  1. I tired to ignore this but I can't. It haunts me. wrong wrong wrong this is why we are here this is how these things continued for so long this attitude has to stop this time is over and if the xmen didn't have a chat with everyone and their parents that attended a camp, paid their fees, toured or went to audition about this staffer, then shame of them for taking that choice away from others

  2. I'm sure she would pick up a lot of intelligence sitting by me: "I can't feel my butt". "Do you smell something? Someone needs deodorant." "Could the emoting look any more forced?" "Could they squeeze any more people in this row?"

  3. I don’t think she’d want to sit by us at Indy. Last year, a couple with baby was behind us at prelims. He crapped his diaper not once, but twice. The guy next to us stands up, turns around and says “who #### their pants?”

  4. No one should have to "Just put up with it". The fact that prevailing attitudes in the 70's made it difficult for you to do otherwise certainly perpetuated the behavior. In 2018, hopefully more women (and men in certain situations as well) feel empowered to emphatically say "No!" when a situation crosses the line.

  5. Understood and wasn’t pointing the finger your way. Just bringing up the point that there is no set standard of acceptable/unacceptable. But how can any person be watched 24/7 to make sure they behave. You’d have to monitor the phone calls and texts. Sorry but don’t buy the he was being watched defense.

  6. According to the article, 37 year old Moody made a 22 year old female staff member "uneasy by giving her lingering hugs, placing his hand on her shoulder or back or sitting too close to her. Moody also made comments about what she was wearing, she said, and offered compliments on her looks." As a marching member, you may not be familiar yet with what is acceptable in the business world between colleagues of a company, but "lingering hugs" from a 37 year old staff member to a 22 year old staff member is not considered appropriate, especially where the 37 year-old make was likely her direct supervisor (if he was Assistant Corps Director at the time). If anyone was actually "watching him", as you say, that would have been a red-flag. The article also said that 35 year old Moody propositioned an age-out to go to his house in Texas, where they had sex, and then she got a job on staff with the corps. That women indicated that Moody told her at that time about the earlier issues from 2010, so clearly she was NOT informed about his history either formally or informally during her time marching with the corps. It's very easy to like people when you only see their good points, but if you aren't a female marcher, you would probably be better off not offering your take on the situation as representative of the viewpoint held by all corps vets, even the females.

  7. you'd have to convince people with a direct interest in how things are now to be willing to revise the entire bylaws and lose some of that control. you probably have a better chance of seeing Congress approve term limits for themselves

  8. It is Dan's job to represent DCI. In this situation, and in my experience in communications, you get all of your facts together and then share the information with the press. Answer the questions. For those you can't answer... don't. YEA has less resources than DCI does and the have shown what happens when you embrace transparency. The old board was hiding and victim shaming. The new board has embraced a communications strategy of blunt talk, openness and transparency with EVERYONE (members, staff, fans, press). The result? The stories are now about how they are turning things around. Making the organization function properly. Addressing the old problems with new solutions. Preparing for the future. All POSITIVE stories after being brutally open. I completely agree there needs to be preparations and some coaching. But this is not complicated stuff. Get the facts, tell the truth, for questions that can't be answered get the answers... and repeat. And for the information that may be confidential in nature... just say so. But hiding behind "I will not answer any questions" or "submit them in writing" is not a good look for the activity. Given yesterday's article it is even more incumbent upon Dan to address this head on or it is going to be death by a thousand cuts.

  12. When I was a young woman, probably about 21, my boss couldn’t keep his crusty paws off me. He’d come up behind me and start massaging my shoulders. I’m sure he was looking down my shirt, too. He was probably about 60 and reeked of cigarettes. I can still remember that. My apologies to you smokers. I did nothing. I sat there frozen and just waited for him to stop. It was the 70’s, I needed my job, and I hadn’t gained the confidence that I now have. Or the financial security. I feel empathy for young women who just put up with it. I was that woman 40 plus years ago. I’m just sharing a little insight into the female psyche. Ot at least my psyche.

  21. The DCI response has been like it was when the licensing stuff blew up.......hide until attorneys sign off on everything. Plus DCI, as had been stated many times, is not like the NCAA with total ( and at times over reaching) control and Power....per the bylaws, the main office is set up to support the tour and merchandise, not be the be all and end all of power and rules and regulations

  28. Shouldn't it just be mandatory in DCI that if State Board's of Education believe you are unfit by character, behaviors, incidents to be teaching anywhere in their schools, ( revoking a teacher's license ) that DCI should have a required policy that you are likewise deemed unfit to be around youth that travel from school to school on 9 -10 week summer tours ? Isn't some of this pretty predictable if we think about it ? The fact that on more than one occasion DCI Corps are found hiring people that had incidents of sexual misconduct , had lost their Teaching License, is both appalling as well as pretty predictable that DCI would ultimately find itself in the current situation that it finds itself in. What were they thinking ? Here's the deal.. around youth, there is no such thing as a " second chance " regarding behaviors that involve sexual misconduct by teachers/ instructors/ school employees in trusted positions of authority over youths in their charge. All 50 state's Teacher Licensing Boards believe so. DCI should come into the 21st Century here and adopt policy and procedures, with stiff penalties, including termination of membership in DCI, for Corps found hiring people that have previously had their Teaching License revoked by virtue of incidents of sexual misconduct.

  32. I'm sorry to dwell on this, but ... the guy who allowed a predator to be his assistant corps director; the guy who apparently didn't find it necessary to inform the MMs or parents of this fact; the guy who didn't act until the Philadelphia Inquirer apparently shamed him into it; is also the chairman of DCI's Board of Directors? The man we are supposed to trust to lead drum corps out of this? How amazingly tone deaf and flat out stupid. Why isn't Morrison gone? Today.

  34. most drum corps shows are nowadays....drumcorps fans who don't follow winterguard would never know any different. I still love that Crown's famous 'Endings' show (Finis) was done by St. Ann's winterguard the year before! ;-) No worries though...Michael Shapiro is a genius! PS...both of his world winterguards (CGT Dallas and West Broward HS) won fan favorite at WGI this year. If you want to see a fan-friendly, very approachable show for someone not familiar with winterguard, the west broward show this year was outstanding. check it out. it's full of shaprio awesomness.

  37. With commercial space travel becoming more prevalent in modern society thanks to companies like SpaceX, "This Flat Earth" tells the story of the first Civilian space mission to the Moon and back. While testing the limits of modern technology is the main purpose of their mission, what these brave Men and Women discover has humanity shaken to its core: The Earth is Flat. REPERTOIRE "This Bitter Earth" by Clyde Otis is the musical glue that holds the show together from Lift-Off till Landing. As our Voyagers embark on the first mission of kind, this piece harkens back to the 1960's - the era of the first Space Race between the United States and the USSR. John Mackey's hauntingly beautiful "This Cruel Moon" explores the emotional tension of experiencing existence on the moon, while simultaneously uncovering the truth behind The Government's longest kept secret and conspiracy. No stranger to the Drum Corps field (See: Crossmen 2012), Michael Jackson's iconic "Earth Song" represents a call for truth. As transmitted images of The Earth make their way across social media, mass protests and riots ensue worldwide. Finally, Dvořák’s classic "New World Symphony" depicts life back on our now seemingly unfamiliar home planet. This chapter will take humanity, quite literally, to the Edge of the Earth.

  40. What Cadet's guard needs is some personality - look at their Championship level guards (see video above) and all the current top guards, and they all have abundant amounts of 'personality'. It is not good enough just to spin and dance in time, you need something extra that helps bring the show to life (think SCV last year, Carolina Crown and BD most years).

  45. So texting a kid you want to see them nude is ok. It’s not actual rape. That’s what you’re saying. You technically would be labeled an enabler. I read the article and I know what I’d have done: I’d have said pound sand. I’ve been falsely accused of inappropriate behavior and it almost ruined me after the kid admitted they lied. And the Grace of God says “ inappropriate behavior with kids is inexcusable” and yes yes I have oodles of friends with Bones heritage going back to the merger. And I can tell you they don’t approve

  46. I saw it. I know people interviewed in the article and people I reached out to told me. I’ll be delicate again: he lost his ####### teaching license for sending lewd text messages to students and then was hired two ####### times by youth organizations. I don’t care how ####### good he is, he should never have been ####### hired to teach youth. There are some things in life you shouldn’t get second chances at.... and teaching kids when your ####### teaching license was revoked for sending x rated texts is one of them. The road to hell is often paved with good intentions no matter how ill informed those intentions may be.
