Final thoughts from tonight: 1. Spirit of Atlanta has a great opening! If the rest of the show can be tweaked to resemble that feeling, they will be in good shape. 2. I thought the cadets would have been closer in score to Boston. Their brass sounded very good. But I do think they had some speaker issues. Just happy they are moving on from a tough offseason for the organization. 3. Boston has a good show that is smart. Features a lot of guard and percussion up front to highlight their strengths. Not as fun for the audience as last year’s show but really strong. They are better than last year and with a harder show, but moving up will be as tough as was predicted in the preseason. 4. Crown’s show was one I did not like on video and it was really good in person. They were noticeably not clean with their drill work and with guard at times, more than other corps. I think they gain on some of those ahead when they get their stuff cleaned up. 5. The hype is real. Bluecoats have a real shot at winning it all this year. They had the biggest audience reaction of the night. They were clearly far ahead of crown and Boston for a complete package tonight. Hats off to them!8 points

How freaking amazing would be if BAC topped Crown this season? I’d love to see it happen7 points

How I miss seeing those bluffs. I plan on dragging my wife to La Crosse in the near future to see the sights. Tonight will be special for my Godson. He's marching with Genesis this year as a rookie. He has heard stories about my corps and La Crosse most of his life. If you're in the stadium give a yell to "Jack"! Good luck to all the corps and especially all of the volunteers with all the corps and those running the contest!7 points

Since my position is known on here now, might as well share my 2nd article with you all! Pages 50 - 52. (And just read the whole thing while you're at it). https://www.drumcorpsworld.com/publications/2018/july/#page=50 It was really hard to try and summarize that month into two pages, and I definitely did it on the fly when I had (very little) down time. But I think I captured the important things I picked up during that month. Oh my God the people here are amazing, the environment that is created for the members is incredible, and while this is probably the hardest and most committed I have ever worked on something, getting to be on that field on opening night and watch all of that come to fruition made it all worth it and was something I'll never forget. Enjoy! Getting to interview some of the members and various other people in the corps was a blast.7 points

Some encouraging news: there is a bit of a breeze right now. A slight breeze is better than no breeze. For a bit of perspective for those of us who suffered through last winter here in the Boston area: The heat may be a bit taxing, but we're not shoveling the humidity, winds are not knocking down power lines with sib zero temperatures outside, there is no coastal erosion, we're not looking for layers, and we're not sliding as we drive the streets which the plows have not reached yet. We also have live drum corps tonight!6 points

I live somewhere with 0% humidity. Today has been. Omg. An adjustment. But wow. Boston is beautiful!6 points

Not gonna make any placement predictions, but I can tell this is going to be one of my favorite seasons of the modern era having seen most of the shows now. Holy wow. What an amazing year for drum corps.6 points

I’ve had a bit to drink tonight and I don’t know if this whole ‘SCV beating BD- again- before leaving Cal’ - is true. I’ll prob rediscover this again tomorrow morning- or afternoon6 points

Crown just outscored SCV from last night. I’ve got eyes and ears. Head to head SCV is 1.5-2 points better. If not more. I should learn from prior experience not to look at scores until San Antonio. But of course I do. :-)5 points

MANDARINS!!!! OMG!!!! AMAZING!!!! Good luck keeping them out of finals!!! BK I love your show.........but Mandarins are coming! Objects in your rear view mirror are closer than they appear. Great job Mandarins!!! And the lit up Rifles.......what a cool effect. Top ten show this year!5 points

I think SCV is the best this year. That show is incredible. I really get the sense of the whole concept. I really thought they were last year too but BD had the emotional thing in their back pocket which the ballad this year I feel the same but SCV just has the Babylon idea down. I really do like their whole trance dance thing or what ever. It is a very futuristic show. So glad I traveled up to Sac to watch them live.5 points

Way to go Bloo and Boston! Also, I’m dying to know how exactly Spirit’s scores will line up with the rest of the projected Finals bubble corps. St. Louis can’t come fast enough!4 points

You are certainly welcome to this opinion and I will not argue your point, BUT you might want to consider what Bloo's vocalist adds to their great show...which is MUCH! She is making the experience BETTER for all of those other 153 performing guard, percussion and brass members. She is also making the experience BETTER for most of the spectators. (MUCH BETTER for most I would say.) I would also point out that Bloo is touring with 154 members on the field plus several alternates. ALL are getting the experience of a lifetime. And I say again...thank you Bloo for using a LIVE singer not a pre-recorded version.4 points

Fun Fact: A Mandarins parent took the artistic rendering, developed the technical specs, and built it. If only more corps harnessed the talents they had within their family.4 points

Time for the rubber match between BD and SCV. 2-2 head up. Loving this. Yes i bleed blue and i am BD all the way, but seeing the West Coast on top with the Mandarins surging, yes i am loving all my Cali corps. If there is any corps on the planet i am ok with BD losing too, it's SCV. As long as we keep the titles in Cali, i can live with that every day of the week. So glad i will be there tonight to these shows live. DO IT UP DEVILS!!! DO YOUR THING SCV!!!4 points

It’s kinda hard to claim accessibility issues about one of the most recognizable paintings in American culture, honestly... Especially in an arts acitivity. No one should feel bad for not knowing it — and this is a great chance to learn! — but not knowing it doesn’t make it obscure.4 points

i don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but it's worth noting that Mandarins HANDILY beat BK in visual. Don't get me wrong, I know that's BK's weakness and that this would be a different story if we were talking about BK's searing, drool-inducing hornline, but still....Mandarins just behind last year's 8th place corps, who is also starting incredibly strong, and solidly over them in a full caption and 5/6 visual sub captions. I mean...Jesus. Mandarins clearly intend to prove that they want to become a mainstay of the Saturday night show. Couldn't be happier for the season this corps is having.4 points

Just watched Allentown performance. Bloo absolutely destroyed it. SARO is ungodly.4 points

As a former member of the BD organization- and totally unbiased- SCV clearly has a better show. But #### BD is awesome too. Love both4 points

West coast inflation doesn't exist. If anything, inflation is in the midwest with those 5 judge shows... By a lot, imo.4 points

SCV 2018 is up there with 87, 89, 99... Epic and powerful. That is all I have to say.4 points

Very few corps can match BK when it comes to intensity. Boy can they bring it! Great run by BK! Crowd seemed to favor Mandarins though.3 points

Are these educated eyes and ears? Because if so, you should know that you can't truly compare scores.3 points

I'll comment later about Cadets, but in short, lots of intensity at certain moments, but the kids seemed to have a great time and to me appeared much less stressed than I the past. Bloo is coming on the field. Quite the entrance!3 points

I’m pretty sure “being a pompous narcissist who has entirely disgraced the organization while driving off scores of valued and talented members and staff” fully justifies removal of a HOF member. Sadly Hopkins indiscretions went far beyond the alleged sexual and workplace harassment HOF is a privilege, not a right Falling to conduct required background checks is just yet another example of irresponsible leadership3 points

I don’t think the colors and pattern should be up to the members. But the activity has changed from marching to marching+dance, and the equipment has to change with it. Without commenting on the aesthetics, there is simply no way Bluecoats could have done any of their last three shows in their traditional uniform. One MM told me that there is a huge difference in the uniform this year even vs the white one-piece in which they ended the show last year. That this one feels no different physically from their practice run-through in shorts and t-shirt. That’s a really big deal when you are performing under brutal summer conditions and this kind of physical demand. Should the activity evolve this way? That’s a different debate. But we are here and they have to adapt.3 points
