  2. Why would anyone care what an accused rapist has to say anyway??? This born-again route he's on fools no one. He just proves to everyone he is crazy as people said and dangerous. Drum corps will wash their hands of him in short order.

  3. Yikes. It appears that particular incident (the first U.S. case where the source wasn't known) may have been the result of some pretty serious incompetence -- and that's describing the situation pretty generously. Per the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Washington Post (three separate but related articles), workers who met and oversaw the repatriation of Americans who'd been flown back from Asia and quarantined at Travis AFB (near the location of the new case announced yesterday) weren't provided with protective equipment or training for days, were told when they complained about it that they weren't being team players and were threatened with termination, freely mingled with other personnel on base and in nearby communities, have since flown on commercial flights (and not just in California), and themselves have yet to be tested for coronavirus. So again everyone: you should assume that right now, anyone you meet could be carrying the virus and just not showing symptoms yet. Don't shake hands with anyone -- or if you do, wash them thoroughly before eating. Wash your hands frequently anyway. Don't put your hands near your face, especially if you haven't washed them. Use hand sanitizer if you can't wash. (If you have kids, make sure they are doing all this too.) Sterilize surfaces. Stay home if you get sick. (See a doctor if it feels serious.) And if you're sick and you have to go out, wear a mask to reduce the chances you'll infect someone else. That's how you protect yourself and others!

  4. A few years ago, Spirit had a corps dad that toured every summer on Spirit's medical team whose "real life job" was the emergency coordinator for the U.S. Public Health Service, and was also the federal government's leading expert on chemical and biological terrorism. Donald Wetter is now retired in Arizona, but he sure would have been a good person to have on the road this summer. If DCI wants the opinion or guidance from someone who is an expert in public health issues such as this and who also totally understands the unique challenges of keeping a touring drum corps healthy, I have Dr. Wetter's contact info.

  20. I guess putting out statistics and numbers, everyone just created their own narrative about what the numbers were saying. I posted the numbers just as a point of reference, with no bias one way or the other. They were literally put there as stats. Nothing more. Nothing less. But by all means, go ahead and assume what I meant, and reacting to the post.

  26. I took the response to mean that the death rate is higher in a part of China where medical support might not be as strong as in other parts of the world. That said, Japan is a modern, industrialized nation with great medical facilities -- and Japan just announced that all schools will be closed for the next month.

  30. That would solve the problem of where to put the ever-growing throngs of insane cheering staff members without irritating fans. Seriously, though, a few thoughts. While it is too early to say for sure where this is headed, the patterns of behavior suggest two likely outcomes. One is the use of quarantines of at least two weeks in duration wherever authorities determine necessary. The other would be that virus fears depress in-person attendance at group events, and/or shift some fans toward viewing events from home. Maybe 2020 was the perfect time for FloMarching to ramp up their coverage. Mobile kitchens will face intermittent challenges when quarantines interrupt supply chains, or detain volunteers from going on tour when promised. (That can also affect teaching staff and drivers who rotate in/out of tour during the season.) Need a plan B (and C, D, E... ) for corps housing. The first instance of any touring youth group being quarantined at a school will prompt some other schools to cancel their prior commitments to house corps. An often-overlooked SoundSport innovation might become relevant - "virtual performances": "Virtual Performances – Virtual Performance Events are offered SoundSport® ensembles through e-Adjudicate Online Judging. Participants will receive invaluable input from nationally-recognized performing arts education professionals and feedback to help them maximize their ensemble’s performance strengths, while refining areas of opportunity to create high-achieving, highly-entertaining performances." In other words, judges view performances remotely via webcast. While that is far, far from an ideal scenario, it is an option worth considering if quarantines or travel limitations interfere with the tour.

  32. This started when a certain 6-year vet asked me to get him a cup of water during a break from practice. When an ambitious New Guy asked him right after if he needed a water, he answered "naw, Skeletor's hookin' me up," using the nickname for the first time. When everybody laughs at a new nickname, it tends to stick! (Not to point out, having lots of gears on your necklace has its perks!) Yours truly, Skeletor

  37. Interesting. The large organization I help manage (very large restaurant chain) has already put together a task force who has met twice now They will meet again next Monday and update our guidance and preparedness plan Preliminary preparation has included purchase of mobile hand sanitation stations, supplemental sanitizer inventory, adjusted employee illness policy and procedures, education around our illness log processes, and we've appointed a member of our HR team as our lead coordinator and looped in a couple medical executives While currently the risk is "low" in the USA we felt it important to prepare since we serve several million customers monthly in terms of DCI you have traveling "pods" of individuals that could create risks in multiple ways - sharing disease as well as distribution It certainly a unique health-care risk probably time they establish a panel to monitor the situation, some initial dialogue and share findings with the DCI executive committee anything DCI can do to educate the corps themselves is HUGE - regarding food safety Servsafe certification would be a good start!

  45. I told BigW and some of the other folks on the DCA side a few years back that I was going to try to convince Britt to scream it during SOA's intro in Atlanta in 2018. It was her first drum corps show and I thought it would be funny. Unfortunately, they serve beer at the stadium literally every 22.5 feet so getting her to do anything other then comment loudly on random things like props was nearly impossible. I think Waliman is probably exactly right. Just because it made me laugh to read this post, here are some of the "first DCI experience" questions that I got that year (taken from my post in '18): Things my girlfriend said to me at DCI South this year (her first DCI show) that made me laugh: "You keep saying things like 'balls clean' and 'p**s clean.' None of those sound clean to me. Why don't all you drum people say like...'Brita Clean' or something?" "Why do they keep saying "dut, dut, dut?" (She then proceeded to say dut, dut, dut very loudly while jutting her head forward like a rooster clucking) "It's summer and all of these people are wearing jackets. Like, who wears a jacket in the summer? Wait a minute...you're wearing a jacket too! What the h**l man?!?!" (referring to corps jackets) "I found my favorite corps thingy!! They're from Denver and I'm from Denver! I'm buying all of their souvies on your debit card. I hope they win." (This is before she had even heard BK play) "They serve beer at this stadium?!?! How do I not know about this drum corps thing?" "I played clarinet in high school....this seems a little more....advanced." "So an entire corps was in the bathroom changing....." "I just noticed that all of you drum people look like your hands got run over by a truck. What's up with that?" "So many unitards.....just so many unitards..."
