  1. Another great show in Allentown. “They” all sat near me tonight. In front of me was the “Drum Corps died when the Chicago Royalaires disbanded” guy. Next to me, a kid who aged out last year who had no idea Drum corps existed before he marched. And of course Jeff Ream’s favorite: the band kids who claim their shows are better than those on the field sat behind me, and Mr. Clover, whoever you may be, your young charges claim you were consulted by every corps who placed 1st. through 10th, and maybe Cascades and Surf too, but your young charges were late. And you should sue BAC, Crown, Cavies, Crossmen, and Mandarins. They stole your ideas. Cascades: they had the tough job of opening the show. I think their show is good, and it should be strong enough to make semi’s. Jersey Surf: I’ve said before, Surf needs a show that keeps the marching members engaged and this show fits the bill. The switch of uniforms was flawless. Pacific Crest: A change of pace for PC. I found the show to be strong, especially the brass. Colts: seemed off tonight. The uniform change was a bit sloppy and at some points they did not seem engaged, at least compared with what I saw in Lawrence a few nights ago. Spirit of Atlanta: the show is similar to last year in that it is good, but not quite strong enough for finals. I did enjoy the three different uniforms. Phantom: they have worked hard this year and it shows. It is not a Phantom show from yesteryear and a great deal needs to be done for Phantom to be a major player, no question, but they have improved what they have and deserve credit for that. Crossmen: this was my first time seeing them this year and I enjoyed them more than I expected. It’s a fast paced show and the guard was amazing. I also thought the drum major had quite a bit of personality. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Crossmen and Phantom give each other a run for their money in Indy. Mandarins: a solid performance. I thought the story telling details came across better this evening which I missed in Lawrence, perhaps because it is a busy show. Cadets: they have been busy over the past few days. I’ll have to admit when I first saw the hats, I thought “Mad Hatter” but in the show they worked well. I do wish the “We Can Do Better” was just a drum solo. It worked for me earlier in the season, but less so now. However, what I did feel was an energy. Cadets will get the most from that show they can. I don’t think it’s impossible for them to hold on to 7th ahead of Blue Knights and Blue Stars. Cavies, Crown, and BAC all had great runs. I did think the scores should have been closer, within a point. Cavies were as I expected: a solid show that is strong overall. I found Crown’s show uneven on Thursday but thought after last night’s show they could catch SCV which I think most of us thought would be Cavies or BAC. BAC tells their story better than anyone, and where the top three were so good, placement could have gone in any way, but being nearly a full point behind Cavies and over a point with Crown is hurting them.

  2. Took my mom to the DCI premiere in theaters to expose her to her first "show". Wanted to get her somewhat into the activity but didn't expect her to be as blown away as she was (very happy she was I might add). The tour dates played in between the performances and she saw there was a show in Akron (live about 30 minutes away) and she turned to me and said "We're going". And now it's almost here and I couldn't be more excited to be taking her to her first live show as well as a few other family members. Can't wait for tomorrow to get here!!

  6. Remember that time when everyone was coming onto this thread to talk about how it was too bad that Crown was looking like a sixth place corps... or the time they said what do you want 5th place and Ott or 3rd place... yea? Me too. And guess what. We are not going to have that talk here any more. That is one big fat hairy number tonight. They have forced their way into the conversation not just for a medal... but for ANY medal. Yes... they are a long shot to win but I would not put it past this group (as I have said all year) to rise to the occasion. Bravo Crown... now do it again tomorrow and you have set the table for Championships! Holy Moly! oh and... GO CROWN!!!

  9. Through the generousity of many drum corps people I was able to be at the Allentown show both nights and profoundly thank those who provided my transportation, food, "tickets" and dialogues. You know who you are and I am grateful. Just being out and about after the past year was a salve of spirit. I particularly enjoyed catching up with a number of friends. To those I didn't see whom I usually do, my apologies; the legs weren't working the way they used to; stairs are difficult. Amazingly it was my first show all season. I didn't disagree with the judge's placements. Good luck to all at championships.

  11. The difference between 3 through 6 is almost negligible, save Boston’s guard. It appears gold and silver will be between BC and BD, and we can all celebrate the fact that whomever wins the gold will have again set a high bar for next year.

  12. I don’t know this for fact, but I believe the idea all along has been if we can clean the visual, the demand for this show (movement wise) is beyond what the other corps are doing. But in order for it to work, the visual has to be locked in solid. They’re finally getting the visual locked in.

  13. I was at the Allentown show both nights and Crowns energy and sound got a huge crowd response. More importantly, I'm proud of their results! I hope they keep pushing hard as they have a lot of potential and room to grow imo. I also hope their GE scores start turning a corner and they earn a 3rd place finish at finals.

  16. Allentown Analysis Note that in 2018, the DCI Eastern Classic Day 1 was rain shortened and corps in the Top 15 did not participate. Asteriks in the graphic at the bottom indicate corps that did not have scores in Allentown in 2018. Most recent pre-Allentown score utilized for this analysis. Note that in 2017, the DCI Southeastern Championship did not include all World Class corps. Asterisks in the graphic at the bottom indicate corps that did not have scores on this Saturday night in 2017. The Medalists Remarkably, the Bluecoats keep finding ways to win the big shows as they have now swept the 2019 regionals while losing several times to the Blue Devils between these big shows. For the first time this season, Carolina Crown is in this group with a scant 0.050 point lead over Santa Clara Vanguard. While many will argue that Carolina Crown did not beat Santa Clara Vanguard head-to-head, the Allentown shows are considered one show by Drum Corps International and so I think there is now a fight for the bronze medal spot. In the past week, Santa Clara Vanguard fell from being 0.513 points out of first to 1.587. This changes the argument I made last week that there was a three-way race for the championship. It now appears to be down to just two. This is the closest 1-2 margin after Allentown in the past three years (0.225 in 2019 compared to 1.025 in 2018 and 0.513 in 2017). The bronze medal fight is also extremely tight (0.050 in 2019 compared to 0.212 in 2018 and 1.063 in 2017). The Top 6 All three spots in the 4-6 range are different this week after holding steady at mid-season, San Antonio, and Atlanta. Santa Clara Vanguard dropped to the #4 spot while The Cavaliers passed Boston Crusaders for #5. This year's sixth place corps (Boston Crusaders) is closer to first place (3.200 points) than either of the past two seasons (3.475 in 2018 and 4.325 in 2017). Based on spreads, it seems that Carolina Crown and Santa Clara Vanguard will battle it out for the 3-4 spots while The Cavaliers and Boston Crusaders fight over 5th. The Top 12 There were no changes in the bottom half of the Top 12 from Atlanta to Allentown (or San Antonio to Atlanta for that matter). The spreads are very tight with margins ranging from 0.075 points to 0.750 points, perhaps leaving some room for what has been a very consistent order of placement to jump around in the final week. Given previous ups and downs throughout the season in this grouping, this is certainly a possibility. Spirit of Atlanta did not gain much ground towards a finalist spot finishing 1.300 points out of 12th after being 1.325 points back a week ago. This is the furthest back from the Top 12 for the 13th place corps in the past three years (1.300 in 2008 compared to 0.562 in 2018 and 0.075 in 2017). Largest Changes from 2018 +8 - Jersey Surf (30th to 22nd) +7 - Southwind (34th to 27th) and Spartans (32nd to 25th) -7 - Vanguard Cadets (18th to 25th) +6 - Legends (32nd to 26th) +5 - Heat Wave (42nd to 37th) and Pacific Crest (20th to 15th) -5 - Music City (21st to 26th) and Seattle Cascades (27th to 32nd) The Battles Here are the tightest spreads in the 2019 Top 15 as of Allentown: 0.050 points - #3 Carolina Crown over #4 Santa Clara Vanguard -- Vanguard has not lost head-to-head to Crown this season. 0.075 points - #7 Blue Knights over #8 Blue Stars -- This has been in the top battles all season long. 0.150 points - #8 Blue Stars over #9 The Cadets -- The Cadets have been fighting back with this group. 0.225 points - #1 Bluecoats over #2 Blue Devils -- This is clearly where the attention will be in Indy. 0.288 points - #14 Colts over #15 Pacific Crest -- Pacific Crest wasn't even in the Top 15 before Allentown and is now threatening to go higher. Here are the tightest spreads in the 2019 Top 15 as of Atlanta: 0.000 points - #14 The Academy & #14 Colts -- Tied after trading the #14 spot mid-season vs. San Antonio 0.062 points - #5 Boston Crusaders over #6 The Cavaliers -- This wasn't even one of the top 5 closest races in San Antonio. 0.125 points - #1 Bluecoats over #2 Blue Devils -- Most attention is here especially after the Murfreesboro flip. 0.262 points - #7 Blue Knights over #8 Blue Stars -- Blue Stars have been consistent in their fight for this spot. 0.388 points - #2 Blue Devils over #3 Santa Clara Vanguard -- Still hanging out for an all-out race to Indy. Here are the tightest spreads in the 2019 Top 15 as of San Antonio: 0.200 points - #1 Bluecoats over #2 Blue Devils -- How exciting to have the closest spread at the top! 0.300 points - #10 Mandarins over #11 Crossmen -- The corps have traded wins so this makes sense. 0.325 points - #7 Blue Knights over #8 Blue Stars -- Bad news for The Cadets to see these two corps battling it out for 7th place. 0.350 points - #4 Carolina Crown over #5 Boston Crusaders -- These corps have also had some back and forth throughout the season. 0.538 points - #2 Blue Devils over #3 Santa Clara Vanguard -- Would generate a lot of excitement to see this stay tight. No 2018 Top 15 Allentown analysis in this area due to rainouts wreaking havoc on statistics. Here were the tightest spreads in the 2018 Top 15 and what happened as of Atlanta: 0.050 points - #5 The Cavaliers over #6 Boston Crusaders -- Boston moved into #5 by finals. 0.100 points - #10 Phantom Regiment over #11 Mandarins -- Mandarins moved into #10 by finals. 0.200 points - #1 Santa Clara Vanguard over #2 Blue Devils -- Santa Clara Vanguard held on for the win. 0.325 points - #8 Blue Stars over #9 Blue Knights -- Blue Stars held on to #8. 0.475 points - #2 Blue Devils over #3 Bluecoats -- Blue Devils held on to #2. Here were the tightest spreads in the 2018 Top 15 and what happened as of San Antonio: 0.163 points - #5 The Cavaliers over #6 Boston Crusaders -- Boston moved into #5 by finals. 0.187 points - #8 Blue Knights over #9 Blue Stars -- Blue Stars moved into #8 by finals. 0.288 points - #9 Blue Stars over #10 Phantom Regiment -- Blue Stars moved up and Phantom Regiment moved down. 0.300 points - #2 Blue Devils over #3 Bluecoats -- Held. 0.363 points - #14 Spirit of Atlanta over #15 Colts -- Both corps moved up over #13 The Academy. And for 2017 San Antonio: 0.200 points - #10 Crossmen over #11 Blue Stars -- Blue Stars moved into #10 by finals. 0.300 points - #12 Mandarins over #13 Madison Scouts -- Madison Scouts moved into #12 by finals. 0.450 points - #2 Santa Clara Vanguard over #3 Carolina Crown -- Held. 0.475 points - #1 Blue Devils over #2 Santa Clara Vanguard -- Held. 0.600 points - #6 Boston Crusaders over #7 The Cadets -- Held. None of this in 2017 Atlanta due to some corps not participating. And for 2017 Allentown: 0.075 points - #13 Mandarins over #14 The Academy -- Held. 0.350 points - #6 Boston Crusaders over #7 The Cadets -- Held. 0.350 points - #10 Blue Stars over #11 Crossmen -- Held. 0.500 points - #9 Phantom Regiment over #10 Blue Stars -- Held. 0.513 points - #1 Blue Devils over #2 Santa Clara Vanguard -- Held.

  18. The annual DCI Tour of Champions - Presented by the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival takes place on Monday, August 5. The show moves from long-time home at Paul Brown Stadium in Massillon to the University of Akron's InfoCision Stadium. While Massillon was a great home for many year, the show has grown to the point that a larger stadium was required. Ticket sales have been high, but some good seats are still available. The ticket window will open at 3:00. Gates will open about 5:30. Show begins at 7:00. Please note - DCI handles the ticket sales for this show. They are expecting LONG LINES at the ticket window because of the large number of on-line sales in the past few days (too late to mail tickets). I would advise those still needing to buy tickets to get to the ticket office as soon as it opens, go to dinner, come back for the show. During intermission there will be some activities with the PFHOFEF folks (introduction of the queen and her court, etc). During the encore there will be a recognition of the Bluecoats Hall of Fame, Bloo Ribbon, and Unsung Hero recipients. Bloo arranger/composer Doug Thrower will also be recognized. Alumni corps members will join the current corps for the playing of "Autumn Leaves"...and yes, "The Boxer" will be heard. Here is the lineup (and a GREAT one it is): 7:00 PM Welcome & National Anthem 7:10 PM Rhythm IN BLUE - Canton, OH (SoundSport Exhibition) 7:20 PM Crossmen - San Antonio, TX 7:37 PM Phantom Regiment - Rockford, IL 7:54 PM Mandarins - Sacramento, CA 8:11 PM Blue Knights - Denver, CO 8:28 PM Intermission 8:45 PM Carolina Crown - Fort Mill, SC 9:02 PM Boston Crusaders - Boston, MA 9:19 PM The Cavaliers - Rosemont, IL 9:36 PM Santa Clara Vanguard - Santa Clara, CA 9:53 PM Bluecoats - Canton, OH 10:10 PM Encore...Ladies and gentlemen ONCE AGAIN...The Bluecoats 10:35 PM Scores Announced

  19. As a seasoned 40 year TV television production specialist. I want to pay Tribute to Tom Blair and his Production Team for his/their unparalleled ability to capture the true essence of our beloved Drum Corps activity. This becomes so evident especially during the annual "BIG, LOUD & LIVE" Cinecast, World Championship broadcasts and the culminating release of his impeccable mastered Blu-Ray DVD's of finals. OBSERVATION: The Creative and Quality value lines between the Corps making it into the Top 12 and the remaining 16-25 ranked Corps has dramatically becoming blurred this season. Since my Corps marching days from 1965-72 and a follower of the evolution of DCI Corps since 1971 . I dare say we are seeing in 2019, the very pinnacle of what I would say has now evolved, good and/or bad, more like a "Sport of" or "Pageantry of The Arts" heavily influenced by WGI and the Marching Band Activity. ( Difficult to admit, coming from a tried and true member of the Old "Guard" of Drum and Bugle Corps with baton twirlers circa 1960's. The current wave of change and influence of women (Bravo: DCI's Women "IN STEP") as Caption heads and as Program/Creative Design Directors i.e. The Academy's Lindsey Vento, is very encouraging. This will open more windows of opportunity and new doors opening up to a path of new Vision in this activity's evolution. and, It Is Good.

  20. Imagine if this year were the first time in over a decade (last time was 2006) where the Blue Devils did NOT get silver or gold... and it was because of Crown sneaking up on them for some overdue revenge *cough* 2015 *cough*

  26. BK: There’s a reason why everyone says they are so different from everyone else. Very strong run on all fronts tonight, and oddly I think the crowd reacted to them stronger than most others. I think they maintain their lead over the Blue Stars, for now at least. INT time!

  27. Colts: Awesome job! Crowd was very responsive to hell “freezing over.” In most other years, they would be in the Finals conversation. My row is surprisingly empty and I’m on the 25. If nobody else comes, I’m moving down.

  30. There has been a change in LOS policies this year you may not yet know about. For section 140, seats 1-12 in each row of 18-22, DCI has given me permission to police for smelly, crunchy snacks. During breaks, possession and use warrants a disapproving frown. Possession and use during shows results in me questioning your entire family's intelligence in snide comments to seat neighbors. Only once the corps starts to exist the field, of course. Also, Dan A asked me to pinch anyone who holds their iPhone up in front of my face while illegally taping shows.

  32. The audience reactions during the YT Allentown video that's split into two parts — chef's kiss. Perfect. I definitely think sometimes we overstate how much the Allentown crowd historically dislikes BD — I swear I've been there when people said the reaction was bad but from my seat it was quite good — but I've never heard Oohing and Aahing like what I'm hearing on this video. I love it. And also this video shows how far they still have to go, in a good way! They're scoring very well and aren't nearly done. Dirty feet, lots of drops, minor tears. This show performed at the top of its game is a champion. Ringo and Paul and the boys better watch their backs!!!

While they spent half the ensemble rehearsal working on the newest revision to the ending, they worked very productively to the point where the staff agreed to have it performed over the next two shows, starting tonight in Buffalo! Of course, the rest of the show is really cooking, too. I don’t want to spoil anything for those who will be seeing it tonight in Buffalo or tomorrow night in Akron, but this *new* new ending does contain something I suggested earlier. 🙂
