  4. Well... seeing this on multicam is significantly different from the views I've gotten from Hop... A little in shock All I can say is that this is THE most bizarre drum corps show I have ever seen, and that's saying something considering some of the stuff BD's put out. Wow.

  5. Will it be pulled by 2007 guard members?

  6. As the excitement is building around everyone else, SCV is sitting idly by. Waiting perhaps? To pounce on us when we least expect it? Blue Devils are going to be incredible, Carolina Crown has a great vehicle, Cadets too, and who knows what the hell Bluecoats are up to. And then there's Vanguard sitting over in the corner. lol But in all seriousness. They've been posting little descriptions along with a video of their source material on Facebook the last few days of how they're going to use them in the theme of the show. I think I know what this show is, I think I'm onto you SCV. It seems like this is one of those shows that doesn't try to tell a story, but isn't just a simple concept one either. I think what they're going for is just to capture the essence, power, beauty, and emotion of nature around us. A constant presence, almost a character in itself. I think that this one could be incredibly beautiful and absolutely stunning and breathtaking if they play their cards right. Every time I start thinking the theme is pretty basic, I remind myself of a few things: Their design team is a championship waiting to happen. Their caption heads (that incredibly new brass one is of note) are a championship waiting to happen. Their across the board solidness, if heightened, is a championship waiting to happen. Their amazing source music, could be a championship waiting to happen. I've got my eyes on you SCV. I think while everyone is getting riled up about everyone else, you're sitting in the corner waiting til Friday night to just show up and say what you have to say.

  8. funny quick story as we kill some time between now and Thurs: Back in the early 60's in New England, Drum Corps in the region every March or April would have standstill competitions. They would usually take place near Boston, usually in a hockey rink venue, ie BU, BC, maybe Boston Garden and such. One year, in the winter, early spring, a rumor was rampant that Boston had lost a lot of brass players from the season before and were down to maybe 18-20 horns ( 36-40 was the norm that constituted a " full " line back then... most had 33-36). Anyway, Boston certainly knew of the rumor. When it came time for them to march into the arena, the door opened, and out marched Boston.... Drumline, Guard, DM. They smartly lined up at attention, the DM had them do a dress right,, dress, etc. Most in the audience meanwhile counted the numbers of horns, and sure enough, there were about 18-20. So the rumor of 18-20 brass was true. There was a hush in the audience. You could hear a pin drop. A minute passed. Seemed like an eternity to everyone as we watched for BAC to start. Then over in the opposite side of the arena, the door there opened. nothing there, but BAC could not proceed with their pre show prep, until somebody would shut the door. But nobody did. Then lo and behold, out marched from THAT door, another 18-20 horns for Boston. The audience stood up and cheered as they marched out and then joined the other BAC horns in line. Boston milked that off season rumor for all its worth ( haha!). Sure, it was part grandstanding, part B.T. Barnum, and all that. But it was so freakin' cool for a kid like me to see... and I was barely of teenage years at the time. So sometimes even a negative rumor, if played well, can pay out dividends, imo ( haha!)

  9. The "thing" doesn't seem to be integrated into the show very well, IMO. They just drag it across the field pretty much in a straight line, unload the saloon doors, reload the saloon doors, stand on it, throw flags from it and that's it... Not sure that it adds anything to the production - kinda' like the trampolines a few years back; if they took it away who would miss it?

  10. After all the personal beef you've told me over private message about that you have with Phantom Regiment's staff, I can't take any of your comments about the corps seriously anymore.

  11. Drum corps isn't just a bunch of spoiled white kids. A lot of them give up semesters in school to raise enough money just to be able to march. And there are plenty of members of every corps in DCI that are gay, or come from various ethnic backgrounds.

  12. Thanks. I've tried to keep quiet because I wanted to see how it looked in uniform and with show flags and I do believe that people are entitled to an opinion. I was getting frustrated with some of the comments on the guard but tried to take them in stride. I teach a world class guard so I do have some knowledge (lol). I get why everyone is hesitant with the guard, I do. My daughter was in that show and I loved it but I knew. The kids were great but the design not so much. But this year it's different. My daughter tells me all the time it's "special" and the kids are loving performing it!! You have to try to look past the dirt and look at the intent. Will it be effective? Will is generate moments WHEN it's clean? That is what matters. The dirty will disappear day by day. The key, IMO, to this show is going to be the characterization and performance of the members, especially the guard. They will need to bring it to life, and I have absolutely no doubt they will. Kristy is BRILLIANT when it comes to that. Believe me, I have competed against her for years.......

  13. I've been lurking as a guest for years. I know how the dcp community is lol. I'm finally bored enough to start participating! In other news crown and cadets look fantastic, can't wait to see them live in Thursday, and to see what bluecoats bring to the table.

  15. Synth at the end of the Cadets show is about twice as loud as the hornline. Balance being that out of whack in the pit should be judged as harshly as it would be in the brass. It's been seven years, and I have no reason to believe a corps has ever faced consequences on the sheets for those issues. Every year I keep hoping a corps will experiment with some softer max synth volumes and every year I'm left wanting. Incredible show nonetheless.

  18. That show would probably do a lot better than what they've actually put on the last few years. I'd put money on it.

  19. Was just looking for videos from the dress runs last night, and saw that someone posted the 2006 show a few days ago. Decided to watch it because it had been a while. Man, it just oozes elegance. The way the arrangements breathe, and take their time reaching a logical conclusion is just so nice to listen to. Love this show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMyJZ70w3Jg

  21. From a (former Crown member) guard perspective: Holy heck the book this year that Michael has written for the guard is truly "relentless." This might be the most difficult book I've seen from Crown. The amount of unison tosses from the weapons, the slick movement underneath them, and the difficult catches - astonishing. And for the guard to be executing this well at the beginning of the season gives me hope that we won't see too much watering down for the sake of cleanliness. It's also refreshing to see so much unison work with the all parts of the guard. Movement as well is sharp and well-choreographed. I think the guard is hungry this year to bring the Zingali to Fort Mill, and I hope they continue to clean clean clean and reach a level of performance that goes beyond what BD magically brings every year. Speaking of BD, they've won the colorguard caption since 2008. I'm rooting for this year's crown guard to shake things up a bit (knock on wood). It's going to be fun watching them evolve this season. Best of luck!

  25. Come on, man that's not fair. I love most Cadets shows, including last year. It just pains me to see what used to be the corps that pushed become the corps that's being pulled along.

  27. I thought they were tremendous, way better than last year and they will be a few corps' worst nightmare as the season progresses.

  30. Michael Boo must be so disappointed that Hopkins referred to Lucas Oil as a dome.

  33. Anyone want to meet up tonight at the polar bear's stadium in Ada? I was at a family reunion in Dayton, and made the last minute decision to drive the wrong direction to catch the Cadets instead of driving back south to Crown territory. Who needs sleep, anyway!

  35. Its interesting how the two corps with the most championships are the most criticized on dcp but the two other corps within the top 4 have threads that are full of rainbows and unicorns.

  36. I totally agree. I loved my " Uniform " and was proud to wear it bitd ,BUT would have loved as a member the excitement to really be part of the show theme and change year to year. I have been part of band programs that the drum line, pit and DMs followed a total theme look as with the guard members which also brought a unique and complete look to the program in a given year. I do agree though with you, it's just the beginning...jmo

  37. Historically I have almost always loved their guard costuming, going waaay back to the 80's. They tend to look very elegant and classy most years.

  39. I've seen video of two shows so far, Crown and Scouts. Now yes, I see the drum corps world through my Green glasses, but I think the reason I dig this year's Madison show is because it is very much a traditional show. It has the things shows have to have to be competitive...ie, clear theme, body movement, etc....but if you're looking for traditional as far as fast, complex drill, screaming sopranos/trumpets, LOUD in your face horn book, recognizable and accesible music...it's about as traditional as you could ask for. It mixes, very well, the modern with the past.

  40. I don't agree. If you read this thread, it's far from optimism and constant hype. The Crown thread is all unicorns and rainbows. I've read just about every thread on this site and the Crown one is by far the most saccharine.
