joins the party. This caption just got real interesting...

  42. If a corps expects to have every show appearance "pay for itself" through fees then it has the wrong business model. And that's what kills expansion.

  44. Sounds like a great show, but a bit too far for me to drive even if I didn't have a meeting early the next morning. Instead, I'll offer some predictions: DCA 1. 81.65 -- Fusion Core 2. 76.95 -- Cadets2 3. 75.20 -- Bushwackers 4. 73.05 -- Windsor Regiment 5. 70.40 -- Carolina Gold DCI 1. 82.1 -- Cadets 2. 81.8 -- Carolina Crown 3. 81.7 -- Bluecoats 4. 74.5 -- Boston Crusaders 5. 71.3 -- Spirit of Atlanta It's always fun to see one's predictions smashed, and I look forward to that. (Edited to fix typo.)

  45. ...and we're off! It would be fun to just focus on how improved Pioneer is this season and what a good show they're putting on the field. You can tell the kids know it and it's starting to show in their confidence and performance. They were given a show this year by their staff with some real meat to it. It will be a JOY to watch them progress.
